Editor’s Noteappy New Year!I want begin by thanking everyone who participated by voting and congratulate everyone who has been

recognized in the 2009 LocalsReview. I think that after you read this issue, you will agree that this is a Real LocalsGuide & Best Review Yet.

Just for the record, no winning spots were purchased or negotiated for ad sales, trades, favors or other.

Let me explain a little bit of the process. To begin with we had a huge amount of people voting online. (Thanks) This saved us a bunch of time be-cause these results were automatically stored into a spread sheet.

We then received enough mail in entries to keep our keep our P.O. Box jam packed. These entries were typed up and added to the spread sheet.

I then hired a mathmatics student to sort the submitted results and rank them according to the percentages of votes they received.

I thought you would find this interesting, because while some listings held very similar rankings some just Kicked Butt. You can see this with Morning Glory and it’s 30% Favor for Breakfast. But you also have to wonder what the other 55% of favorite date night restaurants were. That remains a local secret.

81 % of our votes came from Ashland w ith 9% from Medford, 6 % from Talent, 2% from Jacksonville and 2% from Central Point.

Our most senior voter was 72 and our yougestparticipant age 13. The average age was 42.

Overall we received some very interesting results. Some places I had never even heard of and this is the real gem of having a LocalsGuide.

noW For the Wall oF shame... Ouch...Ouch...this was a hot topic!!

Well I spoke with the LocalsGuide International legal team and they highly advised me to not print or post the results. Not even on the website :(

But I can say this. The winner for BIGGEST RIP OFFwas unanimous: THE IRAQ WAR

Enjoy this issue, and remember if your business was not mentioned you remain a Local Secret.

Have you ever had a dog?

Yes I mean that kind of dog! The kind that makes you want to get a parakeet, or a guinea pig instead. The kind of dog that make muzzles and tranquilizers not off the chart of possibility. Well if you ever have, you’ll love Marley & Me.

The movie, starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston was funny, sweet, poignant, and oh so true if you own a pet…AND would definitely make Cesar Milan cringe every 3rd minute. Owen Wilson plays a newspaper reporter who decides to get his wife a present. A present in the form of a four legged, fur covered, empty pit of Golden Lab puppy. This dog takes over their entire lives, wrecks their house, and gets kicked out of obedience school. This movie tells the story of their lives together, their growing family, and how Marley both enriches AND makes their life living hell. Like any pet or family member, Marley is at time destructive, mostly exasperating, extremely loyal, and always loving.

I really liked this movie, it was laugh out loud funny, it was very sweet and poignant, and even though it has a very expected “emotional ending” it still made me tear up in a good way. I particularly liked Kathleen Turner’s cameo as the hard as nails Dog obedience trainer. She’s great. Marley & Me is a great biography and homage to man’s best friend. (or his worst enemy…depending on the day.)

One thing…when my friend and I were going up to the theater, the whole movie was almost spoiled by an usher who said he’d heard it was similar to “Old Yeller” Based on that, we almost left the theater, because neither of us wanted to have that much emotional wreckage tossed about on wintry afternoon. However we decided to tough it out, and I can gladly say…..Old Yeller it ain’t!

New Business Profilename: Stephanie Summers age 29 location Ashland Business name: Green Baby Bliss.com

Website: www.GreenBabyBliss.com Can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind starting your business? The inspiration for Green Baby Bliss began over 2 years ago when my amazing daughter Lillian was born. As any parent knows, we all want to raise happy healthy babies! It’s the insight that I have gained as a parent which has inspired me to create greenbabybliss.com.

In the beginning I had very little information about leaching plastics, lead in toys, the importance of organic cottons and other sustainable fabrics, etc. One day I happened to stumble upon an article about plastic leaching in baby bottles, cased by the chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA). I was completely shocked and immediately continued my research. Shortly after this, major toy manufactures began recalling children and baby toys after finding high levels of lead and other hazardous chemicals.

I began to really focus on natural, safe and organic products for my daughter. I also recognized how important it was to get this message out to other families. I set out to create a site where parents and loved ones could find natural, safe and organic baby products all in one place.

What does BPa Free mean?BPA stands for Bisphenol-A. It is used in the production of epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics. BPA-Free means a product is free of this chemical. The majority of all bottles and sippy cups are made up of plastics that use the chemical BPA. Research shows that BPA leaches and transfers into beverages which are then consumed. Furthermore, beverages which are heated in products containing BPA or bottles that are sterilized by boiling are at an even higher risk of leaching BPA. Additionally, overtime the more a bottle or sippy cup is used the more it leaches BPA and becomes more dangerous.

The most alarming problem with BPA is that animal studies have shown that over exposure of the chemical can lead to prostate cancer, breast cancer and even plays a role in the obesity and diabetes epidemic. Research also shows that BPA can cause early puberty and a decrease in male fertility.

What are some of the most unknown issues with toxic toys that parents might not be aware of?The majority of toys that our children play with are made of plastic and plastic is made of chemicals. Children put toys into their mouths all the time; some of these chemicals may enter their bodies. Some of the substances, which are not always chemically bound to the products, may also be released directly onto skin, or into the air that children breathe. Toys painted with lead based paint can have the same effect. This is a very big issue and I highly recommend the website www.HealthyToys.org for further information.

What is your favorite product(s)?That is a really hard question simply because all products and brands sold on Green Baby Bliss are specifically chosen for a reason and even “tested” on my own little one! We offer a variety of recycled wooden and organic cotton toys, cloth diapers, organic bedding and clothing, even safe baby skin care products. I love them all! recycled Plastic green toys...Can you explain this?Yes, a great company called “Green Toys” has created 4 products (all of which I sell) that are all made in the USA out of recycled milk jugs. In addition they are all BPA free! The one my daughter Lilly likes best is the Tea Set. It is colorful, sturdy and perfectly safe (no plastic leaching) for sipping water or juice, so I have no worries when she plays Tea Party.

Green Toys’ environmental mission even extends to their packaging. Striving, to minimize packaging, all of the boxes use as little material as possible. All Green Toys products are packaged in recycled corrugated boxes with no plastics, cellophane or twist-ties, and are 100% recyclable.

i love how you organized your online store by activity, for example Play time and let’s eat. Yes, I really wanted to make the site fun to shop on and get away from the traditional categories you see on other websites. Many products share the same categories, but my hope it that it is a real engaging way to shop the site! Your business is primarily based online but you also do local delivery how have you been getting the word out about what you are doing? What has the response been?I have been advertising locally, as well as creating flyers and putting those up around town (with my business cards). I also placed a special link on my site for local delivery. As the weather gets nicer, it will be a real pleasure to meet up with parents who are out and about with their children and hand them my business card. I offer this service free of charge in residential areas of Ashland/Talent/Phoenix. I love the idea that a new parent can be at home with their new baby and have natural and safe baby products delivered to their door with out any worry! Southern Oregon is my home and I really feel this type of service is great for my community!

The response has been pretty good, as with any new business you have to prove yourself to your shoppers and that is exactly what I am setting out to do.

Send Us Your Review [email protected]

By ChezhoodBambuWe had lunch in Medford today. We met in a shopping center on the road that runs by Home Depot.

It’s quite an interesting area. there are a few pretty nice shops, a very high priced clothing store with designer items and plenty of Bling. There is a supermarket, Albertsons, and then there is Bambu.

Bambu is really quite THE place for lunch. On trying to make a reservation, the woman who answered the phone could barely hear me due to the background noise. Well, I thought, annoying, but a very good sign.

On our arrival at opening time, 11.30am, we were not the first ones there, and by the 12 noon the place was completely full. This was Wednesday lunch, 2 weeks before Christmas, in a shopping center. Incredible!

We were warmly welcomed and shown into a comfortable booth. The wall art was simple and tasteful and overall an elegant choice. The lunch menu is one laminated card. Its a very simple idea. There are a choice of 4 appetizers, and 10 mains.

What is pretty unique is that you can either pay the flat a la carte priceor mix it up and enjoy a combination of two or even three dishes, appetizers and/or mains for a set price. You will also get a really nice refreshing cucumber salad and rice as side dishes. On the reverse of the menu is also the weekly specials, and today, Wednesday, it was chicken in a red thai curry sauce.

What did we have? Well I have to tell you that in the spirit of research and of great personal sacrifice, we went a bit crazy! We both ordered the combination plate with 3 items: I had chicken curry wontons, shanghai baby back ribs and crispy fish. Oh and we had to have a portion of crab cakes. I always have crab cakes, they are like a bench mark for me! These crab cakes were excellent. They were simply crab, with a light dusting of breadcrumbs and lightly fried. They were served with a creamy red curry aioli and a small

salad with a very tasty balsalmic / soy dressing. A real winner for me.

Moving swiftly on, to the wontons. These were light and crispy and the filling had a delicate curry flavour, and freshly cooked. I wouldn’t have minded a bit more kick to the filling, but overall an ideal small plate. These were served with a sweet and sour sauce. The ribs were meltingly tender, the sauce a little too Hoi Sin for me, but quite delicious. The crispy fish was Icelandic cod. A moist nicely cooked portion served with a sweet chili sauce. Good size portions of everything, without it being overwhelming.

My partner in crime had the Tiger roll, the daily special, the red thai curry, and some Pad Thai chicken.

The Tiger roll, a light crispy cigar shaped pastry stuffed with creamcheese and a mixture of crab flakes, chili sauce and a few other flavours that made this a perfect three bite taster. The Pad Thai had a clean and fresh taste, with a real zing to it. The all-round favorite had to be the daily special of the red thai chicken curry. It was really good. Just the right amount of heat for us, a good clean creamy coconut taste without it missing the zing of the lemongrass, and the essential fish sauce. Yummmm. I really enjoyed the cucumber salad. Its a refreshing light salad that complements all the other delicious things, without filling you up or clashing.

As you may imagine, we were unable to fit in dessert. I assure you, I wont let you down the next time I go to Bambu, and I do plan to go back there very soon. Although this task is now over, It could never have been described as a chore. happy new Year and happy eating

Movie Review

the day the earth stood still

i remember in the third grade when Billy Manning stood up and said to the teacher Klaatu, Barada, Nikto. Twenty years later while working for ABC News I was shocked when the sports caster turned to the News director and said. Klaatu, Barada, Nikto. Now, it’s my turn to say to you. Klaatu, Barada, Nikto. Saturday I saw The Day the Earth Stood Still. This was the remake of the 1951 movie of the same name. Keanu Reeves played Klaatu (I have no idea what Barada Nikto means), Jennifer Connelly played the science researcher, and Kathy Bates played the representative for the President who, we assume is in hiding. Jaden Smith played a brat, but I’ll get to that in a bit. In 1928, a mountaineer encounters a glowing sphere while on an expedition in the snowy mountains of India. He then finds himself awakening after a sudden loss of consciousness, with the sphere now gone and a scar on his hand. The mountain climber looks a lot like Keanu Reeves. Now, flash to the future and a giant sphere landing in Central Park, out comes an alien who gets shot by a trigger happy military type. He is taken to a hospital where he seems to shed some skin and lo and behold Keanu Reeves pops out. It’s not long after this that he reveals his name as Klaatu and that he has come to save the Earth. But he didn’t come alone his traveling companion is Gort a giant robot that only reacts to his command or a violent act. I’ll break away at this point so as not to become a spoiler. Keanu Reeves does a good job with the odd role of Klaatu, and the special effects were well done. Of course it was a movie with a message and there were a few twists,

some you’ll catch others will surprise you. And I can say that the world does stand still at one point, but I won’t tell when. The movie holds together well with a little cat and mouse between Klaatu and the US government.

Jaden Smith, Will Smith’s, son played a brat. He has a good role and plays it well. But for the first two thirds of the movie he reminds you of the brat in the super market that wants his mother to buy him something. But unlike the kid in the supermarket Jaden Smith redeems himself toward the end of the movie.

If you like Science fiction then you will like the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I mentioned in the beginning that this was a remake. I went out and rented the 1951 version and found some interesting crossovers. 1951 Klaatu wanted to save mankind. 2008 Klaatu wants to save the earth, not the people. In the 1951 version there is a scene with Klaatu and the heroin in the front seat with a little kid in the back seat. That same scene was created in the 2008 version. Hmm, I guess the director thought it was a powerful scene. In the 1951 version Klaatu visits a famous scientist. The same scene is played out in the 2008 version with of all people John Cleese as the scientist. In both movies Klaatu said that the population of the earth was going to get the death ray if they didn’t stop…in the 1951 version we were told to stop warring in the 2008 version I guess the Aliens have given up on mankind because Klaatu warns that he will destroy all mankind saving only the animals. My only regret is that at the end of the movie I still hadn’t learned what Klaatu Badada Nikto means.

“Oh,” replies the husband, “She’s my mistress.”

“Well, that’s the last straw,” says the wife. “I’ve had enough, I want a divorce!”

“ I can understand that, “ replies the husband, “ but remember, if we get a divorce it will mean no more shopping trips to Paris, no more wintering in Barbados, no more summers in Tuscany, no more Jaguar in the garage and no more yacht club, but the decision is yours.”

Just then, a mutual friend enters the restaurant with a gorgeous woman on his arm.

“Who’s that woman with Moishe? “ asks the wife.

“That’s his mistress,” says the husband.

“Ours is prettier,” she replies.

Car of the Month

do you have an interesting or unique automobile or motorcycle you would like to have featured in the LocalsGuide? tell us about it: email: [email protected] or Call 482-4713

Is That Your Dad’s Car? (NOPE)

When I was growing up my dad told me this crazy story about some kid who had saved every single penny he had ever found. He saved so many he had to have a tractor trailer come and haul it away. Then he went out and bought a car.

I’m not sure if that was a true, but here is an even a better story. Don’t just buy a car...

BUY A PORSCHE and then drive it across the country ... without your parents!!! Kids Take Note:

i sold my 71 Trans Am and my 69 Mustang and all 3 of my motorcycles to have enough cash to go buy this Porsche that I’ve been looking at on the internet.

I then flew out of Medford at 6am on Monday 11th August 2008 with $14,000.00 cash in my back pack to purchase a 1983 Porsche 911 Carrera Wide Body in North Carolina.

I flew my best friend Dakota out to meet me in North Carolina. Now in Raleigh it was a reunion in deed to see Dakota, we were never so glad to see each other.

We hailed a taxi and headed to Durham to meet up with the owner of the Porsche. The Porsche looked good. We took it to the Porsche garage to have it serviced and quickly paid the owner his asking price. After a long process of dealing with the North Carolina DMV and the North Carolina Vehicle Licensing agent we headed out on the open road.

We traveled west on I-40 towards Tennessee at around Asheville we couldn’t stay awake any longer so we decided it was time to stop it was almost 9pm, we stopped at KOA on the east side of Asheville looking for a space or cabin to rent and to my surprise I need to be 21 years old to rent a space at KOA even though I have my own credit cards and cash. So not believing this I stopped at another one and same story. Wow then I stopped at a Motel 6 and Days Inn in Asheville same story again. They won’t rent to me because I’m not 21. So on we went we finaly found the Midway Motel 26 miles from the Tennessee border. Thank you Midway!

We then logged 3900 miles in 9 days with only 1 CD (Tom Petty) to listen to and went through 11 states with no car trouble, no ticket and no injuries. It was a perfect trip and I’m glad to be back in the Rogue Valley.

What was it like when you saw the car? I fell in love with the car instantly, (it needed some minor work) but a great car.

did the owner know you were under 21? Yes the owner was in dis-belief that me and my 17 year old best friend flew across the country to buy his car.

how the heck did your parent decide to let you do this? Well it wasn’t easy for them

I’m sure. But they know I’m responsible and they’ve known Dakota since elementary school.

What did people think when they looked over in the pass-ing lane and saw you two guys driving this awesome car? We got many thumbs up, and met alot of amazing people on the trip. We traveled with a blue STI on and off, from Arkansas to Texas, and a C6 Corvette with two older guys for 100-200 miles.

Biggest assumption people make about you now that you have a Porsche?Well when I got it home there were alot of “Is that your dad’s car?” but pretty soon the small town of Ashland was familiar with the fact that I bought this car with my own money.

is it fun? It’s the greatest, fastest reacting car I’ve ever driven. I can stop on a dime and take a corner hard enough to make my eyes sore.

What’s your next adventure? I don’t know about the adven-ture. (there may be plenty) but I’m thinking the next car will be an E46 BMW M3.

Ashland Real Estate2008 At A Glance*

What an interesting year in real estate we have all experienced. That being said, it seems Ashland has continued to hold its own. Many of us have said time and time again that things are different around here and after reviewing the year’s statistics, it seems we were on to something. For those trying to sell their Ashland property in 2008, this year may have been rather frustrating. As you can see, the number of homes that sold is down significantly. Ironically, the prices of those properties that did sell seem to be unaffected. Given the increase in inventory for Buyers to choose from, there is no surprise it took longer to sell homes in 2008 as compared to 2007. More than once, about the time someone was ready to make their decision, three more homes in the same price range would come on the market, giving them that much more to see and also to think about. The most active price range for Ashland in 2008 was between $300k-$500k. However, given the state of the economy, we still had impressive activity in the $1 million + price ranges with the highest sale registering at just over $2.6 million.

As an Ashland homeowner and Real Estate Broker, I found this change in the market to be much needed. In my opinion, it brought a balance to our housing market as well as our industry. Sure, it wasn’t an easy transition but that’s okay. It curbed the activity for the Sellers looking to make a ridiculous profit in a short amount of time and it eliminated the Brokers dabbling in the business. Real estate has consistently been a fantastic invest-ment and that hasn’t changed. With interest rates hovering at 5% it remains an excellent time to purchase. I was fortunate to participate in dozens of transactions this year and found it quite rewarding to see many young families, retirees, single parents and first time home buyers finally having affordable housing inventory to choose from in Ashland. I am blessed to live and work in a fantastic community and honored to be part of the Gateway Real Estate Family which in 2008, continued the tradition of being the top poducing real estate office in Ashland.* InformationwascollectedfromtheSouthernOregonMultipleListingServiceandisdeemedreliablebutnotguaranteed.
