Welcome to the inaugural issue of The City College of
New York’s Office of Government and Community Affairs newsletter.
This quarterly newsletter is aimed at highlighting our office’s
endeavors to fortify and expand City College’s presence within the
Harlem community.
As City College’s link to political and civic engagement, our
office is active on many fronts. We promote a passion for lifelong
learning to community youth through the management of grant
funded educational programs. Our Office of Events Management
ensures the successful execution of community-based and college
sponsored events on Campus. The Office of Government and
Community Affairs also serves as City College’s cultural connection.
We are most visible when reaching out to the community through
the visual and performing arts: from art exhibits on Amsterdam
Avenue to concerts and plays at Aaron Davis Hall, we are committed
to producing robust artistic and vanguard programs for City College
and the Harlem community.
In the President’s Strategic Plan, President Coico calls for a
college-wide culture steeped in the arts. In response to the
President’s initiative, art historian and quilt artist, Dr. Myrah Brown-
Green, was appointed Executive Director of Arts and Culture under
the Office of Government and Community Affairs. Dr. Brown-Green
curates both The Gallery at Aaron Davis Hall, and City’s community
gallery, Windows on Amsterdam. Most recently, Dr. Brown-Green
curated the popular “Harlem and The City” exhibit on Amsterdam
Plaza which brought together a diverse array of photography and
history, illustrating the remarkable interdependent relationship
between The City College and Harlem.
Aaron Davis Hall is another integral part of our office’s
commitment to the arts. Since becoming Managing Director of Aaron
Davis Hall in 2011, Gregory Shanck has hit the ground running,
programming events such as a tribute to legendary Latin music
composer and City Professor, Ray Santos, which brought together
great musicians from around the world. Aaron Davis Hall has also
presented R&B vocalist Lillias White, jazz and tap performer Andrew
Nemr, as well as avant-garde stage actor Daniel Beatty. In January,
Aaron Davis Hall received capital funding from the New York City
Council for renovations, ensuring Aaron Davis Hall will continue to
be one of Harlem’s premiere performing arts centers for years to
come.
Most importantly, the office of Government and Community
Affairs is City College’s political liaison. Within the next year, in
addition to the race for the Mayor and the Borough of Manhattan
Presidency, two Harlem City Council seats will be up for election. As
the names and faces of our key elected officials change, The City
College is committed to bridging communication between the
Harlem community and their city and state representatives.
For the past century, The City College of New York has
journeyed alongside the dynamic, ever-evolving community of
Harlem. We are proud of the great strides we have made and are
excited about the many challenges and successes that lie ahead. The
office of Government and Community Affairs is dedicated to keeping
the pace as the paths shift, to facilitate the bridge between the College and the Community.

The Harlem in the City Ambassadors Program provides both middle and high school
students with the tools to research a Harlem historical figure or event, write a paper about
who they have researched, and finally have that paper published. Selected students will be
chosen to present there research to an audience.
The first group of Harlem and the City Ambassadors came together on April 19, 2013. The
goal for each Harlem in the City Ambassador is to become:
“Keepers of Harlem history”
Published writers; able to present what they have written
Gain mentorship opportunities with college students and administrators
Network with fellow Harlem in the City Ambassadors

Arts and

This past February, Dr. Myrah Brown
Green was invited by the Michigan State
University Quilt Museum through the Cuesta
Benberry Endowment and the African
American and African Studies PHD Program
to deliver her lecture titled “A Quilter’s
Journey” to a group at Michigan State
University. Dr. Green is the first recipient of
the endowment, named for the late Cuesta
Benberry, a historian and scholar who
specialized in North American quilt culture of
the nineteenth through twenty-first centuries.
Michigan State University holds Benberry’s
collection of quilts, research, and various
other forms of scholarship. Presently
Benberry’s papers are being integrated into
Michigan State University’s research
database, MATRIX. During her visit to MSU,
Dr. Green had the opportunity to meet with
the administrators of MATRIX (Center for
Humane Arts, Letters, and and Social Sciences
Online). MATRIX is a multimedia initiative
specializing in expanding the use of new
technologies to enhance education and
research. Dr. Green and the leadership at
MATRIX discussed how City College could
benefit from a research think tank like
MATRIX. A database of its kind would support
City College’s academic endeavors. It could
also be an indispensable educational tool that
could benefit educators and researchers for
years to come. The City College continues to
explore new technologies and programs that
will aid in achieving the college’s vision of
becoming a world-renowned research
institution.

+ Aaron Davis Hall Partners with the Renowned African-American
Opera Company
From performances of Mozart in Harlem to
African-American Heritage concerts in Iceland -
Gershwin in Moscow to Duke Ellington in the
Caribbean, Opera Ebony is considered one of the
world's great cultural treasures. Benjamin
Matthews, Sister Mary Elise S.B.S. and Wayne
Sanders founded Opera Ebony in 1973. Since then,
the company has served as a professional platform
for thousands of American artists, administrators
and technical staff helping them to refine their
talent and perfect their craft. Opera Ebony is the
longest surviving African-American opera
company in American history.
Since 1988, Opera Ebony's impressive
repertoire has delighted overflowing audiences
throughout the United States and in Brazil, Russia,
Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Canada,
Switzerland and Martinique. The company has also
partnered with several major international
orchestras, opera companies and music festivals
including the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, the
Finnish National Opera, the Estonia Philharmonic
and the Savonlinna Opera Festival.
In 1998, Opera Ebony was selected as the
only American opera company to perform for the
opening of the Novaya Opera House in Moscow,
Russia. During the winter of 2000, members of
Opera Ebony appeared in performance and
engaging conversation on the PBS GREAT
PERFORMANCES series - Aida's Brothers and
Sisters: Black voices in Opera. For Black History
Month 2001, the company joined with the
Metropolitan Museum of Art to present the
premiere workshop performance of Harriet
Tubman, a new opera / musical theatre work by
acclaimed American composer, Leo Edwards.
In November of 2012 The City College of
New York’s Aaron Davis Hall hosted Opera
Ebony’s performance of “Sass n’ Class” featuring
music of Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel,
W.C. Handy, and Spirituals combined to create a
story of alluring intensity sung and spoken by
artists from Opera Ebony. This performance
marked the start of Opera Ebony’s 40th
Anniversary Season. It was also a homecoming
celebration for Opera Ebony and the start of a
partnership and residency with Aaron Davis Hall.
