Parenting with PowerScripture of the week: ”For I know

the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

The Unmotivated Child Previously, we wrote about strong-willed children who of-

ten develop into strong leaders later in life. This week we are looking a little closer at the opposite, the unmotivated child; how to recognise and parent these.

Unmotivated children are generally passive, cooperative, flexible, easy going and accommodating. These children may be easier to get along with because they lack the drive of strong-willed children, but parents also struggle with these children, at times. They may not have the fortitude to stand up for themselves, withstand temptation or push hard to complete a task. They are sometimes people-pleasers and may be easily directed in positive or negative ways, depending on whom they are with.

Even unmotivated children wrestle with issues and ques-tions in their hearts, although you may not see it as clearly as in the strong-willed child. Some children process things more internally and aren’t as transparent. These children appear compliant, allowing others to make decisions or take the lead, but their anger may be growing inside.

Sometimes parents overlook the unmotivated child be-cause he or she isn’t causing any trouble, generally gets along with people, and appears easygoing. It may be more difficult to know what is going on in this child’s heart. Un-derstanding this child requires some extra work and effort.

The Bible tell us of people who needed a little extra motivation to get moving in the right direction. God often came alongside people such as Moses, Elijah, and Jacob to motivate them to take initiative when they might not have done so otherwise. Children who tend to give up easily need help to see the path before them more clearly so they can take the steps necessary for success.

Strategy for the week: Take some time this week to discuss with your child where they can see themselves when they have grown up. Help them to create a vision and a pathway for their dreams and aspirations. Remem-ber you are part of your child’s future success.

Well done to the presenters, announcers and story tellers. Our preps are growing up aren’t they!

PrimaryAquathlon State Championships

On Saturday 23rd October, Dimi and Jaz Coventry com-peted in a aquathlon (run, swim, run) event which was held in Wynnum, Brisbane.

Dimi and Jaz both did very well. Dimi got 1st in her age group and was crowned 2010 Aquathlon State Champion! Jaz also had tough competition and got 3rd in her age group.

Congratulations girls!

ParentingI thought you may like this article I

found. Before we have children or work with them, we have all the answers to how children should be parented. It’s a bit “olde-worlde” but I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Beatitudes For ParentsOne man says he had a great speech for parents. It was

called, “How to Raise Your Children.” He went on speaking tours in the Midwestern United States and was paid a high honorarium for the talk. “This guy will wow you,” people said.

Then they had their first child. His majestic speech lost its punch at 2:00 AM with the baby in full cry. But he kept trying. He renamed his new, modified speech “Some Sug-gestions for Parents” and charged bravely on.

They had two more children. The speech changed again. And again. Now it’s called, “Feeble Hints for Fellow Strug-glers” and he begins with the question: “Does anyone here have a few words of wisdom?”

Parents through the ages can identify. “Could someone, please, just give me the final answers to parenting?” we ask. “ALL of them? Could someone please tell me how to respond and what to do and what to say and when to say it and do it and tell me now?”

But, of course, we ask the impossible.

Maybe this will help. I have saved it for years, and I’m convinced it was written by one who has been there.... It is not the final answer to parenting, but cherish it as a dose of wisdom worth re-reading as often as possible.

Beatitudes For Parents by Marion E. Kinneman (1895-1985) (used by permission)• Blessed are those parents who make their peace with

spilled milk and with mud, for of such is the kingdom of childhood.

• Blessed is the parent who engages not in the compari-son of his child with others, for precious unto each is the rhythm of his own growth.

• Blessed are the fathers and mothers who have learned laughter, for it is the music of the child’s world.

• Blessed and wise are those parents who understand the goodness of time, for they make it not a sword that kills growth but a shield to protect.

• Blessed and mature are they who without anger can say “no,” for comforting to the child is the security of firm decisions.

Thursday, October 28, 2010 - Page 3

Secondary• Blessed is the gift of consistency, for it is heart’s-ease

in childhood.

• Blessed are they who accept the awkwardness of growth, for they are aware of the choice between marred furnishings and damaged personalities.

• Blessed are the teachable, for knowledge brings under-standing, and understanding brings love.

• Blessed are the men and women who in the midst of the unpromising mundane, give love, for they bestow the greatest of all gifts to each other, to their children, and -- in an ever-widening circle -- to their fellow men.

Blessed are those who read these words... but more blessed will be they who follow them!

Happy parenting. ASAP. Remember the recall. Response decisions. Lifelong learning. Remember the cat will be-come a dog again. Check out Professional Development for Mothers. Encourage common sense. Healed and whole. Media literacy. Forgive quickly. The gift. Follow the direc-tions. Take the time. Check the habits. Laugh, often and loud. Be still and know that I am God. Cast your burden on the Lord.

A Minister and a WitnessQuote from “Walk in Faith” by Ray McCauleySo I said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Je-sus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you.”

God gives you a purpose and then, while you are busy with the purpose, He anoints you for that task. He does not anoint you whilst you are doing nothing! Unfortunately, many Christians are constantly striving to be anointed, go-ing to meeting upon meeting, but the truth is that when you go into all the world, then the Lord anoints you to preach the Gospel to every creature.

Too often we are like motor cars that have been fully serv-iced, our tanks are full of petrol, but we have not even switched on the engine! When you start to move, God will direct you. He can tell you when to turn left or right (or even turn completely around!). He will tell you when to slow down and when to go faster, but you have to start the engine. He is not going to make you move; you have to do that yourself.

It is important for all of us to be doers of the Word, being obedient in the small things first.

Most people are waiting on God and He is waiting upon them! Get busy about your Father’s business!

Attention: Parents and Guardians of Primary School studentsPlease note that school finishes at 3:05pm for lower pri-

mary and at 3:10pm for the upper primary. We have noted, especially lately, that a large number of students are being collected early from school. Teaching times for all of our stu-dents occur until the end of the school day. Students leaving early interferes with the child receiving instructions and dis-rupts the rest of the class when the teacher is disturbed by a phone call and then must ensure the child is packed up early to leave the class.

Sometimes it is unavoidable to schedule an appointment during school times and we understand that at times this may occur. If these appointments could please be kept to a mini-mum, all students and teachers would benefit.

Regular early finishes for a child, due to an extra cur-ricular activity or specific individual need, must be writ-ten in a letter and addressed to Mrs Lorraine Oswald for approval.

Clinic NewsPlease be aware whooping cough - pertussis is

evident in the community at the present time. If you are concerned about your child, please see your GP or the college nurse.
