Victor DavidHometown: Joliet, Ill.

Catholic University is a great place to hone your skills as a leader, to make your ideas work. Take Victor David, for example. When he came to Catholic University as a freshman, he noticed something was missing. “Wedidn’t have a pep band.” Victor decided to do something about that. He founded one.

After researching the history of pep bands at CUA, “an on-again, off-again thing,” the honors program student, politics major, and Knights of Columbus member started asking people if they’d like to play music togetherto generate more school spirit around campus, especially at athletic events. He posted flyers and advertisedover different CUA media. “Sure enough,” he says, “they came — classics majors, politics, music, English, basically everything under the sun.” Thanks to Victor, the CUA Pep Band now plays at Orientation, footballand basketball games, Fall Fiesta — wherever they’re called upon to ramp up school spirit.

Kelly FerranteHometown: Howell, N.J.

Like most Catholic University students, senior Kelly Ferrante has found Washington, D.C., a great place in which to live and study. Whether she’s volunteering in a local school for DC Reads, trying out a restaurantwith a campus group, or just wandering around with friends, she always finds something new. “In D.C., there’ssomething for everyone,” she says.

“One of my favorite places to go is Chinatown. There’s the Verizon Center for concerts and sports. Greatrestaurants — something going on all the time. I also go downtown a lot. And to museums … and every-where by Metro. You can go anywhere on the Metro for jobs and internships and just doing fun things.”

As a member of Program Board, Kelly has introduced hundreds of CUA students to life in Washingtonthrough CUA Nights, off-campus trips into D.C., and other Washington-based activities. “It’s great tobring the University together with the city,” she says. “We have so much to do here, it’s foolish not to takeadvantage of it.”

Knowledge. Reflection. Active scholarship. Those are the hallmarks of a CUA edu-cation. You can delve deeply into your major interest while rooting your studies in theenduring liberal arts. You will be valued by your peers and professors.

Catholic University professors are teachers as well as learners themselves. They researchcompelling issues in their fields, connecting knowledge of the past to the promise ofthe future.

Our notable academic leadership has produced dozens of Fulbright, Guggenheim,Wilson, Mellon, and Oxford scholars. Yet, CUA stands out among research universitiesbecause undergraduate studies are a vital part of our faculty’s interests. Four of everyfive CUA professors teach at the undergraduate level.

Catholic University offers all of the benefits of a major research university within a nurturing educational community.

Christina WolfgramHometown: Gaithersburg, Md.

No matter what your major, at CUA you’ll take courses across the liberal arts and sciences. That, says ChristinaWolfgram, is a very good thing. “When I came to CUA, I knew I was going to be an English major but I didn’tknow a thing about philosophy. Then I took one of the required courses. I was hooked. I really liked learningabout Plato and Aristotle not only because they are the base of philosophy, but also because they are the baseof so many things — and what they wrote is still applicable today.”

Christina didn’t stop with declaring a minor in philosophy: She worked hard to achieve her goal to qualify forthe University Honors Program by the end of her freshman year, which gave her the opportunity to attend asemester in the Oxford University Honors Program — “a life-changing experience,” she says. “What have Ilearned? If you put your mind to it, at CUA you can do it.”

Wherever you live on campus, your residence hall will become your home.

Most first-year students live in buildings that offer a traditional residence hall experience.Full-time undergraduates in the University Honors Program may live in the HonorsResidential Community, which integrates intellectual stimulation and social interactionin a living environment designed specifically for them — a close-knit community ofscholars living and learning together. Additional special interest residential communitiesunite academic and social interests, so meeting new friends with whom you share common ground is easy.

In addition, on-campus living helps you succeed in your classes. That’s one reason allfirst- and second-year undergraduate students are required to live on campus, unlessthey commute from home.

Life on campus is so much more than having

a convenient place to hang out between

classes. You become part of a community,

experience different lifestyles and cultures,

share ideas, beliefs, and attitudes.

Dwight JonesHometown: Maplewood, N.J.

When CUA’s football coach showed up at his house to discuss attending the University, high school seniorDwight Jones was impressed. And when the coaches were honest about the team, he knew he could trust them.“They didn’t make any excuses.” After a visit to campus, he says, “I felt very much at home.” As a freshmanDwight turned to his coaches and his professors to help him balance the demands of football and academics.“If you don’t get the grades at CUA, you don’t play football. But my coaches helped me get on track.”

He stayed on track so well that he balanced classes, hip-hop dancing, and membership in the Black StudentAlliance with a rigorous football schedule. He became CUA’s fourth leading tackler with 55 stops, was electedteam captain, and, after breaking his foot in a tackle during his last year of play, continued to show leadershipand support from the sidelines. “At CUA,” Dwight says, “I learned to keep my head up, keep going, and maketime to do all the things I love.”

Internships. Everybody wants one. CUA students have access to thousands in business, nonprofits, and government. But how do you get the internship that’s right for you? Start by considering what you want out of the experience, says politics major Aaron Smith. “I knew I didn’t just want to sit at a desk from 9 to 5. Iset out to gain experience with the Web and media production over the last year. That’s what I offered to help with in Congressman Burton’s office.” Aaron begins an internship at his congressman’s D.C. officethis fall.

Equally important, he says, is persistence, “I went to my congressman, my two senators, and looked at otherpeople who shared my views. Ultimately, what it took to get an interview was persistence.”

And after the interview? “Don’t forget,” says Aaron, “always send a thank-you note.”

Andrew LauxHometown: Newtown, Pa.

Andrew Laux spent the spring semester of his junior year studying and immersed in Rome. He and 19 otherarchitecture students sketched the ancient buildings, toured the city (as well as Istanbul), and negotiatedday-to-day Italian life. “It’s one thing to vacation abroad, but when you live in a culture for four months, youhave to learn where to go for groceries, where to go to the bank, where to eat.”

As a freshman, Andrew says, “I thought there was no way I would ever go abroad. But as I continued througharchitecture school, I decided to go to Rome. It’s one of the best decisions I ever made. I felt like I learnedmore this semester than I had in my whole freshman and sophomore years,” he says.

“You look at a building in a book but when you actually see it — the Pantheon! — move around in it, sketch itin person … it’s completely different, a totally different feel … a totally different experience.”

School of Philosophy

“All knowledge begins with wonder,”

according to Aristotle, and that’s how

we approach studies in the School

of Philosophy. We take an historical

approach to contemporary and age-

old questions fundamental to human

life: What is the human good? What

are the ultimate principles of being

and knowledge? Delving into these

topics gives our students the critical

thinking skills to analyze and articulate

ideas while also developing a unique

perspective on their own lives.

THE PROGRAM• The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, offered through the School

of Arts and Sciences or the School of Philosophy, emphasizes theenduring questions of human nature and knowledge of God.

• The Bachelor of Philosophy, Ph.B., is an undergraduate degreeconferred by the Catholic Church. This degree, often chosen bythose pursuing careers in the Church, also serves the purposeof the civil degree, the B.A. The Ph.B. is an option for studentsgraduating in the School of Philosophy.

• A pre-law concentration, emphasizing logic, morality, andhuman action, is available for students interested in preparingfor a career in law or related fields.

THE CUA ADVANTAGECatholic University is among only a handful of institutions in thecountry to have a separate school of philosophy. In our case, thisreflects the role of philosophy in the Catholic intellectual tradition.Philosophy is the place where natural reason pursues the full andcomplete truth about the world. Starting with classical philosophy, exemplified in the works of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas, the faculty of the school bring ancient and medieval philosophyinto dialogue with modernity.

Pre-Professional Studies

Professional schools do not have a

prescribed undergraduate major for

students seeking admission to their

programs. Your major should reflect

your skills, interests, and the subjects

you are passionate about. At Catholic

University, students work closely with

the academic adviser of their selected

major and the pre-professional ad-

viser. Advisement ensures that you

are carefully guided through course

selection and the subsequent appli-

cation and interview process for the

various professional schools. Advisers

also work with students to secure

opportunities for experiences related

to the profession.

PRE-DENTAL PROGRAMStudents considering a career in dentistry benefit from CUA’sstrong liberal arts foundation with specialized courses in the sciences. Through personal attention from a pre-dental adviser andan academic adviser, you’ll choose courses that are appropriateprerequisites for dental school.

PRE-LAW PROGRAMThe Catholic University of America agrees with the American BarAssociation that the best preparation for law school is a varied, academically challenging liberal arts education. As a pre-law student at CUA, youare encouraged to pursue a major in which you have a strong interest and that will provide you a broad educational foundation.

PRE-MEDICAL PROGRAMAdmission into medical school is competitive and requires plan-ning, determination, and aptitude. CUA’s pre-medicine programis the right place to begin working towards that goal. Our pro-gram offers students a solid educational foundation, personal academic advising, and sound preparation for the Medical CollegeAdmissions Test as well as the rigors of medical school.

PRE-VETERINARY PROGRAMThe goal of professional veterinary education is to prepare futureveterinarians who are both competent and committed to usingtheir scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society. A broad background in several disciplines, including English, philosophy, and biology, provides the foundation for these prac-titioners. Students work closely with the pre-veterinary adviserto select appropriate courses based on their interests.
