L./i. NEWS FK alleges that I collect receivers in the same way that some people col- lect stamps! Anyhow, my latest one in the row is a 'jr-tube 1968 Eddystone 840-A, covering 0.5-30 mHx, tobe used asan addition to my main rx, the Ham- marlund, which has neither MW (but LW from 100 kHz), nor 13 and 11 meters. Thus there is hardly room anylonger for both me and my receivers at my present QTH... Please note my new ad- dress on the front page.

When visiting Radio Andina, Richard Leggett was givena long blue pennant in celebration of its 10th anniver- sary; it was founded 30.10.61; also some 15 smaller red ones, also com- memorative, these to distribute to listeners. In view of the qu?ntity of these beautiful pennants shown to the left, Richard will send to any R. An- dina listener, but it will need to be a case of 'first come, first served'.

Well, we haven't much news this month, but let's get started: Chile. New is &Univ. TQcnica de1 Estado, with 1 kW...acc. to T-II.Ekblom.

Surinam. SPOTLIGHT on R. SRS, Paramaribo, by Barry Daviest Surinam or Dutch Guiana is located on the North-East coast of South America witha populationof some 350.000 peopleofwhich there are only abollt 6.ooo Europeans. The Ci tyof Paranaribo, having a Dutch colonial ap- pearance, is the homeof the Surinam Broadcasting Foundation, H. SRS.

They say patienceis an essential virtue foragood DX'er. Well, yollr OM waited I8 months for this station's QSL having logged the darn thing in 1969. Radio SRS operates on 725 k.Hz MW using the call sign PZX26. The US RCA transmitter pushes 50 kU through an omni-directionalantenna some 110 metresinhoight. Programmes arebroadcast in Dutch, E and Kndi. Your OM heard a Dutch pop show around 0245 hrs. Problem here though is the 250 kW commion 728 kHz. Still have a go this winter and then lookout for this station's informative QSL-folder sometime in 1973!

FK playing-s...

Having finished Part 1 of his diet, FK now is so slim that he has almost disappeared. I caught him hereinone df his usual embar- rassingsituations . ..TillDecenber. take good care of yourselves, and keep out of tempta- tion!

If you think WC hzve ended the TIPS now, you have to thirk it over once more. On next page you ‘11 find :i?Jre ~~J;~-TI!?~ i.~‘3~:. i:~-.:.:: friend Anders Dahllb'v in Hedemora, Sweden (IW of Stockholm). Don't think ttie re;?.stin is that we have received his TIPS to late! The TIPS were received in Copenhagen oli Cct. :ij~d.. Ko, the reason is that Anders has "inverted" a Ned,,: way to set up the I!W-TLFS, :z? thzr?1o:?i; I said to myself that it will be better Ato let all of you take 2 look on "the 5 nvention" . .ji:lt first o-f all we have some letters with commentnires on our NW-TIPS and espaci2.ilg their n.rrcngement.

C!F writes :"I ngrce with Bii izz l!i-: upon the arrangement of the I%!-TIPS. It is rnther con- fusing to divide the tips in so I!LW~ periods. Just 2zrange them after fq as we used to do".

FK has the followinff to sav:"I don't like the new system. ~ It is not useful. I'll propose an arrangement consisti'ng of twc: periods - day & night. Just as suggested by BD".

LA is also di~contcndcds"vou should cut very strongly in all those ti&ropenns medium stations which are ovcrrunni!lg the- clubpaper. Especisllgzr those hezzd in the middle of the dry, because they are of no usr to most of us" ,

At lest EK:"A terrible rrr?age=cnt for US poor "consumers". GO in for BDs suggestion with two periods: o600-1800 and lUoo-o600".

Ey dissatisfied "consumers", but before the MW-editor makes up his mind, please, let us t=ake a look on dnders' 'li;?t-ention'f, and let us once more hear from you!!!

And now it's up to all of you to tell us how to arrange the MW-TIPS in the future. Drop us a line and we are at your service! I

Here come some comments to last month issue: CF sends the Pollowing::'Period D - 4945: Not 11 Malaysia as suggested, but Springbok Radio

Period C - 7250: R Singapore - the tipseditor made a mistake. My details were: R Singapore, often, Malay pop-songs, Malay ann., some days spoil- ed by.Vatican R at 1615, best: 44434

RF in Bolland has written a long letter: "in the October-issue..no. lo of this year I reported in the XW-sectioh reception of Ra-

dio-station "Voz de Levante", Valencia on a frequency of 836 kilz at 0015 GM? on 12.9.1971. iThe editor of this section made the following remark concernin+g my logging:

"ACC. to rb'mi voz de Levante is broadcasting on 1570- Voz de Palencia is on 836. \$I?0 is right? ED."

With reference to this remark I inform you that also Voz de Levante is now broadcasting -.-_ on this 836 kEz frequency. During weekdays and Sundays this station bryidcastsfrom 0700 to 2joo hrs. GMT. On Saturdays they broadcast from 0700 to 0100 GMT. Reception-quality of this station, especially after midnight is very good.

A reception-report, I sent to Voz de Levante, giving details about the reception on 836 kHz was verified by a QSL-card and a nice pennant. I hope that the above information will be of interest. Sincerely yours, Henry Beters D " o

Of course, 1Ip, we are always glad to receive corrections, informations etc. because they make it possible for us to write a magazine with correct informations for the members.

EK has also a small remark on the station mentioned in the letter above: "According to 836 kHz at 0015~ LV de Levante has been on the frq. the last year at

least". EK continues: "sditor also find by 1100 kHz at 0200 hrs: ZDK not mentioned in WRH. Not correct!(and -- now follows a photo-copy from WRH showing Leeward Islands with Radio ZGK)".

f Dear Erik, you are an old-fashioned boy. Take a look in the 1971 issue of WRH. Can you find anything about ZDK? if so, I'll try to get another copy of my WRH. i!ow old is your M?Ii?

At last a letter from JPP, France: "3335 icl-:~ - 2345 hrs. - Unid. stn, hrd 19/g with Chinese music (already hrd from 2200 - -- ‘ 5 2330 with Chinese music, Chinese songs and Chinese talk - never with SC-called "Indo- i nesian" music. that firs-t of all, on behalf of the b 'ard, 0 we.want to say thank you very much to Lcnnart Ilanc in Sweden, who has to resign as editor of our monthly feature " New X tations, schedules, frequencies", due to increased work at his job. LH has been editor for this column for over four years - I believe - he has done his job very well. ?le can only express our sincere thanks, and we hope that he now and then will writs us, and contribute to our bulletin. On this account we are therefore seeking a now editor to these two pages. We can tell you, that it will take about 3-4 hours ovcry month, and that you have to do it free, due to the tightening economic in the club. Anyway, we do hope that one of our members write us, and offer a couple of hours of his sparetime in the month, to help the club. By the wa;?, what do c think about our new front page this month? As all of you surely have rccognized, this picture looks much better than that in the August issue. \Jhy, do you may ask. Well, that is because we this time used a negative film mado over the original picture? and then printed the front page via a metal printingplate. In !lugust we just used the original, and from this tre made the printingplate. Of course this method (with a negative film) is more cxpcnsive, and it is not sure, that we can continue with this in the future, due to the eco- nomic of our club as just written above. But nevertheless, we welcome all com- mentsrics about this front page, so that WC can know what our members like. I also ncod to say, that due to technical circumstances, we are not sblc to print the club news9 editors talks etc. on the front page this month. Your will thcro- fore find the "frontpage" story here on this place of the bulletin, this month. In this issue, we arc also happy to give you a big article about propacntion fo- recasts, written by the wellknown Carol Fcil. I'm sure that all of you will ap- prcciata this very intdrestilng article, and that you will have good use of it. Thank you CF for an enourmous job. In the ncx?; 3 $1 9 J it is our hope, Nagno in IJ.r;,A. 9

tha-t WC: can give you an article written' by Larry called "2xpcricncics with exact frequency measurements". An ar-

ticle fr:,m Peru, written by Richard Lcggett, England, will possible be printed next month 3s well. RL rcci:ntly nado a trip to this exciting LA-country, a.s you surely hnvo read about in formcr editions of SWN. So in the Christmastime we should <also bc able to gi\c you something interesting to read. * 7

by Carol Feil. One of the main problems to the DXer is to know, a to listen for the sta-

tions in the different parts of the world. Most DXers learn this by experience, and after some years of DXing they know when and where to search for the stations, they want to hear. This is not at all a bad way, but I think, that it would be a help, if you could theoretically predict possible reception times. For instance if you would like to get in a station, that you never heard before, say Cook Islands, then it would be nice to know when to listen for them, in order to have at least a chance.

I have for some time now ltstudiedll the possibility of making such calculations. It is not too difficult to calculate mean incident field intensities for a transmitter of known location, power and frequency on a given date and time and for a given year (i.e. a given sunspot number). However, if you want, that your results must be general useful, it is a rather difficult task, as there are so many variables. I have come,to the result, that the most important thing - that is, what I find most useful - is tb know, a the ionospheric absorption is small or nil. I have therefore calculated the periods, for which the absorption is below a certain value. This has been done for paths to all regions of the earth and for each month of the year.

I shall now briefly explain, how the calculations have been made, then I think, that it will be clear, what I mean. The calculations have been based on a procedure found in llIonospheric Radio Propagation", Circular 462 of the National Bureau of Standards, is- sued 1948. Newer and more sophisticated methods of calculation can be found in the litte- rature. However, they are much more time-consuming, and this one is bad enough! Abbreviations: IRP = Ionospheric Radio Propagation, the book just mentioned,

GC = Geographical coordinates.

Figure 1. First of all I have divided the earth in ll.4 zones of about equal size (i.e. on

a globe of course), and they have been numbered as you see it on fig. 1. The map drawn on this fig. is not very exact, but it gives you an idea of "where you are" in the different zones. If you are in doubt in which zone a particular town (stn) is situated, you should consult a more detailed map, from where you can get the GC of the town. It is then easy to decide to which zone it belongs, as fig. 1 clearly shows which degrees of latitude and longitude divide the zones. Table 1.

To make it easier for you, I have in this table listed to which zones the diffe- rent countries and their SW radiostation-towns belong. An underlined zone number means, that the main part of the country is situated in this zone. If there is not mentioned any station-towns for a country, that lies in more than one zone, this means, that all $i'J BC stations in this country is situated in the underlined zone.

For Brazil it has not been possible to list all the towns, but instead are listed the states and the abbreviations of these used in !JHTVH. That is, if you want to know, in which zone R Poti is situated, you see in WRTVH, that R Poti is situated in RN, and from table 1 you see, that RN = Rio Grande do Norte is situated in zone 65. . Figure 2.

Next I constructed a great circle map, showing the paths of a number of great circles through Denmark. To be more exact I have used as center the GC: 56 N, 10 E. Note, that on this fig. I have placed Denmark in each edge of the map, which offers the advan- tage, that you easily can see both the eastern and western path to all parts of the earth. The dotted lines show distances along the great circles in thousands of km.(The eatih is considered a sphere with a circumference of 40,000 km, which is approximately correct). If you would like to see, how a path to a specific point of the earth crosses the conti- nents and seas, you may proceed as follows: Place a transparent paper over fig. 2; mark the equator and the GC of Denmark and of the point, that you are interested in; draw the great circle path between these two points along the great circles of fig. 2; then place the transparent paper over fi

'i . 1, aligning the equator line and Denmark (which on this

fig. is approx. in the middle . Now you may see, how the radiowaves will run between these two points.

Some Pronagation Calculations - cont.

Table 2. According to 1% the absorption is given by the expression: Ad = JQEd. J is

a seasonal variaton factor, and Q is the variation with solar activity. These factors only vary very little compared to Kd, which accounts for the diurnal variation in connec- tion with the length of the path.

I have chosen to calculate the periods for which the value of Ed is below 1.0. This can be done as follows: First you construct the great circle path from Denmark to each zone (i.e. to the ttmidpointlt, the GC of which are given in the 2nd column of table 2) on a transparent paper, where you have marked also the equator and the GMT-meridian. In IF@ you find 12 maps, one for each month, showing a number of curves. Now, by placing the transparent paper on these maps and sliding it along the equator line, you can by means of the curves and an addition& nomogram, which takes into consideration the length of the path, determine the value of Kd for every hour of the'day (the GMT-meridian will show you the hour in GMT). Thus you can in this way determine the period, when Kd is below 1.0. These periods are listed in table 2.

The 3rd column gives you the approximate distance from Denmark to each zone in km. For zones situated more than l4,OOO km away, the path "the other way round" has been considered too. As these long paths normally are open only for a short time, only one time indication has been given (except for zone 105>, around which absorption is smallest. This also counts for anywhere else in the table, where only one hour is given. When two hours are given, separated by a comma, it means, that absorption is below 1.0 around both these hours.

When a zone number is marked with an asterisk (*), it means, that the path to this zone passes through the north aurora1 zone. The aurora1 zones lie in a narrow band along the dotted lines shown on fig. 1. For paths through these zones absorption is irre- gular and usually much stronger, which has not been accounted for in the calculation. How can YOU use table 21

I should like to emphasize, that the periods listed in table 2 are all purely the results of the above mentioned calculatiogs, and no attention has been paid to DX - experience. Furthermore the value of 1.0 for Kd has been my own choice. If I had chosen a larger value, the periods would have becpme longer, and vice versa. The reason why I chose 1.0 is, that I found out, that when Kd was above this value, only close or high- powered stations on the higher frequencies would come through.

That is, you may use the periods given in the following way: If you want to receive a station on a frequency lower than say about 6.5 MHz, you should be inside the periods in order to have a chance. Absorption will usually be smallest (Kd=O) in the middle part of the periods, however you must note, that many stations will sign off after a few hours of the open period, as thiaperiods usually cover the night-time. In many ca- ses sign on may be just before the open period closes, so often you must operate in the first and in the latest hours of the periods. On the higher frequencies you may also be able to hear stations outside the periods given, but normally within a few hours on each side. The stronger the power of the station and the closer the zone considered the longer you may move outside the periods, but this will have to be up to your own judgement.

For the zones close to Europe there will be some deviations, as it will become important, where in the zone the station is situated. The periods calculated for the close zones are thus of little value, and are included for the sake of completeness only.

In working out table 2 I have of courge noticed many interesting things, that it is not possible to list. Sometimes the fall of Kd from 1 to 0 or the rise from 0 to 1 oc- curs rapidly, which means, that the fade-in or -out will be rather l'sharpll, tha& is within a short time, while at other times this may occur slowly. Also the rise in Kd above the value of 1 may occur more or less rapidly. For some periods the absorption stays close to 1.0 all the time, the result of which may be, that stations on the lower frequencies will come through very poorly or may be not at all, depending on the distance and the power. For most periods however the middle part will have a Kd of 0, which should give the theo- retically strongest signal strength.

It is worth to note, that when the absorption is 0, the incident field intensity will be independent on the frequency used. When the absorption is above 0, this will affect the lower frequencies mostly. Thus for the same power you will get the strongest signal on the high frequencies. - However, we also have to remember the so-called MUF (maximum US- able frequency). That is, if you move to still higher fqs, the incident field strength wili start to drop off again, and the result is, that there will be a certain frequency range, which will give you the strongest signal. Another thing that must be considered is the to- tal radio noise. More about this, and also about the above mentioned J and Q factor in next SUN. --- Until then all comments on this article will be much appreciated! 73’s de CF.

After -the news has just besn released that i3r.itidls first local commercial radio sta- tj.onp the tiny little MANX RADIO on the ?s3~; CI? Man, is to increase power to 1OkWs Li; colrld be interesting to dig in the t~isiory of this magnificent small radio stntiin.

T!Ic story goes back to early 1964, when the hanx Government asked for a licence fcr a local radio station of 1OkWs power. This could not be met, but a licence was !.ssued only for a VHF tx.

i’lcin;< Radio began its operations in the mid- s:.:~~lr~ier of 1964 from a caravan situated on thr: hillside outside Douglas. This site I y a 1; 2 overage of only half of the island and, since the original Post Office licen-; I:F? wm for VHF only, a mere 10 per cent of Pianxmcn could hear the station at first. Thing:; soan changed though. The station moved its headquarters to LIouqlas seafront. At Foxdale the station erected two twin 180 r ‘d”i masts for the medium wave transmissions eni: on the peak of Snaefell a VHF tx was in- stalled. ‘T‘hu station gained an extension to its licence and began broadcasts on 1295 FA as well as 1594 kc/s at dawn andsk and VHF, on an increased power of 2 kWs. On the medium wave frequency Manx Radi.o Could bo well heard in ths much of the North oi‘-’ England.

4s Plr;nx Radio was operatinq on very low po- tii3.i it could never publicise the holiday resort to the rest of the UK. Therefore the Tourist Board didn’t hesitate to use Caro- Eino far this purpose, so Of course when ;‘arolinc was forced aff the air and towed ?'I::x:.' h:lnx Radio pressed for an increase in lousr and a workinq party was set up to

discuss the matter. The rssult was no in- crease in power to Manx Radio, During the following debate at Tynwald, the Speaksr of the Iiousa, !Yr Charles Kerruish said that Manx Governmont should turn up the power of Manx Rad.io, in dsfiance of the British Gov. veto. He andod by saying: “FRY y8arS We’ve been negotiating, and for years we have sought an amicable solution. Now the time has cone for act50n!“, This statement was put out in 1969 and for two years nothing happened, and everything was quiet around Manx Radio untii a few weeks ago.

So far flanx Radio hasn't got the permis- sion for an increase in power for their 1295 kc/s transmitter, but it now seems that nothing can stop them. According to their fan club newslntter tests with the new tx were to start on October 23rd, but so far nothing has been heard, but we're waiting, From tha tapes of the station that yours truly has received it shows that Manx Radio is a very entertaining station, although concentrating on pop--music also with local. affairs and local commercials0

Unfortunately no contributions this month, but then not much has happened on the pop- and pirate radio scene. Rut if you get any news you know where to send it. Thanx! So until next month, when ,I hop8 we’ll b8 able to give you more details of Manx Ra- dio’s power-increesa.;iou know what to do... Take care,., POUL FOGED
