n Respiratory protection. Wear a faceor dust mask, or poweredrespirator. Dust masks/filters shouldbe changed regularly.

n Do not switch router on with thecutter touching the workpiece.

n The direction of routing mustalways be opposite to the cutter'sdirection of rotation.

n After work, release the routerplunge and allow spindle to stoprotating before putting machinedown.

n Check before cutting that there areno obstructions in the path of therouter. When cutting through the fullthickness of the workpiece, ensurethere are no obstacles beneathworkpiece, and that a sacrificialwork surface is used.

Additional Safety Rules ForRouter Cutters

n Cutting tools are sharp. Careshould be taken when handlingthem.

n Always use cutters with a shankdiameter corresponding to the sizeof the collet installed in your tool.

n Always run router cutters at thespindle speed recommended andmarked accordingly. Ensure cutterhas reached correct speed beforeentering workpiece. Recommendedspeeds can be found on thepackaging, in cutter instructions orin the Trend Routing Catalogue.

n Always use router cutters in arouter. Router cutters must not beused in a drill. Drill and boring bitsmust not be used in a router.Router cutters must only be usedfor the material cutting applicationfor which they are designed. Do notuse on metal or masonary.

n Never use cutters with a diameterexceeding the maximum diameterindicated in the technical data ofthe powertool or attachment used.

n Do not drop cutters or knock themagainst hard objects. Do not usecutters that are damaged.

n Cutters should be kept clean. Resinbuild up should be removed at

regular intervals with ResinCleaner®. The use of a drylubricant (Trendicote® PTFE) willact as a preventative. Do not usePTFE spray on plastic parts.

n Cutter shanks should be insertedinto the collet to the mark line onthe shank. This ensures that atleast 3⁄4 of the shank length is heldin the collet. Do not over-tighten thecollet nut as this will score theshank and create a weakness andfracture point.

n Observe the correct assemblyinstructions in the router instructionmanual for fitting the collet and nut.Observe the router power toolmanual instructions on fittingcutters correctly.

n It is advisable to periodically checkthe collet and collet nut. A worn, distorted or damaged collet cancause vibration and damage theshank, and should be replaced.Worn collet nuts should bereplaced.

n Do not take deep cuts in one pass;take several shallow or light passesto reduce the side load applied tothe cutter. Too deep a cut in onepass can stall the router.

n Very small diameter cutters mustbe handled and used with care.

n Always return cutter to itspackaging after use.

n Should you experience excessivevibration during use stopimmediately. Have the eccentricityof the router, router cutter andclamping system checked.

n All fastening screws and nutsshould be tightened using theappropiate spanner or key inaccordance with the manufacturersinstructions.

Using Routers In A FixedPosition

n After work, release the routerplunge to protect the cutter.

n Always use a push-stick or push-block for last 300mm of the cut.

n Whenever possible use a workholding device or jig to securecomponent being machined.

n Ensure attachment is securely fittedto the workbench, with tablesurface at approximately hip height.

n Ensure a No-Volt Release Switch isfixed to or adjacent to theattachment and that it is usedcorrectly.

n Check the direction of theworkpiece is always opposite to thecutter's direction of rotation.

n Do not use awkward oruncomfortable hand positions.

n Do not reach underneath table orput your hands or fingers at anytime in the cutting path while tool isconnected to a power supply.

Useful Advice When Routing

n Judge your feed rate by the soundof the motor. Feed the router at aconstant feed rate. Too slow a feedrate will result in burning.

n Take many light passes rather thanone deep cut to reduce the sideload applied to both router androuter cutter.

n Trial cuts should be made on wastematerial before starting any project.

n When using some attachmentsincluding a router table or dovetailjig, the use of a fine height adjusteris highly recommended.

n When using a template guide bush, ensure there is sufficient clearancebetween cutter tip and inside edgeof bush. Ensure cutter and guidebush are concentric.

Router Cutter Maintenance

n Composite cutting tools (brazed tip)must be maintained by a competentperson i.e. a person of training andexperience, who has knowledge ofthe design requirements andunderstands the levels of safety tobe achieved.

n The design of composite tools mustnot be changed in the process ofmaintenance.

n Replacement parts must meetTrend specification.

n Tolerances which ensure correctclamping by the collet shall bemaintained.

n When re-grinding the tool, caremust be taken not to causeweakening of the body or theconnection between the cuttingedge and the body.

Setting the Electronic Speed Control DialThe speed is infinitely variable from 8,000 to22,000 rpm using the electronic speed controldial (1) for uniform cutting results in all types ofwood, plastics and in aluminium.

n Turn the electronic speed control dial to therequired level. The dial is numbered from 1 to6 and corresponds to router speeds from8,000 rpm to 22,000 rpm.

n Generally, use the lower settings for largediameter cutters and the higher settings forsmall diameter cutters. The correct setting willalso depend on the density of the material, depth of cut and feed speed of the router, assevere loss of rpm denotes motor overload.

Using the Fine Height AdjusterThe optional fine height adjuster(ref. FHA/002) should be used when fineadjustment is required. This is especiallyrecommended when using our dovetail jig orrouter table.

Fitting the Fine Height Adjuster

n Lock depth of plunge with plunge lockinglever

n Using a Hex key (1) supplied with fine heightadjuster, remove grub screw (2) on theplunge depth stop knob (3)

n Gently remove depth stop knob (3) fromheight adjustment rod (4) by releasing theplunge lever carefully. Once removed, plungerouter down and lock using plunge lockinglever.

n Fit washer (5) onto height adjustment rod (4)and then fit height adjuster assembly (6) ontoheight adjuster rod. Ensure that the hole inboth the assembly and rod are aligned.

n Using a Hex key (1) screw the grub screw (2)into the threaded side of the fine heightadjuster body and into the thread within therod.

n Ensure grub screw (2) is not left proud.

Fixing Points for AccessoriesThe router has three threaded holes M6 in itsbase that allow fitting of accessories and alsofitting to router tables.

A whole range of accessories are shown in theTrend Routing Catalogue.

Stationary useWhen the T9 is used in a stationary position witha no volt release switch (ref. NVRS/230V orNVRS/230V/EUR) fitted, a trigger lock (ref.T9/LOCK) is available which will lock the triggerin the ‘on’ position.

Step OnePlunge down and lock themotor carriage, bydepressing the plungelocking lever.

Step TwoCarry out the routingoperation.

Step ThreeRelease the plunge lockinglever and the motor carriagereturns to the normalposition.

Sequence of plunging

Feed Direction

When routing along an edge, the direction of therouter travel should be against that of therotation of the cutter. This will create the correctcutting action and prevent the cutter ‘snatching’.It will also pull the router towards the workpieceand hence the side-fence or guide bearing willbe less likely to wander from the edge of theworkpiece.

Feed SpeedThe speed at which the cutter is fed into thewood must not be too fast that the motor slowsdown, or too slow that the cutter leaves burnmarks on the face of the wood. Practice judgingthe speed by listening to the sound of the motorwhen routing.

OPERATION

Cutting DirectionThe direction of routing must alwaysbe opposite to the cutter’s direction ofrotation. Otherwise there is a risk ofkick-back.

Moulding Natural TimbersWhen edge moulding natural timbers, alwaysmould the end grain first, followed by the longgrain. This ensures that if there is ‘breakout’, thiswill be removed when the long grain is routed.

Side-fence RoutingThe side-fence is used to guide the router whenmoulding, edge profiling or rebating the edge ofthe workpiece or when routing grooves and slotsin the centre of the workpiece, parallel to theedge.

The edge of the workpiece must be straight andtrue. The cheeks are adjustable and shouldbe set ideally with a 3–4mm gap eachside of the cutter.

When starting the cut, keepthe pressure on the frontcheek (C) until the backcheek contacts theworkpiece edge.

At the end of the cut, keeppressure on the back cheek(D) until the cut is finished. This will prevent the routercutter swinging in at the endof the workpiece and‘nipping’ the corner.

Fitting the Micro Fence Adjuster

n Insert one end of the micro fence adjuster (1)into one of the recesses (2) in the routerbase (3)

n Fit the fence rods (4) into the side-fence (5).Tighten thumb knob (6) on side-fence (5).

n Loosen thumb knobs (7) on router base (3)and slide the side-fence (5) with its rods (4)into the router base (3), one rod must alsopass through the micro fence adjusterassembly (1).

n As long as the thumb knobs (7) on the routerbase are loose the side fence (5) can be slidin and out of the base of the router (3). Thisallows approximate setting of the distancebetween the cutter and the side fence cheeks.

n For fine adjustment of the distance, tightenthe micro fence adjustment knob (8) and turnthe micro fence adjustment barrel (9). Onerevolution of the micro fence adjustmentbarrel (9) equals 1.0mm side feed.

n When set, lock the side-fence in positionusing the thumb knobs (7) on the router base(3).

Using the Side Fence

n Lower the cutter onto the workpiece and setthe cutter height by raising the depth stop (10)

the required distance.

n Switch on the router and when the cutterreaches full speed, release the plunge lockinglever (11), by lifting it up. Gently lower thecutter into the workpiece and lock the plungelocking lever (11) by depressing it.

Fitting the Template Guide Bush andInner PlateThe T9 has a unique built-in line up system for the template guide bush. This system ensures that the guide bush is exactly concentric to the router cutter to ensure accurate work.

n Turn the router upside down.

n Fit inner plate (2) with recess facing into therecess in the router base plate (1) (raised sideaway from router base). Loosely fit two panhead machine screws (3) with split springwashers (4) fitted through the inner plate andscrew into the base plate. DO NOT TIGHTEN.

n Fit the 30mm template guide bush (6) to theraised side of the inner plate (2). Fit guidebush with the two M5 countersink machinescrews (7). Tighten these screws.

n The line up pin (5) is stepped for 12mm and1/2” collet (8) sizes. (For the 1/2” collet simplypush the line up pin further down into the 1/2”collet).

n Fit line up pin (5) into the 1/2” collet (8) (or12mm depending on the size fitted) in therouter, lightly tighten collet nut (9) to hold theline up pin (5).

n Release plunge lever (10) and gently depressbase until line up pin (5) projects through the30mm guide bush (6).

n Once in line, tighten the pan head machinescrews (3) with a flat screwdriver.

Routing with a TemplateThe guide bush is used in conjunction with atemplate when the routing operation is repetitiveor the workpiece is complex in shape. Thetemplate is fixed to the upper surface ofthe workpiece. A cutter is chosen with adiameter which will pass through thecentre of the bush leaving enoughclearance. The cutter can be straightor shaped. The router can then beguided around the template so that theshape of the template will be replicated.

Making the TemplateThe template is cut from 6mm or 1/4” MDF,plywood or plastic to the shape required. Theguide bush offset needs to be allowed for whencalculating the shape of the template. Thetemplate must be smaller by an amount equal tothe difference between the ‘outer edge of theguide ring’ and the ‘outer edge of the cutter’.See below for the offset calculation. The edge ofthe template must be free of imperfections asthese will be replicated in the final workpiece.

Beam Trammel Routing using AccessoryRef. BEAM/009

Cutting Arcs with the Router

n Place the machine on the workpiece.

n Set the cutting depth using the depth stopdial (2).

n Fasten the fence rod (1) in the routing base(3) with the thumb knob (4).

n Fit on the beam trammel (5) as shown.

n Measure the radius and fix the point of thebeam trammel in position.

n Switch on the machine.

n After releasing the plunge locking lever (6),lower the machine slowly as far as the depthstop and lock it there.

n Cut grooves, rebates etc. at a steady rate offeed, in an anti-clockwise direction. Ensurethe beam trammel point does not move.

n When finished, release plunge locking lever(6) to raise the machine.

n Switch off the machine.

Fitting the Beam Trammel Attachment

Bearing Guided Cutters

Bearing Guided CuttersEdge profiling and shaping cutters are availablewith a bearing fitted to the end. This enablesshaped or straight workpieces to be routedwithout the need for a guiding device such as aside-fence or batten.

The edge must be free from imperfections asthese will be reflected in the finish of the mould.Often alternative diameters of bearings areoffered which will change the shape of theresulting mould.

With certain shapes such as the chamfer cutterbelow, increasing the depth of cut will produce alarger chamfered edge.

n Fit the bearing guided cutter into the routercollet.

n Place router onto the workpiece.

n Set height of cutter using the depth stop (1).

n Switch on the machine.

n After releasing the plunge locking lever (2),lower the machine slowly as far as the depthstop.

n With bearing of cutter running along boardedge, mould the edge of the workpiece bymoving the router in the direction shown.

n A continuous motion should be used toprevent burning of the workpiece. Whenpossible, take a number of passes atincreased cutter depths. A light final pass willproduce a good finish.

n When complete, retract the carriage byreleasing the plunge locking lever.

n Switch off the router.

2

1

The guide bearingensures the cutterfollows the workpiece.

Where the material thickness leavesinsufficient room for the bearing to makecontact, a second piece of material can betemporarily fixed beneath it for the ballbearing to follow.

Keep downward pressure with theinside hand to prevent the router fromtipping.

Freehand Routing with the RouterThe T9 can also be used for signwriting orcreative freehand work without any form ofguide.

With practice, numbers or name plate designscan be routed freehand. Draw the design ormotif on the workpiece and then rout the design, taking shallow passes.

Batten RoutingWhere a side-fence cannot be used, it is alsopossible to guide the router along a battenclamped across the workpiece (with anoverhang at both ends).

Guidance from a batten is similar to thatobtained from a side-fence. This method isappropriate if the edge of the workpiece is notstraight or is not very smooth or simply theguide rods of the side-fence are too short forthe job.

Use the straight edges of the router base andcalculate the distance required from the edgeof the batten to the cut required. Alwayscheck that the clamps do not obstruct thepath of the router before starting the cut.

Standard technique is used, andside pressure applied to ensure the

router does not wander from thebatten.

A V groove cutteris ideal forengraving designsat shallow depths.
