Christmas ConcertA beautiful evening of carols was held in the auditorium on Monday evening. The lower primary choir opened the event with the enthusiastic rendition of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.

We were led in a wonderful selection of our favourite carols by the Christmas orchestra and choir over the course of the evening. Special guest performances by the Years 2/3 and 6/7 dance groups entertained the audience as did the upper primary choir’s rendition of ‘O Rejoice’. The high school drama department put a smile on everyone’s faces with a comical reflection of Christmas past and present.

Special guest performances by some of our college’s outstanding family talent were enthusiastically received by the audience. The Saward, Damianopoulos and Anitelea families delighted the audience with the renditions of ‘Go Tell it on the Mountain’, ‘The Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ respectively.

We would like to give a special thankyou to the Christmas Carols team: Mr Craig Alloway (orchestra conductor), Miss Marianna Taylor (choir director), Miss Karen Irvine, Mrs Kylie Guthrig and Mr Lindsay Genge and also to Stocklands Burleigh for their generous donation of this year’s Christmas decorations.

How to Teach Problem Solving and Decision Making Skills

When Moses’ life as a leader became consumed with making all the decisions for everyone, he began to train people to make simple decisions for themselves. As parents, we need to do the same and train our children to make good decisions for themselves. Do you make all the deci-sions for your children? How do your children handle prob-lems and decisions that they have to make for themselves? Some children are very insecure, complain and have bad attitudes when faced with a problem. However, problems and decisions make great opportunities to teach children how to face life’s challenges.

Families make decisions and solve problems on a daily basis. Parents must make some decisions and in those cases children need to learn to follow. At other times, parents can involve children and teach them to make wise choices for themselves. Developing good decision-making skills gives children the ability to define a problem, imagine conse-quences of various alternatives and then choose the best solution among the options. Allowing children to solve some problems for themselves communicates honour to them. It says, “I believe in you. You have what it takes. I know you are responsible enough to make good decisions for your-self.”

Sometimes, parents want to solve problems for their chil-dren to help them avoid frustration. Be careful that you don’t rob your children of important learning experiences. Frustration can be a great teacher and can motivate chil-dren to think carefully about their actions. You then can be the counsellor or coach as life teaches a valuable lesson. Much of the day-to-day problem solving and decision-mak-ing in family life can demonstrate cooperation and team-work as parents and children work together. Cooperative decision-making teaches children valuable skills of nego-tiation, compromise, communication, and creating alterna-tives and skills which are very useful in life. Mutual honour is demonstrated in the midst of cooperation.

Strategy for the week: Don’t be too quick to solve a problem or make a decision for your children. Involve chil-dren in the process of problem solving, not just in the final product. Ask questions such as; “What do you think you should do now?” or “Tell me how you are going to make a decision about this.”

Noah’s Ark Celebration Day

The ‘cute factor’ was certainly the order of the day as Noah’s Ark children took to the stage for their end of year concert. Considering their age and experience they had an amazing stage presence and blessed the audience in song and dance. The refreshments afterwards were out-standing and our thanks go to all our centre fami-lies for their contributions. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and holiday.

ChristmasThe school holidays are here. Students are free!! Christmas is fast approaching. I hope you have had time to begin Christmas shopping and to do some planning for the Christmas season and family events. It is important that we remind ourselves of the reason for the season.

Clean Water- A NoveltyTerm 3 holidays for most teaching staff are a time to unwind and recharge ready for the final school term of the year. However, when Manna Ministries made an open invitation for teachers to come to India to mentor local teaching staff, Mandy Cromwell, Gail Napper, Julia Horn and Colin Louwen accepted the invitation.

We visited six schools (all incorporating orphanages) and presented seminars on teaching styles, methods and Christian teaching philosophy. These were well received.

One thing that the King’s staff noticed was the need for consumable resources – as most schools had virtually nothing. But this was not the main need as we subsequently found out. Water related diseases are rampant throughout India. Clean water is basically non-existent for most communities, including school communities. It was then decided that we would try and help by providing water cleaning purifiers to a number of the schools. Hike for Hope money raised by the high school was used to purchase the filters and pay for transport to India.

In discussions with Skyjuice – a humanitarian aid water filter manufacturing company, the college has been able to purchase two water purifying systems to send to India. These will be used at two orphanages/schools near Hyderabad.

These filters can purify 1000 litres per hour, and are self-cleaning. The filter cartridges will last approximately seven years depending on usage. They are simple to install and are virtually maintenance free - a real benefit for third world communities.

The long term vision is that King’s will continue to raise funds each year to help other schools in India to have clean water.

Instrumental Music Tuition 2011Applications are currently being taken for instrumental

music for 2011.If you are interested in learning a musical instrument in

2011 enrolment forms can be found on the college website, via the ‘For Parents’ portal or from any of the college of-fices.

Colours PresentationThe last upper primary assembly was marked by honouring some of our great students. The last of our Primary Colours were presented for Spelling ‘White’, Netball ‘White’ and Rugby ‘Teal’.

Choir Christmas Carols Competition Congratulations to the upper primary choir who took 2nd place at the Pacific Fair Christmas Carol Com-petition! The students represented the school with pride at the competition and were up against three weeks of different schools. Singing two Christmas favourites ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ and ‘Si-lent Night’ the students further amazed the audi-ence with their ability to sing the not so well known repertoire such as ‘O Rejoice’ by Hillsong. Feedback from the judges and the community was positive. We were commended on our beautiful choir sound that our students at King’s produce so beautifully. I would like to thanks parents and friends of the community for coming to support the choir at events such as this competition. It has been an amazing year for the choir and I look forward to next year’s!

Primary’s First Spelling Competition

During this week, the primary school held its first in-school spelling competition. Each class had two representatives in the competition. These students were selected as the top two students in the class from spelling tests throughout the year. The competition was so close in some classes that it required mini spelling bees to determine the representatives of the class. The pupils, representing their class, then came together to spell commonly misspelt words. In a process of elimination, the following students were named champion of their grade for 2010:

Regional AquathlonCongratulations to Dimitee Coventry and Elijah Winnington for their per-formance in the recent Regional Aquathlon held in Bundall on Saturday.

Dimitee finished in a very pleasing 2nd place only metres behind 1st while Elijah finished a very respectable 6th in his age group.

Both students will now go on to compete in the State Aquathlon on the 26th of February. We wish you both every success.

GeneralKing’s launches iPhone App

In what we believe is a first for Australian schools, King's has launched an iPhone app. The app is designed to inform / remind parents about the information they need to know.

It contains a 'calendar' section and a separate 'notices' section for high school, primary, and Noah's Ark. These are updated daily, so the app will always contain the very latest informa-tion.

You can download the app from the iTunes store for free. (From the app store, search for 'kcc' or 'Kings Christian College.') If you have an iPhone, please download the app and give us some feedback - there is a section inside the app where you can do this. Also, rating the app on the iTunes store will help promote the app.

There are more instructions on the College website with links from the home page. This web page explains how to subscribe to the calendar if you don't have an iPhone and also talks about the College blog, Facebook and Twitter pages. Each of these are designed to help keep parents informed of events in the school. The blog especially, is designed to tell the story of College events and contains photos and videos in password protected galleries. The password for these is 'Kings123'.

This is a very exciting innovation, and we trust it is a great help to parents.
