First of all, I thank Chazeman Jackson, ‘03, for assuming the responsibilities of Alumni President in my absence. I also thank all of you who attended the activities sponsored by TCNAA during the Commencement weekend. I think that the recruitment training that representatives from the chapters received during Commencement helped with the explosive recruitment results. We have commitments from more than 350 new students for the fall semester. Annie Archie, ’60, Carlos D. Smith, ’05, and their committee managed the flow of the Commencement activities exceptionally well and we appreciate the energy contributed to this success. For those that returned to the campus, I am sure you acquired a renewed commitment to take on the task of maintaining the legacy of our dear Eagle Queen. Hopefully, this commitment will exhibit itself through

physical, spiritual and/or financial participation in all endeavors. Currently, we have two active projects available:

• Galloway Project –allows alumni, family and friends to participate in the renovation of a room(s) in Galloway Hall which will bare the signage of

the entity contributing to it’s renovation.

• Century Club –concerned club members who take direct action on designated projects: the first project is purchasing microscopes Kincheloe

The Hall of Fame committee has selected another group of distinguished alumni to be honored during our Hall of Fame banquet. Congratula-

tions to the 2008 TCNAA Hall of Fame inductees! Let’s be supportive of the inductees by providing congratulatory ads and attending the banquet.

TCNAA has launched its own travel website at www.TougalooTravel.com. This new service is like having our own Expedia® just for TCNAA supporters and friends! You get access to the same airlines, hotels and rental car companies, cruises and vacation packages you find on all the other major travel websites, and best of all TCNAA receives a commission on all reservations initiated on the site. Any way you look at it, this is a win-win situation. You get great travel rates and you help funnel dollars into TCNAA for scholarships for deserving students. The un-audited final numbers for the 2007 – 2008 “1869 Fund” (Annual Fund) reflects that we met our goal of three million dollars! However, we still have a one million dollar challenge on the table. Fellow alum, let us do our part in answering this challenge and ensuring that this generation of young

people be afforded the resources to attend Tougaloo College, our dear Eagle Queen.

Dexter Robinson and I salute alumni from across the globe for being so supportive of us in the Office of Alumni Affairs during our

first year! Thank you for your spirits that have encouraged us, your intellect that has taught us, your eyes that helped us see the way,

your shoulders to lean on, your voices to edge us on and your hearts for our dear Tougaloo; exhibited by sharing your financial

resources and acts of kindness through service. We are grateful and inspired to continue to serve you.

Aside from the regular office routine, we continue to work with the rest of the Office of Institutional Advancement (OIA) team, our

campus family and the greater community to enhance the lives of its residents as we promote Tougaloo College. In addition, we are

proud to have the privilege of working with the Pre-Alumni Council to encourage them in their journey toward becoming alumni. We

are honored to support their endeavors and rejoice with them in their accomplishments over the past year; we are enthusiastic about

their future activities. You will be pleased to know that their platform for the year is service and that they have identified several

community organizations to share their time and talents with. I am pleased to introduce the Pre-Alumni officers (the E-Board) for this

school year and to express their interest in networking with alumni at every opportunity afforded them.

David E. Miller, ’72, Elected President of the National Alumni Council

The UNCF–the United Negro College Fund–the nation’s oldest and most successful minority higher education assistance

organization, recently announced that David E. Miller Esq. was elected as president of the National Alumni Council (NAC) . The NAC

is a UNCF-sponsored organization of concerned graduates and current students of the 39 historically black colleges and universities

(HBCUs) that make up the UNCF, as well as individuals who want to advance the cause of minority higher education. Miller, a native

of Vicksburg, Mississippi, currently serves as an assistant real estate manager for the City of Houston in the Department of Public

Works and Engineering, Planning and Development Services.

“It is with great pride that I assume this leadership position to assist the UNCF with its fundraising efforts,” said Miller. “The

education I received at two HBCUs made my career possible.”

Miller’s first introduction to NAC was in 1994 when he was Director of Alumni Affairs at his alma mater, UNCF member Tougaloo

College in Mississippi. He attended the NAC’s annual conference in Greensboro, North Carolina that year and was inspired by the

level of support and attendance by alumni and students. Miller left Tougaloo College in 1996 and returned to Houston where he

founded the Houston Area Inter-Alumni Council (IAC). The IAC serves as an umbrella organization for the local alumni chapters of

UNCF member institutions. IACs work in collaboration with UNCF's area offices to raise funds for UNCF and its member colleges

and universities and their students.

In addition to receiving his undergraduate degree from Tougaloo College, Miller graduated from the Thurgood Marshal Law

School of Texas Southern University in Houston in 1974 and is a Tougaloo College Hall of Fame inductee. Miller has served as

president of the Houston Alumni Chapter of the Tougaloo College National Alumni Association (TCNAA) and president of the Houston

Board of Directors of the Houston Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union.
