11th Macleay Island Classic 2019

The 11th Macleay Island Classic was held under beautiful conditions over

two days, March 23 and 24, 2019.

On Saturday, the main event was held for single and double canoes

including Ocean Skis, Double skis, OC1 and 2, and a couple of Stand up

Paddlers who completed the 15km around Macleay Island. Competitors

came from as far away as Ballina in NSW and to the north, Yeppoon.

On Sunday, it was the team events after which many competitors stayed

overnight and attended the Gala Event Dinner. The largest number was

from Bribie Island who managed to wrench the Relay trophy away from

the Barracoutas who had held it for about five years.

The other team event was the six person outriggers which totalled five,

the greatest number ever. After a spectacular start which was only

marred by a flip over by one OC6, the race was on to be first around the

Island. Although the OC6 from Ballina put up a great fight, local team

Pet's Pythons finally got the upper hand and crossed the line by a large

margin.

A great day was had by all with 99 paddlers on the water over the

weekend. All have said they will be back next year.

Many thanks to our major Sponsor Redland City Council and our many

other sponsors - also the 80 odd volunteers who fronted up on both days

to make the event so successful and of course our paddlers who came

from near and far to make the event so spectacular.
