Introducing the Symmetrix Management Console (cont.)

Works the same as the CLI/API – the same rules apply

Makes it easier to perform complex CLI tasks

Online help makes it easier for novice users that have little or no CLI or Symmetrix knowledge

 Role-based security to control access

Symmetrix Management Console – Server Details

Supports up to 6 Symmetrix DMX arrays – Number of volumes per array depends on Enginuity release– Will launch/discover 32K volumes in < 2 minutes

All functions process at Solutions Enabler speed– All data memory-resident– Shares the SYMAPI database with Solutions Enabler (SYMCLI)

SMC server memory usage– Average use is 384 MB of memory, maximum is 684 MB

CPU load is approximately 20% of a dual 2.2 GHz Xeon processor

Page 9: Symm.63

Symmetrix Management Console – Client Details

Client is browser-based (Internet Explorer or Firefox)– Uses an applet, automatically downloaded to browser– Java JRE plug-in 1_5_X or later– Uses <128 MB of memory on a client machine

Choice of HTTPS128-bit SSL security or standard HTTP

No software to install on client machine

 No dynamic ports

 Functions through most VPNs/firewalls

Installation of SMC V6.0

Requires Solutions Enabler V6.4 to be installed

 Requires the SMC license

Requires appropriate Solutions Enabler licenses– Local or remote– Features not licensed by customer are not available– SMC allows management of Solutions Enabler license keys

Local or remote connections– SAN connection– SYMAPI remote connection

Installation Information Required

 Install directory

 Initial Setup User

HTTP / HTTPS port numbers– Any available TCP port on host– Defaults are provided (but can be overridden)

Enable/Disable functions – Force all communication via HTTP– Force all communication via HTTPS (128-bit only)– Allow both

Page 12: Symm.63

Initial Setup Decisions

Users– Local accounts or active directory– Security admin / auditor– Who gets administrative rights vs. storage admin– Single account vs. multiple accounts

Enable alerts?– Other tools running at site– Avoid redundancies

Block access to a Symmetrix array

Lab 1 – Install Symmetrix Management Console

 Don’t blink …

 It’s fast !!

 We listened to you …

User Authentication

Local accounts – Defined in SMC

Active directory– Username/password authentication against the active directory– Administrator defines users to SMC

LDAP – Defined after installation– Administrator defines users to SMC

All authentication modes require a security role to be defined

Page 16: Symm.63

SMC Security Roles

Fixed security roles– ISU: Initial setup of system (bootstrap account) – Administrator: Full access– Storage Admin: Manage storage only– Security Admin: Manage security only– Auditor: Can only read security info– Monitor: Can view properties of Symmetrix arrays – None: No access to Symmetrix arrays

Designed to control access at the Symmetrix level

Lives within the confines of Symmetrix Access Control

Default for an account is no access

Page 17: Symm.63

Lab 2 – Setting up Symmetrix Management Console

Launch the client: SMC Favorite in Internet Explorer

Use username and password specified during install

Create a new user account (smd), password (smd)

Grant the smd account admin rights on one array, monitor on another

Open a new browser session and log in as smd

What’s different about the menu / right-click options on the Symmetrix arrays?

When completed, log out and exit browser

Lab 3 – Navigating in the SMC Client

Connect to the SMC client using the account SMC

What model Symmetrix arrays are we looking at?

How many physical disks are in each array?

 What size disks are installed?

How much free space is available on each array?

 How many HBAs are visible?

Are there any aliases on the HBAs?

What director types are there on each array?
