Model RFC43 (SIN RA0612)Model RFC49 (SIN RA0616)Flat ConcealedResidential Sprinklers
A Concealed ResidentialSprinkler engineered for aminimum design densityof 0.05 gpm/ft2 with low GPMrequirements.
Features1. Very low water flow requirements.
2. ½ (13mm) Total adjustment.
3. Thread-On/Thread-Off orPush-On/Thread Offcover attachment option.
4. Smooth aesthetic ceiling profile.
5. Available in brass, chrome andblack plated or painted finishes.
Product DescriptionModel RFC43 and RFC49 Concealed Residential Sprinklers
are fast response residential fusible solder link automaticsprinklers. Residential sprinklers differ from standardsprinklers primarily in their response time and waterdistribution patterns.
Model RFC43 and RFC49 sprinklers discharge water in ahemispherical pattern below the sprinkler deflector.Residential distribution patterns are higher and generallycontain a finer droplet size than standard sprinkler patterns.
The combination of speed of operation and high dischargepattern required for residential sprinklers has demonstrated,in fire testing, an ability for controlling residential fires, andthereby providing significant evacuation time for occupants.
The RFC43 and RFC49 Sprinklers provide the best form offire protection by combining an attractive appearance and½ (13mm) of cover adjustment for ease of installation. Thesmall diameter cover plate is easily and positively attachedand blends into the ceiling, concealing the most dependablefire protection available, an automatic sprinkler system.
The RFC43 and RFC49 are UL Listed Residential Sprinklersto be installed in the residential portions of any occupancy inaccordance with NFPA 13, 13R, & 13D.
The RFC43 and RFC49 can reduce the need for precisecutting of drop nipples. The threaded cover plate assemblycan be adjusted without tools to fit accurately against theceiling. The fire protection system need not be shut down toadjust or remove the cover plate assembly.
Application and InstallationThe RFC43 and RFC49, for residential installations, use a
165F (74C) fusible solder link in a tuning fork style sprinklerframe with a drop-down deflector. This assembly is recessedinto the ceiling and concealed by a flat cover plate. The coverplate is attached to the skirt, using 135F (57C) ordinarytemperature classification solder. When the ceilingtemperature rises, the solder holding the cover plate releasesthe cover allowing the deflector to drop into position and

exposing the sprinkler inside to ceiling temperature. Thesubsequent operation of the solder link opens the waterwayand causes the deflector to drop into position to distribute thedischarging water in a hemispherical pattern below thesprinkler deflector. Any adjustment of thread engagementbetween the cover plate and cup will assure that thedrop-down deflector is properly located below the ceiling. The residential distribution pattern contains a finer droplet sizethan a standard sprinkler, and the pattern producessignificantly higher wall wetting.
After a 2 5/8 inch diameter hole is cut in the ceiling, thesprinkler is to be installed with the Model FC Wrench. Wheninstalling a sprinkler, the wrench is first positioned into thesprinkler/cup assembly and around the hexagonal body ofthe sprinkler frame. The Wrench must bottom out against thecup in order to ensure proper, safe installation. The sprinkleris then tightened into the pipe fitting. When inserting orremoving the wrench from the sprinkler/cup assembly, care
should be taken to prevent damage to the sprinkler. DO NOTWRENCH ON ANY OTHER PART OF THE SPRINKLER/CUPASSEMBLY. MODEL RFC43 AND RFC49 CONCEALEDSPRINKLERS MUST BE INSTALLED ONLY WITH 135°FRATED COVERS.
Cover assemblies provide up to 12 (13mm) of
adjustment. Turn the cover clockwise until the flange is incontact with the ceiling. For the push-on/thread-off option, the cover assembly is pushed onto the cup and finaladjustment is made by turning the cover clockwise until theskirt flange makes full contact with the ceiling. Coverremoval requires turning in the counter-clockwise direction.
In ceilings that have a plenum space above the sprinkler, the plenum space may have neutral or negativepressurization but must not be positively pressurized. Inspectall sprinklers after installation to ensure that the gap betweenthe cover plate and ceiling and the 4 slots in the cup are allopen and free from any air flow impediment.

PatentsUS Patent No. 6,516,893 applies to theModel F1 Res 49 & 58 Pendent Sprinklers
The low flow F1 Res sprinklers are speciallyengineered for fast thermal response to meet thesensitive fire protection application needs of the latestresidential market standards (UL 1626 Standard). Uponfire conditions, rising heat causes a sprinkler’sheat-sensitive glass-bulb to shatter, releasing thewaterway for water flow onto the deflector, evenlydistributing the discharged water to control a fire.

General InformationRECOMMENDATIONS FOR INSTALLERS AND USERS:Plastic piping systems should be ENGINEERED, INSTALLED and OPERATED in accordance with ESTABLISHED DESIGN AND ENGINEERING STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES for plastic piping systems. Suitability for the intended service application should be determined by the installer and/or user prior to installation of a plastic piping system. All Installation and maintenance personnel should be trained in the proper handling and installation requirements and precautions of plastic piping systems. PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY, all piping system components should be inspected for damage or irregularities. Mating components should be checked to assure that tolerances and engagements are compatible. Do not use any components that appear irregular or do not fit properly. Contact the appropriate manufacturer of the component product in question to determine usability. Consult all applicable codes and regulations for compliance prior to installation.
Installation must be made in accordance with Spears® Manufacturing CompanyFlameGuard™ CPVC Fire Sprinkler Piping Products Installation Instructions - FG-3
NOTE — Individual or group instruction in correct solvent welding procedures is available by contacting your local distributor or your servicing Spears® Regional Distribution Center.SOLVENT CEMENT CONNECTIONS — Spears® Manufacturing Company recommends the use of Spears® Two Step FS-1 primer with FS-3 solvent cement OR Spears® FS-5 One Step solvent cement for joining Spears® products. Use of solvent cementing products not approved for CPVC fire sprinkler systems, or failure to follow installation instructions will automatically void the warranty.THREADED CONNECTION — Spears® Manufacturing Company recommends the use of Spears® BLUE 75™ Thread Sealant. This product has been tested by Spears® and the sealant manufacturer for compatibility with the Spears® CPVC fire sprinkler products. Consult the sprinkler head manufacturer before using this product. WARNING: OTHER PIPE JOINT COMPOUNDS OR PASTES MAY CONTAIN SUBSTANCES THAT COULD CAUSE STRESS CRACKING IN THE CPVC OR OTHER FITTING COMPONENTS. Care must be taken to avoid over torquing - generally 1 to 2 turns beyond finger tight is all that is required to make up a threaded connection. Factory testing has indicated 10-25 ft. lbs. of torque is adequate to obtain a leak free seal.GASKET SEALED THREAD CONNECTIONS — This type of connection can only be made with Spears® TorqueSafe™ style Gasket Sealed Female Sprinkler Adapters. DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF THREAD SEALANT WHEN INSTALLING THIS TYPE OF ADAPTER. Tape or paste may impair proper sealing and function. Testing has shown that hand tight until snug is all that is needed to seal this special connection.

DescriptionThe bronze swing check valvefeatures a full floating clapperassembly that provides for apositive seal each time thevalve is cycled. This featureimproves the swing checkvalves ability to "clear" anydebris that may be present inthe water supply. The re-cessed access cap designeliminates unnessessarymaterial, keeping the overallcost of the valve low. The seatmaterial is NBR which pro-vides for a positive seal evenunder light residual pres-sures. Note: This valve is notintended to be user service-able. The recessed cap doesnot provide access to anysevicable components.
InstallationThe female by female swingcheck valve should be in-stalled in accordance withcommonly used installationpractices for the fire sprinklerindustry. Proper seal of thethreads can be accomplishedby applying a liberal amountof PTFE based thread seal-ant such as PipeFit ThreadSealant Paste or PTFE Tape.Make sure to tighten the valveno more than 1-2 revolutionspast initial thread contact ofthe male and female threads.
Refer to service instruc-tions on page 2 for clap-per/seat replacement.
WARNINGDO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.Over tightening maycaused the valve body tocrack and leak.

Swing CheckValve,Full FloatingClapper Assembly
Service Instructions for swing check valve with full floating clapper assembly
The swing check valve has been designed with a serviceable clapper assembly that can be serviced with thevalve left in place. Service would only be required in the event of seat failure or an obstruction caused by theintroduction of foreign material in the water way.
To service the FPPI Swing Check Valve with Full Clapper Assemply, shut off the water supply at its' source.Drain water from the system. As a safety precaution, it is recommended that the control valve for the watersupply be marked so as to notify all personnell that the system is being serviced and that the water has beenshut-off until repairs have been completed.
Once the system is drained, it is safe to remove the access cap from the swing check valve with an adjustablewrench. Use appropriate care when removing the cap as to not cause damage to the access cap or the valvebody.Once the cap has been removed the clapper assembly will be in plain view. Simply lift the clapperassemply from is resting place. Before installing the replacement clapper assembly, visually inspect themachined seat surface of the valve to make sure that is clean and free of any foreign materials and that thewater ways at each end of the valve are clear of obstruction. To install the replacement clapper assembly, reinsert the new assembly in the same fashion that the origianal was removed. Make sure the replacementclapper assembly is properly seated and swings freely. Replace access cap. Tighten the access cap until fullyseated. It is recommended that a small amount of thread sealant such as PipeFit Thread Sealant with PTFE isused on the threads of the access cap. To assure future serviceability do not use anaoerbic or hardening threadsealants.
Visually inspect the area to make sure that all removed parts can be accounted for and the access cap hasbeen reinstalled correctly. The system can now be placed back into service by opening the valve that controlsthe flow of water to the system.
After the system has been pressurized, visually reinspect the check valve to make sure there are no apparentleaks. Notify appropriate personnel that the system is back in service.
