This year, the feast of St. Patrick

falls on a Friday during the pen-

itential season of Lent. Bishop

Robert E. Guglielmone has

granted a general dispensation

from the obligation of abstain-

ing from meat on 17 March 2017, to all members

of the Catholic Church within the Diocese

of Charleston.

Catholics fast and abstain during Lent to unite

in the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus

Christ, and to prepare to rejoice in his Resurrec-

tion. In lieu of this, the bishop recommends

that anyone who avails himself or herself of the

dispensation substitute another form of pen-

ance, prayer, or almsgiving to the poor in its

place at another time during the remainder of

the Lenten season.
