Term 4 Week 5 Thursday, 9th November 2017

On 11 November 1918 at 11am, the guns of the Western Front fell silent. It was the end of the First World War. Since then, the 11th November (Remembrance Day) has been important, as a day for all Australians to stop, remember and pray for those who fought and died for our freedom.

Our reflection today is “The Ode” taken from the poem “For the Fallen”, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon

They went with songs to the battle, they were young. Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends

With only just over 4 weeks remaining, students and teachers are diligently working to maximise engagement and learning. Teachers are preparing student reports which will be provided for the students in the last week of term. The remainder of the term will continue to be busy with a variety of events happening. These are listed on the front of the newsletter, school calendar, on the website and special notices and flyers.

Year Level Arrangements Teachers will be arranging students in classes for next year based on our Splitting into Grades Policy which is on the school website. Parents/Caregivers who have requests must put these in writing addressed to the Principal by 25th of November. These requests will be taken into consideration but the final decision rests with the school. Writing to the Principal with your requests is not a guarantee that your child/ren will be allocated to your requested class.

Reconciliation On Wednesday evening many of our year three students received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. We extend our community prayers to the students, their families and teachers.

I thank the teachers for their guidance and preparation of the students, our families for the support and Fr Philip and Miss Harrison for co-ordinating the preparation program.

School Cyclic Review As you are aware St Munchin’s School Cyclic review was held last Monday and Tuesday. The panel of Mrs Sue Fox, Mr Andrew Colley, Ms Therese Hussey and Mr Tim Wong expressed their gratitude and affirmation to all members who participated in the process and were grateful in experiencing the day to day life of our wonderful school.

I extend our thanks to the panel for spending the two days in our school and providing the school with positive affirmation for many of the programs in place for our students and also discussing ideas that we can consider in the future.

School Board and P&F and Community AGM As advertised this community event will take place on Tuesday November 21st commencing at 7pm in the school hall.

The purpose of the Annual General Meeting is to present reports on the progress of 2017 and election of members to the School Board and P and F Committees. The School Board requires up to three more members and all positions in the P and F are open.

Please consider offering your services as a member of one of the above committees as your input is valued and appreciated and benefits the school community in general.

Special Forms containing details of the AGM and nomination forms were sent home two weeks ago. I f you did not receive this information from your child you may collect copies from the school office.

Deacon Konrad’s Ordination Deacon Konrad has been assisting Fr Philip in the parish over the past 18 months and has been not only a wonderful asset but has become one of our family members at St Munchin’s School.

Deacon Konrad will be ordained as a priest on Friday November 17. Let us keep Deacon Konrad in our prayers as he prepares to be ordained.

First Penance Congratulations to all the children and their families who celebrated and received the Sacrament of Penance last night. A huge thank you to Fr Philip, Mr Loh, Miss Molony, Mrs McCarthy and Mrs Ingram who prepared the children so thoroughly for the celebration and to Mrs Gonsalves for your endless and beautiful supply of music. May God’s love fill all who celebrated First Penance, with hope and peace, and inspire each one of us to be people of forgiveness in the world!

The St Vincent de Paul Society request your support of the Good Works of the Society within the local community.

Please join us for our Christmas Appeal Breakfast in the Parish Hall after the masses on Sunday 26 November. Your very own St Munchin’s Children’s Choir will be singing for you after the 9.30am mass and we look forward to your patronage.

CODING WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS Preparing Students for their Future, not Ours

When today’s students leave school, they will enter a world that is vastly different to the one we entered after

our schooling, even if it was just 10 years ago. Nearly every job today requires some knowledge of digital

technologies.

Next year all Australian schools will be implementing and reporting on ‘The new Digital Technology

curriculum’. This is not about creating a generation of computer programmers, it is about ensuring that every

possible door is open to our students when they leave education to enter the workforce. Education needs to

prepare students for their fast-changing, unpredictable and exciting futures. As the new curriculum is officially

rolled out across Australia this year, I have strong hopes that this will be achieved.

To help your child to develop their skills in coding/computational thinking we are running two workshops for

parents.

The first will be held in the IT room next Wednesday, 15th November, from 9.00 - 10.00 am. Please feel free

to bring your younger children with you.

The second workshop will be held also in the IT room on the evening of Thursday 7/12/17 from 6.30 - 7.30pm.

Please try to leave younger children at home on this day.

If you would like to attend any of these workshops then please return the slip below before the date of the

workshop.
