Parish/Family Game Night Do you want to get out of the house for some fun, but
can’t find a babysitter? Maybe you just have cabin
fever? Come to the St. Alphonsus Gym for soup,
games and a movie for the kids - after the 4pm Mass
on Saturday, 2 February. You don’t need to bring any-
thing (unless you have a favorite game). Tables will be
set-up for the dinner and games – kids can just play or
pull up a blanket or chair to watch the movie. All ages
are welcome and the cost is FREE. Please call Rita
Wacker at 563-284-3060, if you have any questions.
Renewal Day for Adults with Disabilities
Feb 23rd from 9-3:30 pm our Lady of Victory is
hosting a day of spiritual renewal at the Parish
Center. There will be prayer, songs and crafts
for Adults with Disabilities and their family,
friends and caregivers. Please call 563-210-
3470 to register or volunteer.
The March for Life
Every year around January 22nd, groups of people from
all over the country gather in the nation’s capital to
raise awareness about life issues and promote prayer to
end abortion. I have attended the march several times
and always found it to be peaceful, prayerful, and
(usually) cold.
While this is often considered an uncomfortable or
controversial topic, the good news is that abortions
have been on the decline for some time. According to
the Center for Disease Control (CDC), “Compared with
2014, the total number, rate, and ratio of reported
abortions for 2015 decreased 2%. Additionally, from
2006 to 2015, the number, rate, and ratio of reported
abortions decreased 24%, 26%, and 19%, respectively.
In 2015, all three measures reached their lowest level
for the entire period of analysis (2006—2015).” You can
find many scholarly articles online about the incidence
and prevalence of abortion, but few of them explore the
moral ramifications of this issue.
The Catholic Church teaches that all life is sacred, and
this is based on what we call natural law principles.
What this means is that even if we didn’t have a bible or
a catechism, certain principles would still be self-
evident. Teachings such as “life is precious,” “the sky is
blue,” “man + woman = baby,” and “freedom is better
than slavery” are true no matter what your creed, race,
or political affiliation. No matter what laws are passed
by human legislatures, we are still bound by these
principles. For this reason, the Catholic Church will
always teach that innocent life, especially that in the
womb, deserves protection and care. Laws that take
care of mom and baby will do more to move our society
forward than favoring one over the other.

Mardi Gras– St Peters
It is not too soon to be thinking about Mardi
Gras...Tuesday March 5...the plan is to create a
'carnival' atmosphere. We are looking for the following:
a cotton candy machine, a popcorn machine, jugglers,
balloon animal makers, clowns, as well as a variety of
game 'booths'. We'd also like to have a few small
floats for a parade so if you help in any way or have
suggestions please call Bev Heintz 563.505.4772

A Little St. Alphonsus History
The streets around St. Alphonsus were plotted
about 1902 and the streets were named at that
time. Boies Ave. was named after Horace Boies,
the 14th Governor of Iowa from 1890-1894. He
was the only democratic governor from 1855-
1933. He was succeeded by Frank D. Jackson of
which Jackson Ave. is named. McKinley Ave. is
named after President McKinley who served from
1897-1901. He also was a leader in the Spanish
American War. Another Spanish American War
hero was the inspiration for Hobson St. and finally
Admiral Farragut for Farragut St. He is
remembered as the man who said, “Damn the
torpedoes, full speed ahead.”
