IF YOU ARE GOING
TO A HOSPITAL
Before you check into a hospital or have an
outpatient procedure, we encourage you to see
a priest in our parish and receive sacraments
that can help you.
Just speak to a priest after Mass, or call
the Rectory and we will be happy to arrange
to hear your confession, anoint you with the
Sacrament of the Sick, and give you Holy
Communion, to help you through this
spiritually challenging time.

From the Desk of Monsignor Mathers
My Dear Parishioners,
As we continue to celebrate and rejoice in the
New Life of Easter, you may ask yourself, “How can
I make Jesus’ Easter Life part of my daily life?”
While there are many ways to do this, I would like
to recommend a way called “practicing the presence
of God.”
This spiritual practice is drawn from a book
written by Father Joseph de Beaufort. In this book,
which is entitled The Practice of the Presence of God,
Father de Beaufort compiles the wisdom and teachings of Brother Lawrence, a Carmelite
Monk who lived in 17th Century Paris. According to Brother Lawrence, you can find
Jesus and make His Resurrected Life part of your daily life by remembering or being
aware of His Presence even in the smallest and most mundane moments of your day.
The following excerpt from The Practice of the Presence of God gives you an idea of
how Brother Lawrence suggests that you can begin to share your daily life with Jesus:
“(God) requires no great matters of us, a little remembrance of Him from time to time;
a little adoration; sometimes to pray for His grace, sometimes to offer Him your
sufferings, and sometimes to return Him thanks for the favors He has given you, and still
gives you, in the midst of your troubles, and to console yourself with Him the oftenest
you can. Lift up your heart to Him, sometimes even at your meals, and when you are in
company: the least little remembrance will always be acceptable to Him. You need not
cry very loud; He is nearer to us than we are aware of.
It is not necessary for being with God to be always at church; we may make an
oratory of our heart wherein to retire from time to time to converse with Him in
meekness, humility and love. Everyone is capable of such familiar conversation with God,
some more, some less: He knows what we can do. Let us begin, then. Perhaps He
expects but one generous resolution on our part. Have courage. We have but little time
to live. … Let us live and die with God. Sufferings will be sweet and pleasant to us while
we are with Him, and the greatest pleasures will be, without Him, a cruel punishment to
us. May He be blessed for all. Amen.”
Father de Beaufort’s spiritual classic, The Practice of the Presence of God, is still in
print. It is a very useful guide to helping you grow in Jesus’ Life and Love, especially
during the Easter Season.
Sincerely in Christ,
Monsignor Douglas J. Mathers

Prayer Requests
A Prayer for Mothers
All-loving God,
we give You thanks and praise
for Your gift of mothers.
May they be blessed with patience and tenderness
to care for their families and themselves with great joy.
We pray for our own mothers
who have nurtured and cared for us;
May they continue to guide us
in strong and gentle ways.
We remember mothers who are separated from their
children because of war, poverty, or conflict;
May they feel the loving embrace of
our God Who wipes every tear away.
We pray for women who are not mothers
but still love and shape us
with motherly care and compassion.
We remember mothers, grandmothers,
and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us
but who live forever in our memory
and nourish us with their love. AMEN.
THE LIGHT OF CHRIST! THANKS BE TO GOD! THE PASCHAL CANDLE IS A LIGHT
THAT LIVES FROM SACRIFICE.
THUS THE CHURCH PRESENTS MOST BEAUTIFULLY THE PASCHAL MYSTERY
OF CHRIST WHO GIVES HIMSELF.
AND SO BESTOWS THE GREAT LIGHT, THE LIGHT THROUGH WHICH
GOD’S WARMTH AND GOODNESS REACH DOWN TO US.
POPE BENEDICT XVI..
