Part 1: Course Description and Requirements
This course will examine leadership in four ways: 1) by studying the definitions and descriptions of leadership through
case studies and other readings; 2) by studying overviews of the study of leadership; 3) by student lectures on important
leadership topics; and 4) by self-assessments that will provide an understanding of the essential competencies leaders
need to be effective.
Course Requirements
The course requirements include class discussions of case materials; reviews of background reading on leadership topics;
lectures by the students on leadership topics; self-assessments of leadership characteristics; and one essay that covers
specific leadership topics.
Below is a more detailed description of each course requirement and the percentage of the grade assigned to each
activity.
Class discussion of cases and background material (30%). Each student will be expected to read, analyze and be
prepared to discuss the assigned case studies, reading material, and study questions. The major topics covered in the case
studies will be as follows: Characteristics, competencies and styles of leaders; ethics and leadership; leadership in a
crisis; leadership and change; leaders in different sectors; leadership differences based on situations and contingencies;
differences between leaders and managers; political and career leaders; leadership representing diversity; and the
challenges and opportunities of leaders in the future.
Lectures on leadership (30%). Each student will be expected to prepare and present a lecture and examination
questions on the theories of Leadership: The Great Man Theory; Trait Theory of Leadership; the Behavioral,
Contingency and Situational Theories of Leadership; the Transactional Theory of Leadership; Transformational Theory
of Leadership; two lectures on Leadership Styles; and a Summary covering theories.
Self Assessment of Leadership (10%) Students will take several assessments of their own leadership characteristics.
One class will be available for a students’ discussion of the self assessments that could cover: 1) the confirmation of
their assumptions about themselves; 2) their surprises/disappointments; 3) their plans to prepare further to become a
leader; or 4) their inclination to leave leadership roles to others and why.
One 2000 to 2500 word essay on leadership (30%). Each student will be expected to present one essay on the topic of
the Ethical Responsibilities of Leaders OR Leadership and Diversity. ESSAY DUE JULY 9, 2019.
