MOUTH & TEETH
To break down food into smaller pieces and mix it with saliva so that it is easier to swallow.
SALIVARY GLANDS
Produce a liquid called saliva which contains enzymes that help break down food.
ESOPHAGUS
The muscular tube that squeezes food into your stomach.
STOMACH
A muscular sac that turns food into a liquid called chyme using muscles, enzymes, and acids.
LIVER
An organ that stores excess nutrients, toxins, and also makes bile which is used to break up the fats we eat.
PANCREAS
Makes hormones, regulates blood sugar, and makes enzymes that neutralize the stomach acid in chyme.
GALL BLADDER
Stores the bile made by the liver until it is needed by the small intestine.
SMALL INTESTINE
A 20 foot long, narrow muscular tube that is lined with villi that absorb nutrients from chyme into the bloodstream.
LARGE INTESTINE
A 5 foot long, wide muscular tube that removes excess water from waste turning it into poop.

APPENDIX
A small hollow area at the start of the large intestine that is of no use.
ANUS AND RECTUM
The rectum is where waste collects before leaving the body.
The anus is where waste exits the body.
