My Dear Friends in Christ,
In Mark 4:30-32, Jesus tells us this parable: “With what can we compare the
kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard
seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on
earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all
shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make
nests in its shade.”
As we enjoy the longer days of summer and for many of us a time of much
needed rest and relaxation, I want you all to think of the shrub that Jesus
spoke of. A shrub is not necessarily an admired or sought after plant.
Sometimes shrubs are planted as boundary markers, but, for the most part,
they are found in the wild. The seeds of the shrub that Jesus speaks of would
have been quite a nuisance to farmers who cultivated food crops. But, as
Jesus often does, he picks up this unexpected, wild, unwelcomed, tiny seed
as a metaphor for the Kingdom of God. This Summer, as you drive around
the countryside and tend to your gardens, look out for the wild shrubs that
have sprung up regardless of all that is done to discourage their growth.
They continue to be the resilient plants that root themselves on parched soil,
through rocks and rugged terrain, somehow drawing nutrients from deep
below the top soil where no ordinary gardener has the patience to linger.
Dear friends, you and I are the mustard seed! You and I are the tiny shrub
seeds that maybe farmers despise. Yet, here we see Jesus choosing the most
unlikely plant to be one representing the Kingdom of God. This is what it
means to be in the center of God’s passionate love for us that He will gather
the marginalized, the despised and the unimpressive and make them to be
the shade and the shelter where birds of the air can nest and make a home.
So, as you take your walks and stand under the towering trees, look for the
shrubs that Jesus saw and embraced.
Your sister in Christ,
Ajung Sojwal

June has been a very busy month at Trinity for our transition process. First, we celebrated
Father Patrick’s ministry and his next assignment as Associate Rector at Galilee Church in
Virginia, with Nicole, Robert, Jacob and over 200 parishioners on June 11th in the parish
hall. It was standing room only. Just a wonderful sendoff organized by Louise Boehm, Geri
Lavallee, Sue Galici, with just the right selection of speakers (Deacon Pat Joy and Sarah Thayer) and gifts,
including a new red box. The parish also presented them with a framed painting of the church and a check for
$11,400. We are going to miss them, but we know they are going to be in good hands at Galilee.
Our new Interim Rector Rev. Ajung Sojwal and her husband Milind have moved into the rectory. She
has already organized a Vestry retreat to help us organize and prepare for our next Rector. The retreat was well
attended, with several actions identified to improve our leadership process.
On June 20th the following members of the Discernment committee Kathy Sutton, Carolyn Clement,
John Nagy, and Ray Willard had a very successful meeting with Bishop Ian T. Douglas and Rev. Lee Ann
Tolzmann (Canon for Mission Leadership) to review our Ministry Portfolio, and the Trinity website
www.trinitytariffville.org. This information will be used to call our next Rector. The feedback from the Bishop
was excellent. He gave a couple of suggestions to improve the Website, which will be completed in the next
couple of weeks. He also recommended that our package be inputted into the OTM and made available to
potential candidates to apply to be our New Rector for early September release, when most Clergy are back from
summer retreats, sabbaticals and vacations.
Our next scheduled activity for the parish, will be a breakfast meeting on Saturday, July 29, 2017 from
9am-11am in the parish hall. The Discernment team will present the package that was shared with the Bishop.
There will be time for open discussion on the documents, the website and the next steps. Please sign up in the
Narthex to attend. Please continue to pray for the Holy Spirit to lead us to our next Rector
If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch with me. [email protected] or

Senior Warden Trinity
The Altar Guild is a group of Trinity church members dedicated to serving our Lord by preparing and
tending to the places where we hold worship: the Sanctuary, the Howard Chapel and occasionally a
summer outdoor service. We assist the priest so that the worship services proceed smoothly and assure
all the necessary items are in place for worship. Altar Guild members prepare for baptisms, weddings
and funerals as well. We warmly welcome those who feel called to this special service ministry.
There is a period of training and apprenticeship as there are
procedures to learn. During this time, the one in training is assigned to
work with an experienced guild member until completely comfortable
with the tasks. Two guild members are scheduled each weekend to
care for the altar, and the group has a yearly meeting (usually before
Easter) to clean and polish the vessels and sanctuary. Each member
serves every four to six weeks and a schedule is prepared three
months ahead of time. The work is done with a servant’s heart and
love for our Savior God. Please prayerfully consider joining in this
special, behind-the-scenes ministry.

EVANGELISM TEAM UPDATE- August 2017
We Have This Treasure in Earthen Vessels 2 Cor. 4: 7 .
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”
Have you ever been called a “crackpot”? Well, I hope not! But in a way we are all “cracked pots” insofar as we are all imperfect human beings. Imperfect though we are, we hold great treasure within if we have Jesus in our hearts. It is this great treasure within that we seek to share with those around us.
The Evangelism Team meets monthly to discuss ways to reach out to others with the Gospel. This month we discussed the new Worship Advisory Team and the 5 O'clock Re-imagining Team both teams initiated by Rev. Ajung. At this time a Celtic Service at the 5 o’clock is being planned for once a month starting in September. We also talked about St. Bernard’s closing and how we can reach out to them and offer support. Other regular items on our agenda included CAYA, VBS, PPP, Meadow-brook, Parish Directory, Emmaus, Fall into Fall, Pumpkin Patch, Ministry Fair, and Memorial Day at Trinity.
Submitted by: John Nagy, on behalf of your Evangelism Team: Carolyn Clement, Lu Cascio, Lori Fer-reira, Fred Fitzgerald, Judy Gessford, Kathy Oakes, Tara Smith, Jeff Sutton, Dana Wild, Kathy Zirolli, Rev. Ajung Sojwal
The next time CAYA (college age young adults) will meet will be Friday, August 11 at 11 am at the Ferreira's (8 South Center St Windsor Locks) for a summer good bye before everyone
goes back to school pool party! Bring some food to share, a bathing suit, and a towel. Any one
who is college age is invited. Any questions or if you need directions please contact Alyssa

St. Elizabeth House Ministry
There is always an opportunity for you to become involved with the St.
Elizabeth's ministry to folks who are trying to put their lives together and return
to being productive, sustaining individuals. We prepare meals that are served to
them twice a month, on Saturdays. There can never be too many helping hands!
For more information on how you can help with this very rewarding ministry,
please call me at 860-573-7775 or via e-mail at [email protected]. We are all busy
folks, but our support for this ministry is a support also for individuals who very much appreciate that
we are helping them reach their goals. God's love for everyone in action...thank you. Evelyn Golden
From the Town of Simsbury Social Services Dept.:
On behalf of the Simsbury Social Services Department, I would like to take this opportunity to thank
the members of the Trinity congregation for their recent contribution. The non-
perishable items you collected in your recent food drive, and donated to the Food
Closet was very impressive! We were able to restock the shelves for our needy res-
idents. Although the economy is slowly improving, many Simsbury families
continue to struggle and need our assistance. On behalf of those lives which will
be touched by your thoughtfulness, I thank you.
M. Lecours-Beck, Director
Memorial Garden Repaving
We are running out of burial space for the ashes of our loved ones in
the Memorial Garden. Therefore, this fall, we plan to repave the
space to make room for 40 more burial locations.
Our Re-Paving Party is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October
14th after the Men's Breakfast. As that's also the date of Lunch in the
Park and the Granby
Historical Society's Fall Flea
market, we may need to pick another date; stay posted.
We are looking specifically for someone who has access to a
Wet Saw and KNOWS HOW to use it.
We expect to be able to use about six workers. Sign up with
Steve Parker, your Jr. Warden, to assure you position on this
team.
Thank you, Lucian Cascio and Steve Parker
OUR HEALING MINISTRY
From The Healing Commission:
Although we are in the heat of the summer Healing
Prayers are still offered at the altar the first Sunday
of the month, August 6th at all services and at the back
of the church at the 9:45 service all other Sundays.
Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and let the
healing power come into your life.
Ponderings
Prayers should be the key of the
day and the lock of the night.
English proverb
Prayer Shawl Ministry
On the first Sunday of the month, the prayer shawls will be brought up for a blessing from the back of the church at the time of the offering. This is a time of making them more visible. Now that summer is upon us it makes it a little more difficult to spend time knitting or crocheting these comforting signs of Christ’s love. They have brought so much love to so many. Please consider making a shawl for someone in need. Blessings, Pat
Starting in September, at 5:00pm on the fourth Sunday of the month, Trinity will offer a service unlike any we’ve done - a Celtic Healing Service.
The liturgy at this service will be drawn from Celtic traditions, and the music will include both lively and contemplative pieces for voice and instruments. The service is relaxed, participatory, and inclusive, and all will feel welcome - including those who have little or no religious background.
Instead of a traditional sermon, a short meditation will be provided by a lay person. Each candlelit service will include Eucharist and an invitation to meditative healing prayer, and will last about one hour.
A team has been meeting weekly to pray and prepare for this meaningful service.
Who can you invite to join you at this service? Mark your calendar today - the Celtic Healing Service starts September 24th at 5:00pm.

Social Media Sunday is September 24, 2017!
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world
as a testimony to all nations… Matthew 24:14
As most of you probably know, Social Media Sunday was started right here at Trinity in Tariffville, in 2013.
On that day, everyone at church was invited to share something about faith or Trinity on social media, and it
was a smashing success! Our own parish hashtag - #tctville - was created on that first Social Media Sunday,
and the faithful have been sharing on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram ever since.
Since then, Social Media Sunday has spread throughout the Episcopal Church and now is an ecumenical
event - where people of faith everywhere are invited to be a part of sharing God’s story on social media. Last
year, people throughout the world participated, with over 10 million impressions on the hashtag.
I want everyone to start to think
“How can I participate in Social
Media Sunday this year?”
Can you take a picture at church? Can you share or
comment or like something you see on social media
about #SMS17? Can you check in online when you
arrive to church that day? Any social share will let
your friends and contacts know something about
your faith, our church, and the great God we serve.
You don’t have to post from church, you can post before or after church from home, from your phone, your
desktop or laptop. Don’t use social media? Just smile for a photo that someone else takes to be a part of the
event.
Look for an after-church workshop coming soon to learn more about how you can participate.
Questions? Find me after church or on - obviously - social media at @singingcarolyn.
And get ready to invite the world to come and see on September 24, 2017, using the hashtag #SMS17!

ATTENTION: Next Vestry meeting: July 18, 2017 beginning at 7:30 PM; with Faith Sharing
MINUTES OF THE VESTRY MEETING: TUESDAY, JUNE 20, 2017:
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Vestry was held Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in the Howard Chapel.
Present were: Mesdames: Lori Ferreira, Sayre Fournier, Sue Galici, Judy Gessford, Rose Hadsell, Nancy
Osborne, Dana Wild, Cynthia Williams, Deacon Pat Joy, and Rev Ajung Sojwal;
Messrs. Fred Fitzgerald, Anthony Galici, Troy McFarlane, Steve Parker, Rick Prechtl, Hank Rau, John
Reid, Mel Smith, and David Yoczik.
The meeting opened at 7:30 PM with prayer and faith sharing led by Deacon Pat Joy.
MINUTES OF THE MAY 16, 2017, VESTRY MEETING: Lori Ferreira made, and Nancy Osborne
seconded, a motion to accept the minutes of the May 16, 2017 Trinity Vestry meeting as presented. The motion
passed by majority vote with three abstentions.
INTERIM RECTOR’S REPORT:
Rev. Ajung wanted to thank all of the Vestry for attending the meeting and for the warm welcome that she has
received since coming to Trinity. She has moved into the rectory yesterday and wanted to thank Lou and Rose
Hadsell for their hospitality in the use of Lou's parents home in Burlington, Connecticut. There was a small
hiccup with the movers as the cost was slightly more than expected, about $4,000. Rev. Ajung hopes to have an
open house at the rectory sometime in the future to invite the parish for a time of fellowship.
The Trinity Vestry retreat is set for this weekend (June 24th) and Rev. Ajung will be sending out the agenda
along with other details about the retreat which will be held at Lou Hadsell's parents home in Burlington. Rose
Hadsell passed around a sign-up for people to bring food for the retreat.
Rev. Ajung has obtained multiple copies of the book "The Vestry Handbook" by Christopher L. Webber which
she will leave in the library for anyone to take out to read or use.
Rev. Ajung is meeting with various ministry groups to meet people and learn about the many, varied ministry
groups at Trinity.
Before Fr. Patrick Bush left for Virginia, Rev. Ajung and he had conversations about changing some aspects of the
Sunday 5:00 service. She is looking to have a once a month Celtic Service during the 5:00 service and recruit more
people to be a part of the Trinity Healing Team.
Rev. Ajung has called a worship advisory team together which will meet tomorrow to assist with aspects of the Sunday
worship service. They will work with Music Director Paula Kern and others to see how we can enhance the worship
experience.
Rev. Ajung may be asking the Vestry for additional funds in the future for the cleaning, repair, or replacement of Trini-
ty vestments once she has inventoried and determined what needs to be done to them.
Rev. Ajung indicated that she is in the process of exploring the possibility of having a "Trinity Ministry Fair" on the
first Sunday of October which will highlight the many ministries at our parish. Tables could be staffed with individuals
from a Trinity ministry with information about, and how to become more involved, in a particular ministry.
SENIOR WARDEN’S REPORT, Troy McFarlane reporting:
Troy sent out an e-mail to the Vestry indicating that the Trinity Discernment Committee was to meet with Bishop
Douglas at 6:30 pm today and that we should lift them all up in prayer. Troy commented that "time is moving swiftly
and it is very important at this time to listen to each other and pray with each other" during this time of discernment.
John Reid also indicated that "communication is critical" at this time for the Vestry and the parish. Troy indicated that
God has a plan, and we are doing our part in following the process. Troy will update the parish once we have more
information after the meeting between the bishop and the discernment committee. Another extended coffee hour may
occur in the coming months to allow parish discussion about the rector search process.
Troy will be meeting with Rev. Rebekah Hatch, on July 5th to talk further about the transition process.
JUNIOR WARDEN’S REPORT, Steve Parker reporting:
Steve indicated that the key cylinders for the exterior doors in the sanctuary as well as the double doors leading to the
parking lot have been replaced and forty keys have been distributed with more being made for others to have.
Reporting on the condition of the rectory oil tank, it was determined after further inspection that it still has some life in
it, and that we will not pursue an immediate replacement for it at this time.
OLD BUSINESS: Judy Gessford reported that the fee of $1,500 which had been used as a bond per action at the May 2017 Vestry meet-
ing to ensure that the property that formerly housed Rev. Ajung and family was left in proper condition was refunded in
its entirety.
NEW BUSINESS: Senior Warden Troy McFarlane inquired whether there was a dollar amount for checks to require
two signatures. Mel Smith indicated that he believed that the Vestry had indeed passed a motion within the last one-two
years that required checks over $10,000 to have two signatures. He will investigate past Vestry minutes and report his
findings at the next vestry meeting.
MINISTRY REPORTS: College Aged Young Adults (CAYA): Lori Ferreira reported that the group had a cook-in
at her home in Windsor Locks recently and that eight young adults attended and had a wonderful time. They will be
having a pool party at the Ferreira’s on Monday July 10th at 2:00 PM.
Music Ministry: Lori also reported that the choirs are on hiatus during the summer months and that various musicians
and small groups will be providing music during Sunday services until the fall.
Lunch in the Park: David Yoczik reported that he had bad news and good news. The bad news was that the need is
rising as summer approaches for the lunches provided to those in need in Hartford. The good news is that Trinity is
able to guarantee 80 meals once a month as part of this rotating ministry. Dave is very proud of the steadfastness of
those at Trinity who are involved in this very important ministry. Many hands make light work and Trinity certainly
does its part.
Kateri Medical Services: Cynthia Williams reported that the annual medical mission trip to Nigeria will be taking
place during July 7-23 this year. She asked that we lift up those that are going in prayer for safety, strength, and peace
during their medical mission of mercy to the two clinics they will be going to in Nigeria. She also indicated that the
latest Tapestry Singers concert series raised $11,000 to help pay for the medicines that will be used during the mission
trip. Troy commented that he had met Bishop Timothy Yahaya of Kaduna during his recent visit to Connecticut and
thanked all of those that assisted with the Tapestry Singers benefit and supporting the Kateri Medical Clinics.
Healing Hands: Rose Hadsell has been in touch with Jane Grant, chair of the Helping Hands Ministry, and they
are hoping to create a pool of volunteers to assist Jane with this ministry. Perhaps a small committee will be
formed in the future with different responsibilities being given to talented individuals to assist in specific ways such
as rides, food service, and minor home repairs. Recently many individuals from the men’s Saturday morning
group have indicated that they would like to assist with this ministry in some way.
Sunday School: Nancy Osborne reported that the Sunday school teachers have been fired for the summer and that
there will be a youth program during the summer months. She encouraged anyone to help assist Amanda with the
youth Sunday program during church services.
Evangelism: Judy Gessford reported that the Evangelism Committee meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
She also indicated that St. Bernard’s church is closing and that we should keep the parish members in our prayers
during this difficult time. Judy reported that the Memorial Day events were held at Trinity Church due to inclem-
ent weather and that they went very well.
Ushers: John Reid said that he is the Vestry liaison to the ushers and that he will be speaking to Bill Broda in the
coming months to determine if the ushers are in need of anything to aid them in their important ministry.
Fellowship: Troy commented on the huge turn-out and participation for the send-off for Fr. Patrick Bush and his
family. It was a very special time for the parish and the Bush family as they depart on a new adventure that God
has planned for them.
DECISIONS: No decisions were made by the Trinity Vestry.
ADJOURNMENT: Judy Gessford made, and Dave Yoczik seconded, a motion to adjourn. All approved the mo-
tion, and Rev. Ajung concluded the meeting with closing prayer at 8:45 PM.
Respectfully Submitted: Mel E. Smith, Parish Clerk...........................................................

AUGUST
August 6th – The Transfiguration
Psalm 99:6-9….When Moses and Aaron and Samuel, his prophet, cried to him for help, he answered
them. He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud, and they followed his instructions. O Jehovah our
God! You answered them and forgave their sins, yet punished them when they went wrong.
Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain in Jerusalem, for he is holy.
One of God’s greatest gifts is access to Him in prayer. Samuel had a high theology of prayer, as seen
when he said, “Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you.” But how can
a holy God hear the prayers of sinful humans? Verse 8 connects prayer access to God’s forgiveness. The
reference to cherubim reminds us of the Ark of the Covenant and the tabernacle where blood was sprinkled
to atone for sin. That was just a symbol. Jesus’s blood brings us with full assurance into the presence of a
holy God.
Lord, prayerlessness is a sin against You. It comes from a self-sufficiency that is wrong and that
dishonors you. Prayerlessness is also a sin against those around me. I should be engaging my heart and
your power in their needs. Lord, I pray with all my heart that You would give me a heart for prayer.
In Your Name….
August 13th – Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
1 Kings 19:11-16……“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as
Elijah stood there the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain; it was such a
terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind,
there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake,
there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a
gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his scarf and went out and stood at
the entrance of the cave.
Quietness is essential to listening. If we are too busy to sit in silence in God’s presence; if we are
preoccupied with thoughts or concerns about the day; if we have filled our minds for hour upon hour with
carnal interference and aimless chatter….then we are going to have difficulty listening for His still, small
voice. At some point during the day, be still before the Lord in prayer. You may find that late night or
early morning is a good time of solitude and quiet for you. A noonday walk in the park may be a time
when you can quiet your soul before the Lord.
So often we spend our prayer time talking to the Lord without spending any time simply waiting in silence
to see what He has to say to us. Take time to intentionally sit or kneel in silence before the Lord. Empty
your mind of all other thoughts. Concentrate on His Word and His presence with you. Ask Him to speak
to you.
Heavenly Father…thank you for the scriptures that show and remind us how to have that special and
quiet time with You in all places and all times. Lord we ask that you speak to our hearts so that we may
sit quietly in your presence. In Your Son’s name we pray….
August 20th – Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
Luke 12:51-53- Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather
division; for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and
two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against
daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-
law against mother-in-law.”
In these strange and unsettling words, Jesus revealed that His coming often results in conflict. He demands
a response, and close groups can be torn apart when some choose to follow Him and others refuse to do so.
There is no middle ground with Jesus. Loyalties must be declared and commitments made, sometimes to
the severing of other relationships. Life is easiest when a family believes together in Christ.
Heavenly Father, We lift up our family members who are still searching and seeking. We pray that you
will remove their blindness and soften their hearts to you. In your Son’s name….
August 27th – Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
Jeremiah 5:22-24 Have you no respect for me? Why don’t you tremble in my presence? I, the
LORD, define the ocean’s sandy shoreline as an everlasting boundary that the waters cannot
cross. The waves may toss and roar, but they can never pass the boundaries I set. But my people
have stubborn and rebellious hearts.
What is your attitude when you come into God’s presence? We should come with awe and respect, for
God sets the boundaries of the roaring seas and establishes the rains and harvests. God had to strip away
all the things that Israel had grown to respect more than Him. Without them, the people could once again
reverence God. Don’t wait until God removes the objects of your reverence and respect before you think
of Him as you should.
Heavenly Father, Forgive us when we put you onto the back burner and forget who You really are.
We get so caught up in the world around us, that it never enters our mind how holy and majestic you
really are. Help us with our casual attitude we have towards you. Remind us that yes you are a loving
Father, but you are also a just Father. In your Son’s name….
