GENRE

For the genre of music video we choose ‘Pop’ This genre has the largest target audiencethe most mainstream genre of music.

SONG CHOICE

After choosing our genre we decided on the song – “my head is a jungle” by Emma LouiseOur interpretation of the song is about a relationship break down of two people that are still in love.

TYPE OF MUSIC VIDEONarrative and Performance -tells a story which links to the lyrics of the song through performance aspectsAfter analysing music videos and looking at the examiner’s report from last year we found that the favoured style of music video was through a narrative, grabbing the audience’s attention. By using 2 different styles of music video it increases the repeatability of our video which was our primary aim.

HOW ARE WE USING THESE STYLES?Narrative – telling a story of a broken relationship where two people are still in love.Performance – establishing the narrative through contemporary dance.

USE OF DANCEPerformance is established through Contemporary dance.Contemporary dance is used to interpret a song’s lyrics through the emotion of their movements. We used a range of different movements that reflect a relationship, such as jumps, lifts and hugs.

HOW DID WE ESTABLISH THE NARRATIVE THROUGH PERFORMANCE?We captured a range of different camera angles, such as close ups, long shots and tracking shots of the couple. The choice of which camera angle depended on the intensity and emotion we were trying convey in specific parts of the song.

ACTORS

To really visualise the relationship and meanings of the video/song we decided to use a girl and a boy actor, signifying a relationship.

PROPS

Another way we established a relationship was through the use of holi powders. At the start of the video we used pink powders on the female actor and red on the male actor (both colours work as a visual signifier of love and romance).

We also used red on the male, as it uses connotations of dominance over the female, however our video portrays this through the larger amount of footage shown of the women and our representation of feminism.Throughout the build-up of the song where we wanted to establish the breakdown of the relationship we used a range of different coloured colours on the actors. This acted as a visual signifier for the audience, establishing the breakdown and the ‘mess’ of their relationship. This also creating an illusion of ‘jungle’ in the artist head due to the relationship.

EDITINGTextual Schizophrenia – When creating our video we wanted to use a range of different effects through post production on final cut pro.

Instead of using a simple narrative we wanted to have a really authentic video which used different effects which empathised the obscure relationship.

LIP SYNCING

We wanted to conform to media texts and mainstream pop videos by using typical star image lip syncing scenes. We were inspired by artists such as Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus, using a close up head shot to establish the purity and beauty of the artist.
