2006 ANNUAL REPORT

Two men died this year. Both were former guests. One died with keys in his pocket, the other without any.

Bruce first came to the GUEST HOUSE in 1997 in his forties. He struggled from numerous health issues that made it difficult to secure work and maintain an apartment. He bounced in and out of the shelter for a few years – not certain about what he might do. He loved music, especially jazz; friends knew of his gifted keyboard playing. In 2004, he came back into the shelter, and this time he stayed. He attended classes, obtained counseling, and moved into the permanent housing program. He went to church, began dating, and got a part-time job while he completed training for his commercial driver’s license. And in October, he died from heart failure. The good news was that his family and friends were able to be notified immediately. And they acknowledged how much his success at the GUEST HOUSE had given them the comfort of knowing his address and his phone number.

Jerome first came to the GUEST HOUSE in 2001 in his thirties. He suffered from chronic depression and used alcohol to ‘medicate’ his pain, preventing him from securing work or housing. He bounced in and out of local shelters for a few years. He loved art; his family commented on his gift for rendering beautiful drawings. In March, he came back into the shelter, but as in the past – he left after just a few days. Staff members saw him wandering in the neighborhood and encouraged him to return. His family urged him to attend their church. In December, Jerome froze to death on a set of stairs on the north side, a fact many learned of from a newspaper obituary even colder than those stairs must have been that night when the temperature dropped below 15 degrees.

No one knows if Bruce and Jerome ever met, but what is known is both that the work of the GUEST HOUSE is a key to our community’s ability to respond to the challenges of our homeless neighbors and that the support of our many partners is vital to having more endings written like Bruce’s. A key to ensuring that no one should ever freeze to death on our streets, in our city, in this nation.

There is no mistaking the sound and feel of the lock’s bolt as it snaps intoplace – pushed by the turning of key against a set of well-oiled tumblers.

A lock.Attached to a door.

Attached to a home.Where I feel safe.

Where I collect my memories.Where I rest.

The key is a powerful symbol of confidence, accomplishment, and security carried in a pants pocket to the grocerystore, to the bank, to a college classroom, or to work – and ultimately back home again.

Many of our neighbors have many keys: car keys, garage keys, office keys, house keys, mailbox keys. Others amongus lack a single key.

For over 24 years, the GUEST HOUSE has been the figurative key for these neighbors to unlock their human potential and fulfill their most basic dreams for security, comfort, and self-esteem. We give our guests keys and everything they represent.

The GUEST HOUSE gratefully acknowledges the support of the families of Bruce and Jerome in allowing us to publish their stories to illustrate how farwe have come and how much is left to do to end homelessness.

A Message from the President

Dear Friends,

Often finding a theme for the annual report to the community can be far less than scientific and occasionally border on silly. This was not such a year. By the close of 2006, the GUEST HOUSE reached a critical milestone in our important efforts to address homelessness in our city and beyond:

For the first time in our history, more guests are being supported in permanent housing units throughout the community than are using beds in the emergency shelter each evening.

Over 100 formerly homeless neighbors now have keys in their pockets to their own homes, thanks in large part to the commitment of our many partners – both public and private – to fundamentally changing the way we support our friends in need. If you are reading this, you are one such friend, and on behalf of the GUEST HOUSE Board of Directors please accept my sincere thanks for continuing to remember the GUEST HOUSE in your philanthropic offerings.

There are many exciting stories from the past year, and we’ve selected a few to share in this report that we feel strongly represent the overall success of the organization at achieving its mission:

“The GUEST HOUSE OF MILWAUKEE provides shelter, housing, education, and services to Milwaukee’s homeless, who seek to transform their lives with dignity and purpose.”

Thank you again for your generosity. Please help share the GUEST HOUSE story with like-minded friends and family who might also wish to donate cash or clothing or spend time volunteering in service. In many ways, the success of the GUEST HOUSE reflects the shared values of our community to ensure no one is less than fully worthy of life’s most basic necessities: food, clothing, and shelter.

Sincerely,

Brad Murray, President

GUEST HOUSE Alumni Serve as Examples, Offer EncouragementAsk anyone who has spent a few nights on the streets: cold, hungry, alone. Getting into a shelter can be restorative and cleansing in more and deeper ways than a warm shower or a soft blanket might otherwise suggest. Then comes the day when you leave that shelter – then what? Until this year, the best offering to these “graduates” might be a few toiletries and a list of community agencies to visit. The immediate and complete disconnecting from the people and programs that have helped you to reclaim your independence could often be disconcerting. Little wonder then that you might stumble right back into the street when faced with your first challenge back in the community.

“We needed to have a way for guys who’ve left the GUEST HOUSE to continue to feel the support they felt during their stay,” notes Rick Brumfield. Since he left the shelter in 1995, Rick has worked on staff and seen thousands of guests come through the front doors. Each guest has a unique history, but they all share a current need to experience respect and a sense of belonging that does not end when they trade their shelter bed for one in their own apartment or home.

Rick discovered this feeling was commonly held by many GUEST HOUSE alumni and began to hold informal meetings to discuss how they might rely on one another as a source of strength and shared stories. The meetings quickly became regular bi-weekly gatherings of men, sometimes numbering more than 20, where discussions were held on every topic from relationships with women to securing meaningful employment. GUEST HOUSE staff members volunteered to fix meals for the alumni, and soon enough – the discussion topics turned to ways the men could help the current guests in the emergency shelter and transitional housing programs.

First, the group needed a name – one that represented their success and position as role models of what is possible. They found a perfect one: “Living Proof.” In the early summer, the “Living Proof” members began meeting once each month with new shelter guests in what was a kind of combination rally and revival. The alumni spoke openly about their personal struggles with homelessness, addiction, anger, depression. And perhaps more importantly, they listened to current guests, acknowledging their concerns about a seemingly uncertain future and encouraging them to engage in everything the GUEST HOUSE offered.

In the fall, the Board of Directors approved the creation of the “Living Proof Alumni Award” to honor guests who’ve been successful outside the shelter for at least two years, established regular income, and maintained healthy living (including some time spent volunteering at the GUEST HOUSE or in other service to the homeless). At the 2006 GUEST HOUSE GALA, six inaugural awards were presented to William Black, Rick Brumfield, Jarado Glass, Larry Leake, Larry Moore, and James Shauntee. Each man was awarded a trophy, and the names of each were added to a plaque on display in the shelter recreation room.

Jarado sees a bright future for the group – as their scope expands to include talking to at-risk youth, churches, and other audiences who need to hear directly from men who’ve survived the struggle and can speak pointedly to the need to make smart choices. “I use the conversations in the Living Proof meetings to help me trust myself,” he notes, “since ultimately it is up to me to keep joy in my life. The opportunity to impart some of what I learned from spending many years as a homeless man can perhaps help give a current guest a little extra confidence that better days lie ahead.”

The message of the group is clear – they are proof that every man who wants it can start living the life he wants today. While the journey is not easy, the triumph is worth the investment of physical, spiritual, and emotional energy. And the GUEST HOUSE alumni will help him along that path and celebrate with him as he too becomes…living proof.
