A Message from the Board Chair

and the CEO

Dear Friends of the Hearing Speech + Deaf Center,

2018 was a year of challenge for our

agency, reflecting overall trends in the

non-profit world. Compared to the prior

year, HSDC experienced reduced funding

from foundations and United Way.

Foundations have informed us that the

number of applicants for their grants has

increased significantly.

On a positive note, significant growth in HSDC’s audiology services and the

accompanying increase in service revenues partially offset reduced grant

funding. Fortunately, the trend of increasing service revenue continues in

2019 with very significant growth in all fields of service. However, grants and

contributions remain a critical revenue stream for our agency, and we very

much appreciate your ongoing support.

The leadership team, as well as the Board of Directors, continue to strive to

market our organization and build brand awareness. In 2018, HSDC received

the Nonprofit Design Blitz Award from the prestigious local marketing firm,

LPK. Through this award, LPK helped HSDC design a new logo and tagline

that will be used in a rebranding effort in 2019. We recently implemented

our new logo which you can see in this report.

With our growing services in audiology, speech and occupational therapy,

and community services for the D/deaf, HSDC is assisting more members of

the community. For 94 years, we have been dedicated to fulfilling our

mission of strengthening our community through advocacy and by

supporting individuals and families to overcome obstacles to communication.

Thank you for the steadfast support from each of you – volunteers, advisors,

board members, donors, community members, and of course, our dedicated

staff. With your continued support, we look forward to 2025 when we

will reach 100 years of care and advocacy to individuals and families in

Greater Cincinnati.

Very sincerely,

Mission

The Hearing Speech + Deaf Center strengthens

our community through advocacy and by supporting

individuals and families to overcome obstacles

to communicate

Vision

As the premier community resource with a reputation

for excellence, the Hearing Speech + Deaf Center

believes that communication is the foundation of all

human interactions.

Values

We support an individual’s choice of communication mode.

We endeavor to provide individuals and their families with the highest quality comprehensive services without

regard to their demonstrated ability to pay.

We embrace diversity and recruit staff and leadership volunteers who reflect those we serve.

We conduct ourselves with integrity, a high degree of professionalism, and business ethics

beyond reproach.

Building Community Through Communication

Audiology - Through an evaluation

and consultation process, our

audiologists diagnose and treat

hearing loss. HSDC works with

all major hearing aid manufacturers

to find the best match for an

individual’s needs, lifestyle,

and budget.

Speech-Language and

Occupational Therapy - HSDC’s

speech-language pathologists use

evaluations and therapy strategies

to improve speech and language

disorders and maximize their

patients’ communication abilities.

The occupational therapists

evaluate and treat deficits or

delays in the areas of gross

motor skills, fine motor skills

and sensory integration.

Community Services for the Deaf -

We offer American Sign Language

interpreting and C-Print©

captioning for individuals or

businesses who have clients,

patients, or students who are

D/deaf. We also offer advocacy

and monthly social events to the

D/deaf community.

HSDC’s Community Services for the Deaf extended the successes of its programming in 2018 with advocacy,

education, Pre-Employment Transition Services, and Community Employment Services for individuals, plus

public activities necessary for a vibrant D/deaf community. These services are funded by Opportunities for

Ohioans with Disabilities, foundations, and contributions. American Sign Language interpreting and C-Print©

captioning is offered to businesses and individuals, as well. HSDC has experienced staff interpreters in addition

to freelance interpreters who provided more than 10,000 hours of interpreting services in 2018.

Advocating Services

Community Services for the Deaf

In 2018, HSDC’s Clinical Services Department expanded services to meet the needs of the community by

partnering with Positive Leaps in West Chester. Positive Leaps is a specialized day treatment center for

children with significant behavioral concerns. HSDC provides speech therapy to children with articulation and/

or language delays who are enrolled at Positive Leaps. This treatment occurs at the Positive Leaps facility so

the children’s mental health counselor is available to work collaboratively with our speech-language

pathologist. The speech-language pathologists have continued to work in the Connections for Life program,

partnering with Central Clinic,in a unique co-treatment situation for young children. They have also continued

to provide services at the Schiff-Oyler Cincinnati Early Learning Center, providing place based early

intervention speech services prior to entry into kindergarten.

The growth of audiology services continues at all three locations through the remarkable efforts of our

audiologists who exceeded even the most optimistic productivity forecasts. Nearly 1000 hearing aids were fit

in 2018 with approximately 72% going to patients living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.

The Charitable Services Program was also revamped and rebranded as

CenterCares in 2018. CenterCares now delivers audiology, speech and

occupational therapy services on a sliding scale to individuals and families

who qualify for these services. By adding more structure to the program,

HSDC can better demonstrate the magnitude of our community’s needs in

requesting grants from philanthropic foundations.
