2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus in Culture and Arts

Ms. Boots Anson Roa is an actress, host, columnist, editor and lecntrer. She began acting in 1968, appearing opposite actors like Joseph Estrada. the late Fernando Poe, Jr. and Ramon Revilla Sr. She served as Governor of the Philippine Red Cross; Marketing Director of the Association of Philippine Physicians in America and Mass Communications Professor at UP, Ateneo de Manila and the De la Salle. Her work in government includes serving as Press Attache and Cultural Officer of the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC and Commissioner of the Commission on Population.She has received numerous accolades including the 'Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation's Service

(TOWNS) Award'' in 1974, the UP AA Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2000, the Lifetime Achievement award by F AMAS in 2003 and Stars Award in 200 I. She is the Vice-Chairman for Television, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas, Metro Manila Chapter, and the Chairman, Friends of Philippine High School for the Ans (PHSA).She is the president of the Movie Workers Welfare Foundation (Mowelfund). an organization in the Philippines that provides for the welfare of workers in the film industry. IL provides financial suppon for hospitalization, surgery, medical fees, death benefits, and helps with housing and employment. It holds Intensive Filmmaking Workshops twice a year. These have helped many aspiring young Filipino filmmakers. She earned her A.B. �peech and Drama from UP in 1964. She took journalism, public and media relations courses at Georgetown University, Washington D.C. in 1983-1984 and television production at Media General Cable Network in Virginia in 1993.

Marilyn Aldeguer Resurreccion, M.D. 2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus in Anesthesiology

Dr. Marilyn Aldeguer Resurreccion is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology and Director of Anesthesiology at State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and graduated from UP College of Medicine in 1963. She has published many research anicles on basic and clinical anesthesia research including pediatric anesthesia and pain management. She was the first woman, first Asian, and foreign medical graduate to be elected and served as President of the SUNY-DMC Medical Board in 1996-1998. She served a two-term Presidency of the New York Society

of Anesthesiologist (NYSSA), District I. She rose through the ranks to become Speaker of the House of Delegates of NYSSA, the first woman and Asian to hold this position. She is the first Asian elected to represent New York in the American Society of Anesthesiologists House of Delegates. She was President of American College of lntcrnational Physicians NY -NJ Chapter, l 988-1990; President of the Philippine Medical Association in America, l 991-1992; Chair of the UPMASA CME activities, 1991 and Chair of the Medical Mission Committee, 2003-2007. She participated in the annual Medical-Surgical Mission to the Philippines of the PMAA and the APPA. She has received numerous accolades including the Distinguished International Physician Award (1987) from the ACIP (NY-NJ Chapter); Lifetime Achievement Award in Medicine (2006) from the PMAA; Most Distinguished Alumna of UPCM, 1996; Kings County Hospital Center Outstanding Physician Award, 1999; and SUNY-DMC Outstanding Teacher of the Year, 2002 and 2006-2007.

Erlinda Rojas Santos, EdD

2013 UP AAA Distinguished Alumnus for Community Leadership

Dr. Erlinda Rojas Santos is a pharmacist and educator (retired). After graduating from the UP College of Pharmacy, she has been active not only as a pharmacist, but also as a community leader in her province in the Philippines and in the U.S. She was elected as National Secretary of UPAAA, 2011-2013. She was the UPAAA Liaison Officer for Midwest and the West. She is the founding president and current acting president of the UPAA Colorado Chapter. The chapter conducted fundraising events to support projects at UP including donating books to UP libraries. With a handful of UP alumni including_her late father Dr. Teofilo

R. Rojas, Sr., she organized the UPAA Cotabato Chapter and served as its founding treasurer. She servedas PRO for external matters, as Director of the Executive Board of Directors and as Overall Chainnan ofthe 198 l general reunion of the UP Pharmacy Alumni Association in the Philippines. In 2011, she workedwith a team for the publication of the latest edition of the UPPhAA Alumnj Directory distributed at theLi-PCP Centennial Ball. She is the founding member of the UP Pharmacy Alumni Association in America.She was active in fundraising for the renovation of the UPCP Valenzuela Hall. She is currently the StateChair of theNational Federation of Filipino-American Associations Region V. She was Chair of theCommittee on Labor and Professional Affairs and the immediate past regional Vice Chair. She is activewith Philippine American Society of Colorado which promotes cultural, religious and educationalactivities.

Luis Maria R. Calingo, PhD 2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus in Education and lnternational Development

Dr. Calingo is the President of Woodbury University, the second American university president of Filipino ancestry. He became the first Filipino dean of an accredited bu5.iness school in the U.S. in 1992. Under his leadership, CSU Long Beach created the Ukleja Center for Ethical Leadership, and the business school became the eighth largest in the U.S. His expertise in strategic planning and quality management has been recognized nationally through his annual appointment since 1997 to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awardand internationally through his work since 1995 as Technical Expert on National Quality and Business Excellence

Awards of the Asian Productivity Organization (APO). As APO technical expert since 1995, he has assisted the governments oflndonesia, Mongolia, Pakjstan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam in the establishment of their national awards for quality and business excellence. He is a prolific author and wrote the first international textbook in Asian business strategy in 1997. He received numerous awards including: the 2008 UP Distinguished Alumnus Award in Industrial Engineering; "Portraits of Asian-American Success" Community Leadership Award, NBC affiliate KSEE-24 Fresno and Companies That Care, 2003; and Lifetime member of international honor societies: Beta Gamma Sigma (business administration), Pi Gamma Mu (social science), and Phi Beta Delta (international scholars). He earned his S.S. in Industrial Engineering in 1976 and his Master of Urban and Regional Planning in 1978 from UP; his MBA in 1981 and PhD in 1984 from University of Pittsburgh.

Xenia Tiglao Tigno, PhD

2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus in Health Science Administration

Dr. Xenia T. Tigno is a Health Scientist Administrator in the National Heart, Lung

and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. She was a

Program Officer at the National Institute of Nursing Research al NIH. Prior to

joining the NIH, Dr. Tigno was an Associate Professor at the Department of

Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, University of South Florida College of

Medicine. She was Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology, UP

College of Medicine. During her 26 year tenure as a faculty member of the UPCM, she garnered several

teaching and research awards, including the Metrobank Most Outstanding Teacher Award in 1996, and

the 200 I Model Filipino Award for Teaching Excellence from the Philippine Broadcasting Service. She

was cited in the '·Women in Philippine Health Science'· in 2002 by the National Academy of Science and

Technology and received several awards for Most Outstanding Teacher in the Basic Sciences ( 1996,

1997, 1998), and Professorial Chair in Physiology and Cell Physiology from 1985-200 I at UPCM. She

published the first textbook in Physiology written in the Philippines which is still in use in medical

schools in the Philippines. Dr. Tigno earned her BS Physics and Math in 1972 and her Master's degrees

in Physiology (1975) and Epidemiology ( 1999) from UP. She obtained a Doctor of Natural Science

degree in 1984 from the University of Wurzburg in Germany.

Emmanuel C. Besa, M.D. 2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus in Medical Oncology

Dr. Emmanuel C. Besa is a Professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology, in the Department of Medical Oncology, Kimmel Cancer Center, Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, PA. He has made very significant contributions in medical oncology research in following 4 areas: Myelodysplastic syndromes using chromosome markers as prognosis of survival, clinical trials to the now approved therapy using revlimid and azacytidine; Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CLL) use of intravenous immunoglobulins in prevention of infections and in autoimmune cytopenias; Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) designed

new chemotherapy combination Topptecan and FLAG; Use of androgens in anemia and bone marrow failure. He is the Principal Investigator of many research grants and serves as reviewer of NlH grants applications. He has published 70 scientific articles and 30 book chapters on medical oncology and hematology. He is the Managing Editor and Hematology Editor for eMedicine: Medicine and Surgery, an on-line medical reference. He is the Associate Editor of Internet Journal of Hematology. He is a member of the editorial boards and peer reviewer of the following 8 scientific and medical journals. Dr. Besa has received several professional awards including the UPMAS Outstanding Educator Overseas in 1992 and the UPMASA Distinguished Alumnus in Medical Research in 2012. He earned his MD degree from U.P. in 1967.

2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus in Infectious Disease Research

Dr. Milagros Reyes is a Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Ml.She was Chief of Infectious Diseases, 1981 - l 985,and Chief of the Department of Medicine, Hutzel Hospital, 1997- 2002. She is the author of numerous scientific articles and book chapters on infectious diseases.She is the principal investigator of many research grants and clinical trials on infectious diseases.Her major research focus is on viral-induced heart

muscle disease and the diagnosis and treatment of Pseudomonas endocarditis.She collaborated in research on HAART therapy regimens for AIDS patients in the Philippines.She has served as peer reviewer of various scientific journals including Clinical Infectious Diseases, and Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice. She was elected in 2012 as a member of the Editorial Board of Anti-Jnflammat01y and Anti- Allergic Agents.She organized and participated in several medical missions to the Philippines.She served in leadership positions in various organizations including: President of UPAA Michigan, 1989- 1991; President, Philippine Medical Association of Michigan, 1993-1994; Board of Governors, UPMASA, 1998 - present; and is President, UPMASA Michigan Chapter, 2013-2015. She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. She received numerous awards including the I 990 Outstanding Researcher Overseas from UP Medical Alumni Society, the Teaching Excellence A wardfrom Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1999 and 200 I .She earned her MD degree from UP in 1966.During her residency at PGH, she recognized and described the first clinical cases of Chikungunya virus infection in the Philippines in 1968.

SYMPOSIUM SPEAKER Rigoberto C. Advincula, PhD 2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus in Chemical Science

Dr. Rigoberto Advincula is a Professor of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is the President of the Philippine American Academy of Scientist and Engineers (PAASE) and a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS), Polymer Materials Science and Engineering (PMSE) Division and the Polymer Chemistry Division. He is the editor of three journals: Reactive and Functional Polymers (Elsevier), Macromolecular Research (Springer) and the Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers (Sage). He has 412 scientific publications and 11 patents. His research is focused on the design, synthesis, and characterization of polymers and

nanostrucrured materials capable of controlled-assembly, tethering, and self-organization in ultrathin films. This includes functional macromolecules, coordination polymerization, polymerization on surfaces, electropolymerization, and preparation of nanoparticles and hybrid materials. He is also involved in investigating nanoparticles, nanostrnctured surfaces, and nanocomposite materials for sensor and bioapplications. He has received numerous awards including the 20 IO Excellence in Science and Technology Award, Philippine Dev-USA Foundation, 2010 Koh Science Award, Philippine-American Academy of Scientists and Engineers, 2009 Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award, University of Houston, 2009 Balik Scientist Awardee, Dept. of Science and Technology Philippines, 2008 Engineering Research and Development Technology Fellow, Philippines, 2007 Technical Focus Lecturer Award, American Coatings Association (FSCT), 2007 Research Excellence and Scholarship Award, University of Houston, and the 2003 Arthur Doolittle Award, American Chemical Society, PMSE Division. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry in 1987 from UP and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1994 from University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.

Heidi Laxamana'Weiss, PhD 2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus in Biostatistics and Cancer Research

Dr. Heidi L. Weiss is a Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Biostatistics, and the Director, Biostatistics Shared Resource Facility, Markey Cancer Center at University of Kentuckyfrom August 2009 to the present. Prior to joining University of Kentucky, she was a Professor in the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemnology, Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at the University of Texas Medical Branch Cancer Center, and Professor in the Breast Center and Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Hlouston, TX. Her research includes: Biostatistical methods for the design and analysis of clinical trials focusing on cancer

chemoprevention and cancer gene therapy/immunotherapy; Bayesian monitoring and design of early phase clinical trials; prognostic studies of biomarkers using survival analysis; longitudinal analysis of tumor multiplicity and tumor growth in transgenic, xenograft, and chemically-induced animal cancer models. She has received several grants from NIH and has served as a reviewer in several NIH scientific review panels. She has published J 35 scientific papers and several book chapters. She earned her B.S. in Statistics in 1985 from U.P. Los Banos; her MS in Applied Statistics in 1989 from Louisiana State University; and her PhD in Biostatistics in 1993 from the University of South Carolina School of Public Health.

Laurel G. Yap, M.D. 2013 UPAAA Distinguished Alumnus inHealth Care Leadership

Dr. Larry Yap is the Director of Pediatrics and Neonatal Care Unit, MedStar

Harbor Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A., from 2003 to the present. He is an

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at University of Maryland, and an Instrnctor of

Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has demonstrated

outstanding leadership in healthcare management in his numerous professional

activities including serving as Co-Chair, Continuing Medical Education Review

Committee (CMERC), MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, 2010-�-

present; President-Elect, International Medical Graduates Section, MedChi, The Maryland State Medical

Society, 2012-present; Chair, MedStar Health Neonatal Quality Improvement Work Group, 2009-2010; Course

Director, 3-P Conference: A Potpourri of Practical Pediatrics, Harbor Hospital, Department of Pediatrics;
