Licensing for road rallies is covered by temporary membership of the organising club ( often included in the entry fee

) or by a £27

clubman' s licence available from the Motor Sports Association with no test or medical required . To do well in timed navigational sections , called regularities , you need to have a tripmeter fitted

( £250-500 ) , and some minor protection such as a

sump guard is advisable for special tests. Stage rallies on closed roads or tracks require

much more safety kit and car preparation , but are equally welcoming to beginners once you' ve passed a day' s training to obtain the licence ( about £280 all-in ).

FIRST-TIMETOURERS Ken and Clara Waylett jumped in at the deep end when they took their classic on a foreign tour for the first time . First ,

their 1972 MG Midget was fresh from a nut-and-bolt rebuild with only 1500 miles under its belt . Second , the event was Scenic Car Tours' Arctic Highway Challenge - 4000 miles from Denmark to the Arctic Circle and back , via Finland and the Russian border.

'

We were given route books to guide us between hotels ,' says Clara , ' but the routes weren' t compulsory as it wasn' t

competitive . The challenge came from the distances , usually 150-200 miles every day , and changes in the weather - we went from applying sun block to driving through falling snow.'

The MG was only 60 miles from the return ferry when one of its new brake linings failed . ' Scenic Car Tours were brilliant - they sorted out a different ferry crossing before the RAC had agreed to recover the car . One thing I recommend is to be sure you know you' re covered If you break down abroad.'

Despite the hiccup at the end , Clara has only one message for anyone pondering a similar trip .

'

Just go for It - it will be the trip of a lifetime.'
