The Colonist APR / MAY 20 3

Architectural Reminders by Eileen Tsai APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS - Applications are still required if you are planning to alter parts of your property open to public view, including fence, gate, and grounds such as driveways, walkways and plantings. Emergency repairs, such as roof leaks and broken windows, can be made immediately and do not require applications if replacement ma-terials match existing appearances. However, if the entire roof or all windows are being replaced and will look differ-ent, then an application is required before work starts. Please bring a blueprint if home building remodel is involved. Also, minor plant replacements or additions do not require applications, but major landscaping alterations do –like installing artificial turf to replace sod grass, removing trees and replacing with succulent plants and rocks or decom-posed granite. No application is needed for backyard patio or fence unless visible to the public. For landscaping changes, a list of plants to be installed plus a drawing of the landscape when finished are both re-quired. The Colony is intended to be a green community, not a desert landscape so please be sure your yard will be mostly green when plants have matured. Choosing succulents that spread can help create a green desert space while conserving water. Some rocks are okay, but we want to see your yard mostly covered with colorful flowers, trees ,and bushes when mature. You can provide a habitat for birds, bees, and insects to feed and nest too! FREE PLANTS I have enjoyed giving away more than 250 pots of plants annually at our 4th of July event. I still need to say good-bye to the many pots of plants that keep getting bigger in my yard. Please come by anytime and help yourself to any plant in a nursery pot for free. I only ask that you return the pots when done planting. I use good soil from Armstrong gar-den centers and try my best to keep plants trimmed and healthy. Ask me for plant names and I am happy to give you a copy of pages from Sunset Western Garden Book for growing advice.

The plants are mostly easy to grow succulents, geraniums and California natives, including a lot of aeoniums (green and darker varieties up to 4’ tall and wide), portulacaria afra (elephant’s food – these make nice hedges 3’-6’ tall and wide easy to trim into almost any shape), jade plant (dark green bushes up to 3’ tall and wide or more), blue chalkfin-ger groundcovers (3 varieties including gray-green and yellow of differ-ent sizes and shapes with white or yellow flowers), pig’s ear (cotyledon with small hanging orange flowers), iceplant groundcover with bright magenta flowers, kalanchoe groundcover with yellow flowers. I also have a few California native groundcovers – coast aster with purple flowers/yellow centers, seaside daisy with pink flowers, California fuch-sia with bright orange flowers, yarrow with white flowers, and Douglas

iris with purple/white or yellow flowers. I also have a few other plants including one that I can’t figure out the name of. Please come by anytime and pick up free plants– I will probably be home during coronavirus time if not working in my yard – but no need to ring doorbell. I don’t want to put my address out in public, but most people in the Colony know where I live or ask a Board member. Have fun! THINGS TO DO AT HOME The Colony tea social is postponed to October 6th – hopefully no need to postpone further if coronavirus danger is over by then. Here are some ideas for things to do when stuck at home with extra time – with or without children:

Read a new book or re-read an old favorite - Aagood habit to get into anytime and no internet required. Livestream over Internet—ask you friends and family what they recommend. Play board games – teach your kids or grandkids a board game such as Monopoly or a card game like Go Fish!, or even start a jigsaw puzzle. Email or write letters or send cards to friends and family

– most of us have lots of unasked for cards to use. Call and chat with extended family or friends– now both of you may have no need to rush.

Make up stories with children and listen to their concerns and ideas – enjoy your imagina-tions! Enjoy conversations with family and write a book of short stories together Draw or do other art projects. Re-arrange furniture or re-decorate using items found in garage or other hiding places. Build a dollhouse or other structure together – have kids take measurements, using math and building skills! Find new recipes and try cooking or baking new foods together. Venture out to an ethnic market and explore new foods – or try a new tea.

Go on scavenger hunt or invent new games to play inside and out-we are lucky to have backyards, let’s use them! Explore the Internet and find a new hobby or other ideas for things to try. Clean the house – you have plenty of time, and might even discover treasures! Work on garden – pull weeds, add mulch, trim bushes and trees, get free plants from Eileen. Do weekly yard hunts, especially after rains, to get rid of mosquito breeding places – this can be fun for kids good at finding small wet spots – and remove and or empty items that hold water, such as pots, saucers, piles of dead leaves or debris, even chil-dren's toys. It takes only one tablespoon of standing water for some mosquitos to breed! Inspect house for any needed work, repair or hire workmen as needed (keep 6’ distance away). What can you add to this list – what works for you?

Coronavirus is forcing everyone to put busy lives on pause. Let’s take this opportunity to slow down and enjoy one another. Take time to understand friends and family better and hopefully improve future relationships. We should re-evaluate what is truly important to each of us and what really makes us happy. Let’s make the best use of the time we have. All good wishes, Eileen
