Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

As we read through the gospels, we readily see that

Jesus has special care and concern for the suffering

and the marginalized, particularly the sick. The

gospels are replete with examples of all kinds of

different encounters that took place between Jesus and

the sick. Visiting the sick is not only one of the works

of mercy, but caring for the sick has always been

considered an integral part of the Church’s mission.

In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus reminds us, “The poor

and the sick you will always have with you.” The

Church continuously finds them along her path,

considering those who are sick as a privileged way to

encounter Christ, to welcome Him and to serve Him.

The sick of every parish actually have a very vital role

in the life of every parish in that we believe that when

a person suffers and unites their sufferings to the

sufferings of Christ, they are intimately united with

the person of Christ. Therefore, their prayers with and

for the community of believers have special value.

Here at Ascension, we are still trying to create a data

base of our homebound and shut ins and those who are

sick and thus unable to attend Mass. (We have a bit of

a data base for Spanish-speaking parishioners, but not

for English-speaking parishioners.) We know that

some parishioners are homebound temporarily while

others, because of age or chronic illness are long term.

We would very much like to reach out to the sick, and

be sure they are visited and cared for on a regular basis

by someone from Ascension. We would like to offer

the sacraments to them, but very often, someone alone

just needs a visit and a smiling face. If you know of

anyone who is sick or elderly, we would be grateful if

you would put us in contact with them or them with

us. You can call the rectory or you can send an e-mail

to me at [email protected] or to Raya Abat at

[email protected]. This sick are always the object

of God’s special care and affection.

PASTOR’S LETTER NOTAS DEL PASTOR

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

A medida que leemos los evangelios, nos damos cuenta

enseguida que Jesús cuida y tiene una preocupación

especial por los que sufren y los marginados, en particular

por los enfermos. Los evangelios están repletos de

ejemplos de todas clases de diferentes encuentros que

tomaron lugar entre Jesús y enfermos. El visitar a los

enfermos no es solo una de las obras de caridad, sino que el

cuidar de los enfermos siempre ha sido considerado como

una parte íntegra de la misión de la iglesia.

En el evangelio de Mateo, Jesús nos recuerda, “Los pobres

y los enfermos los tendrán siempre entre ustedes.” La

iglesia continuamente los encuentra en su camino,

considerando a aquellos que están enfermos como un

camino privilegiado para encontrarse con Cristo, darle la

bienvenida y servirlo.

Los enfermos de cada parroquia en verdad tienen un papel

vital en la vida de cada parroquia, ya que creemos que

cuando una persona sufre y une sus sufrimientos a los

sufrimientos de Cristo, están íntimamente unidos con la

persona de Cristo. Por lo tanto, sus oraciones con y para la

comunidad de creyentes tienen un valor especial.

Aquí en la Ascensión todavía estamos tratando de crear una

base de datos de nuestros recluidos y confinados en casa y

los que están enfermos y de este modo no pueden asistir a

misa. (Tenemos una pequeña base de datos de los

feligreses hispanoparlantes, pero no para los feligreses de

habla inglesa). Sabemos que algunos feligreses están

confinados en casa temporalmente mientras que otros a

causa de su edad o enfermedad crónica lo están a largo

plazo. Nos gustaría mucho poder llegar a los enfermos y

asegurarnos que sean visitados y cuidados con regularidad

por alguien de la Ascensión. Nos gustaría ofrecerles los

sacramentos a ellos, pero a menudo, alguien que está solo

Pardon our appearance

This past week we started some much needed

construction on our sidewalk in front of the

rectory and our church. The work will take

about a month and a half to complete.

The Archdiocesan Adult Confirmation Program is de-signed for practicing adult (18+) Catholics seeking the sac-

rament of Confirmation, who have been baptized, have received their first Holy Communion, and have been edu-

cated in the Catholic faith through Catholic Schools or religious education programs. The Archdiocesan Adult Confirmation Program will present an overview of the essentials of the Catholic Faith, focusing on immediate

catechesis for the reception of the sacrament of Confirma-tion. This is a program of adult faith formation that com-bines presentations, group discussion, reflection and pray-er. The sessions will cover Sacred Scripture and Tradition,

the Creed, prayer and spirituality, the Church, Catholic social teaching and meaning of the sacrament of Confir-mation. + This Program is not for adults who are unbap-

tized, or baptized but uncatechized (not practicing Catho-lics); who would benefit from participation in their

parish’s RCIA process. Pastor’s permission is required to participate in this program.
