INTRODUCTION

The firm has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1979, when its founder Mr.

Tanveer Ahmed started his independent practice. As a sole practitioner, Mr. Tanveer initially

specialized in civil litigation but his insistence on innovation and research led the firm to explore

new avenues and take on different kinds of work. This willingness to explore new avenues

enabled our firm to provide a wide range of legal services to our clients. Our clients, in turn,

benefitted from having a one stop solution for all their legal problems.

LITIGATION AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION

The lawyers of our firm have the capacity and experience to successfully represent its clients

before all judicial forums of Pakistan ranging from the first stage of appeal to all the way to the

Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Depending upon the requirements of each case; our lawyers have ensured that our clients obtain a

favourable outcome in every situation. Till date, we have represented our clients in matters

relating to land disputes; tax; competition; labour and employment; services; accountability and

criminal law.

We have, at various instances, successfully filed civil suits and petitions to obtain interim and

permanent injunctions against the coercive orders passed by different regulatory authorities of

Pakistan and/or to provide relief to our clients against a prejudicial acts committed by a third

party. Additionally, we have also been successful in obtaining decrees in favour of our clients in

recovery cases concerning tens of millions of rupees.

In the past, our lawyers have represented the doctors of the National Institute of Cardiovascular

Diseases in the backdrop of the 18th

Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan against the

devolution of various hospitals to the Provincial Government.

Our lawyers have successfully argued before the High Court of Sindh against the cancellation

order of the license of a leading construction and land development company. Our lawyers have

also obtained injunctions against the City District Government Karachi for their illegal

authorization of unlawful constructions. Our lawyers have also acted for Karachi Port Trust on

numerous occasions on issues involving seniority; regularization and promotions.

Our firm has also acted for a consortium of Chartered Accountancy firms to obtain a stay against

the imposition of Sales Tax on Services by the Provincial Government of Sindh. Our firm has

been asked to render assistance in representing Dow University of Health Sciences in connection

with disputes filed in the High Court of Sindh.

At present, we are representing a leading multinational pharmaceutical company before the

Supreme Court of Pakistan.

CORPORATE AND COMMERCIAL LAW

The firm has witnessed tremendous growth in this area of practice over the last few years.

On behalf of our clients, we have reviewed commercial contracts and rendered advice to ensure

that the interests of our clients are well protected.

Additionally, we have extensive experience in conducting negotiations on behalf of our clients to

negotiate suitable settlements of disputes arising from those commercial contracts.

In the past, our firm has been hired to advise a group of investors regarding the appropriate

business structure of utilizing a Rs. 1 billion investment. We have also been commissioned to

render advice regarding the appropriate structure of doing business relating to the various joint

ventures entered into by our clients with third parties.

We are frequently required to render opinions on regulatory issues, review of transactions, and

the related offtake and supply agreements. Similarly, we are also routinely requested to advice on

various formalities associated with the successful culmination of a commercial transaction.

We are often instructed to assist our clients in ensuring compliance with various corporate and

commercial laws of Pakistan during the procurement of a license or a contract to conduct a

particular trade.

Further, we have substantial experience in advising clients on issues relating to companies. In

particular, we have advised companies on matters relating but not limited to the rights of

shareholders against the management of a company; substantial property transactions; payment

of dividends and other related matters.

We have advised executive officers of leading companies in relation to the allegations made on

them by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.

Our firm has rendered assistance to clients in connection with the Cyber Crime laws of Pakistan

whereby representations were made to the Federal Investigation Authority against the malicious

and fraudulent campaign initiated by a third party via social media.

We have acted and advised a major pharmaceutical company in connection to their disputes with

the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan.

At present, we are representing a major pharmaceutical company before the Competition

Commission of Pakistan.

In addition to the above, our firm has been approached by a leading logistics company to render

advice regarding the commercial viability of a sub-lease agreement.

PROPERTY CONVEYANCE AND REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT

Our firm has been involved in this area of practice since its inception in 1979. Till date, our firm

has been involved in over 500 property related transactions.

Resultantly, we offer our clients a wide scope of services within this area of practice ranging

from the initial investigation of title to the drafting and registering of the sale agreements to

effect the mutation of the said title. In relation to rented premises; we have advised clients

regarding the drafting of the tenancy agreements and on matters relating to eviction; non-

payment of rent and enhancement of rent among other things.

We have conducted due diligence exercises on behalf of our clients to enable them to make an

informed decision regarding their election to purchase a particular property.

We have substantial experience in litigated property whereby our lawyers have successfully

defended the title of a property to protect its commercial value and/or argue against the prolonged

interim injunctions that plagued a property’s ability to sell.

Additionally, we have advised clients in matters relating to the incidence of stamp and CVT

duties applicable to the sale and purchase of a property. In recent months, we have also advised

clients in matters relating to the valuation of the properties.

In the past, we have advised clients regarding the incorporation of companies, establishment of

societies and formation of a trust to enable them to seamlessly transfer the property through a

body corporate and therefore, bypass numerous time consuming formalities.

Recently, our lawyers successfully negotiated the procurement of outstanding rental payments of

Rs. 9 million from M/s. National Bank of Pakistan.

In addition to the above, we have substantial experience in representing clients before the Rent

Controller to contest litigation on behalf of our clients.

LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENT

Our experience within this area of practice includes advising clients regarding the drafting of

employment contracts and rendering of advice regarding the application of various labour

regulations relating to factories; industrial relations and the payment of wages.

Additionally, we have routinely rendered advice in relation to the payment of levies and

contributions under various laws such as the EOBI, WWF, SESSI and Companies’ Profit

Participation. In recent times, we have rendered opinions regarding the constitutionality and the

powers of the Sindh Revenue Board to charge the provincial version of the aforementioned levies

and contributions.

Further, we have also rendered opinions and advice in relation to countless disputes arising

between our clients and the labour members of their organization.

In addition to the above, our lawyers have negotiated on behalf of our clients, with the labour

unions to reach a settlement that is acceptable to all stakeholders.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

The intellectual property services of our firm includes advising and issuing guidance relating to

the registration, renewal and protection of our clients’ trademarks, copyrights, patents and

designs.

In particular, we have rendered opinions regarding the possible quantum of damages in a

potential IP infringement claim to enable our clients to assess the requirement of obtaining a

Professional Indemnity Insurance.

We are frequently instructed to produce opinions on assessing the best method of protecting our

client’s ideas, designs and secrets.

We have also obtained permanent injunctions from the Sindh High Court in favour of our clients

against the fraudulent use of either their trademarks or trademarks which are deceptively similar

to their prior registered ones. Similarly, we have acted on behalf of our clients to effect

reasonable settlements in disputes connected with the allegations of IP infringement.

Additionally, we have successfully defended our client’s trademarks in opposition applications

filed against them before the Trademark Registry in the Intellectual Property Office of Pakistan.

Our firm is routinely engaged in the registrations of trademarks and copyrights before the

concerned registrars.

TAXATION

Our tax advisory services include filing of the Income Tax, Sales Tax and the Federal Excise

Duty returns. For our individual clients, we even offer wealth filing and the wealth reconciliation

services.

Additionally, we have extensive experience in formulating strategies for clients at every step of

their businesses to ensure that the incidence of tax is legally reduced to a minimum. Further, we

also render assistance to clients in establishing accounting systems which are in compliance with

the tax laws of Pakistan.

We even conduct training workshops for the account departments of newly established

businesses to enable them regarding the requirement of withholding tax from the payments made

in pursuit of their business.

In the past, we have advised a Chinese oil drilling company regarding the payment of Sales Tax

on Services in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab whereby they were advised on the best way of

reducing their sales tax payments by ensuring the diligent claim of input tax.

We have also acted on behalf of a major advertising firm regarding the possible double charge of

Service Sales Tax relating to the provision of services across the provinces of Pakistan.

We are frequently required to draft opinions on various matters involving the incidence of

various taxes including Income Tax, Sales Tax, FED, Customs Duty and the Stamp Duties.

Moreover, we have frequently advised our clients regarding the impact and effect of Double

Taxation Treaties signed between the Federation of Pakistan and other countries.

Recently, we were instructed to render an opinion to a multinational logistics company in Hong

Kong regarding the incidence of taxes on its decision to restructure the shareholding of its

subsidiary in Pakistan.

We also appear on behalf of our clients before the multiple tax authorities in Pakistan regarding

various matters ranging from proceedings of monitoring and audit to the claims of refund.

We have also appeared on behalf of a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer to obtain an

injunction against the illegal imposition of sales tax on the import of its raw materials.

Our firm has substantial experience in advising clients regarding the creation of corporate

structures to legally reduce their tax liability.

We have been hired on retainer basis to file direct and indirect tax returns for a number of our

clients. Additionally, we also render assistance in obtaining advance rulings on proposed

investments and business transactions.

MR. TANVEER AHMED Advocate Supreme Court | Senior Partner

Mr. Tanveer is the founder of our firm. Having an experience of over 35 years, he has

represented our clients in a wide variety of contentious matters before the superior courts of

Pakistan. Within the firm, Mr. Tanveer’s responsibilities include training the associates for court

room advocacy and legal research. Mr. Tanveer has various reported cases to his credit.

MR. MOIZ AHMED Barrister-at-Law (Lincoln’s Inn) | Advocate High Court | Managing Partner

Mr. Moiz practices law mainly in the High Court of Sindh but has also argued cases before the

High Court in Quetta. Within a short span of time; Mr. Moiz has managed to obtain numerous

reported judgments to his name. Mr. Moiz is regularly invited to deliver keynote lectures and

talks on various forums. Mr. Moiz routinely advises clients on various matters of law including

commercial contracts; managerial disputes; industrial disputes; lease and sub lease agreements;

and intellectual property.

Mr. Moiz is a professor of law and has delivered lectures to law and accountancy students on the

subjects of Mercantile Law; Contract Law; Jurisprudence; and Legal Philosophy. At present; he

delivers lectures on Drafting and Conveyance; and Intellectual Property to law students at SM

Law College.

Mr. Moiz is an accomplished student of law having been the recipient of Academic Achievement

Award from the University of London in 2008. In the same year, he also obtained a First Division

in M.A. International Relations from the University of Karachi.

MR. HAFEEZ QADRI Advocate High Court

Mr. Hafeez (B.Sc., LLB) is a Senior Associate at the firm. He joined the firm in 1995 and since

law.

Mr. Hafeez represents the firm in various tribunals across Pakistan. Additionally, Mr. Hafeez also

MR. HASAN SHIKOH Advocate High Court

MR. HASSNAIN ALI CHOOHAN Advocate High Court

Mr. Hassnain (M.A., LLB, B. Tech) joined the firm in 2013 as an Associate. Since then, Mr.

Hassnain has been involved with assisting the partners before the Superior and the District Courts

of Pakistan. Mr. Hassnain is also involved with various criminal matters on behalf of the firm. In

a short period of time, Mr. Hassnain has proven himself to be a very potent litigator by

developing his expertise in the Civil and Criminal Procedure of Pakistan. Due to his dedication

MR. MUHAMMAD SALEEM Advocate | Paralegal

Mr. Saleem has been a part of this firm since the year 2000 and has obtained his law degree

during the course of his employment with this firm. He routinely assists our lawyers in the

preparation of various court documents.

His qualification in law enables him to give the lawyers of our firm a great advantage in the

drafting and preparation of statements; affidavits; pleadings and other ancillary documents since

this allows us to ensure that the final draft of the documents before submission are in accordance

Mr. Saleem’s responsibilities within the firm also includes ensuring that all the IT related

MR. VENAY KUMAR Paralegal

Mr. Venay (B. Comm., MBA) has been a part of our firm since 2015. Mr. Venay comes with ten

years of experience in rendering regulatory services in the fields of tax and corporate compliance.

Prior to joining the firm; Mr. Venay was a senior associate in an audit and assurance firm. Mr.

Venay assists the lawyers of our firm in rendering tax compliance services with regular visits to

the Federal Board of Revenue, the Sindh Revenue Board, the Securities & Exchange

Commission of Pakistan and Pakistan Customs regarding various issues.

MR. MUHAMMAD ANEES Administrative Assistant

Mr. Anees’s scope of responsibilities includes helping the Partners in the effective overall

administration of the firm to ensure that a firm does not lag behind because of administrative
