allrOund ServiceOur offer to guests from abroad

On the morning of the first day of the vacation, our couriers ring the doorbell of our Swiss guests and take charge of their entire luggage along with the bikes. this way, a family can travel complete-ly relaxed using the public trans-portation to the starting point of their planned bicycle tour (and travel back home from their des-tination point), where their bikes await them (while the luggage is already in the first accommoda-tion).

this service can be availed for a moderate flat fee of cHF 40./ per person, which is the only ad-dition to the inclusive price of the offer. an exclusive service from Swisstrails for families, e-Bike riders, top class guests.

the complete service for our guests, who arrive by flight, begins with meeting them in person at the airport. From there, the guests are transferred to hotel close to the airport, where they can relax after their flight. as part of a personal briefing, guests are usually intro-duced to the details of their booked tour on the day of their arrival. the next morning, they are transferred from the first hotel directly to the starting point of the tour.

at the end of the tour after the last overnight stay at the destina-tion point the guests are trans-ferred by Swisstrails directly to the airport for their return flight. they

never have to worry about their luggage right from the time of their arrival at the airport until their departure they can enjoy unen-cumbered.

also those arriving by car can take advandays of this allround Ser-vice: they drive directly to the free-of-cost parking place on the company premises of Swisstrails. the same services provided to guests arriving by flight are also provided here (briefing, transfers, luggage and bicycle transport).

Please note: these additional ser-vices are in the published package price (they correspond to a sur-charge of cHF 40./ per person).

  • a bicycle tour of superlatives with exceptional, top class hotels, the unesco World heritage sites the swiss alps Jungfrau-aletsch and the lavaux, vineyard terraces, along the rhone and lake Geneva. at the same time, also a perfect illustration of the exclusive services of swisstrails.

    Text: Ruedi Jaisli

start near the glacierYou start off at the top of the Furka Pass, with a racy descent past the rapidly melting rhone Glacier, from which the river bearing the same name emerges. 23 kilometres of ices at a stretch! the Great aletsch Glacier is the biggest and lon-gest outlet glacier in the alps. Over thousands of years, the glacier has shaped the magnificent high mountain landscape around Jungfrau, aletsch and Bietschhorn, which is a uneScO world Heritage Site since 2001. From the spectacular lookouts, you can look right in the middle, into the icy heart of the world Heritage. On the riederalp, in the villa cassel, is the Pro natura centre aletsch, the gateway to the world Heritage (entry included). the glacier winds elegantly past the majestic al-pine three-thousanders and four-thousanders.

descent, towards the sun and the lakeafter a rapid downhill ride from the riederalp by bike, starting from Brig, the valley of the rohne widens: the main valley is now wider, the sun warms the dry mountain slopes. a thermal head-wind (valley wind) makes it advisable for cyclists to cover the distances well before noon. the af-ternoons are best spent in the thermal baths (Bri-gerbad, Saillon-les-Bains) along the route. High up

guards a round tower, Martigny on the rhone el-bow; St-Maurice at the narrowest point in the val-ley watches over a golden treasury of the church. in the lower rhone valley, the dents-du-Midi dominate the high alpine scenery, until you finally arrive in le Bouveret on the shore of lake Geneva. lake Geneva is like a small silver sea surrounded by snowy peaks.

Wine omnipresent on the waysidethe unique lavaux vinorama, which is a part of to the uneScO world Heritage, is a discovery centre for wines and the wine region. around 170 wines of the region are presented, of which, every week, a few chosen wines can be tasted at the bar or in the tasting area. a film in eight languages shows the work programme of the wine makers in the lavaux region for the whole year.

a premium offerthe destinations in the hotels of the category top class are definitely worth a glance for hotels like the eurotel in Montreux, the Mirabeau in lausanne or the la Barcarolle in Prangins un-doubtedly belong to the highlights of this bicycle tour. and at Swisstrails, Premium also means: no lugging around of baggage. thanks to our bi-cycle and luggage service from / to domicile and the daily luggage service on the go, you can enjoy unencumbered not only your bike tour, but also your arrival to the start on the Furka Pass and the journey home from Geneva or Prangins a real holiday experience, exclusively with Swiss trails and of course, also for our guests from abroad, because they also benefit on this tour from the ex-clusive Swisstrails allround service, with Meet & Greet at the airport (for guests arriving by flight),

reserved, free parking (for arrival by car) and the included transfers from zurich on the Furka Pass to the starting point and return from Prangins / Geneva.

travel in switzerland for several days on bicy-cles with your family. is that possible at all? and if yes, is it possible to do it without stress? this was exactly what we wanted to try out and so the brunner family started out on two wheels to conquer the mittelland.

    Text: Katrin Brunner

while my daughters and my husband will travel on their own bicycles, i want to try out an electro bike, a flyer, this once. the Mittelland route is especially appropriate for this. i promise myself a comfort-able ride, without the battery, that should last for 40 to 50 km depending on the gradient, running out within an hour. and since we as a family also want to test the new service of Swisstrails Bike and luggage transport from/to residence at the same time on the Mittelland route, the bicycles and the luggage of our children is fetched from home, and i can also test my rented electro bike right at the starting location of the tour with Swisstrails in regensdorf. while the Swisstrails courier is already transporting our luggage to the first stage stop, we cycle our way in the direction of Baden through Furttal, which is still shaped by agricultural to some extent.

bathing like the romans the Brunner family conquers the historic town of Baden in aargau. even the ancient romans knew to appreciate the healing properties of the thermal springs in their aqua Helvetica. the Mittelland route continues to meander through the hills of the still young Jura and we trundle along with it. Father and daughters are able to keep up with me very well as i begin to love my flyer more and more. it is

i who finds the castles of wildegg, Habsburg and lenzburg that crown the hills to be fascinating. the others merely find them to be pretty. earlier we gave a thought to the overnight accommodation on offer. Sleep-in-straw, standard hotel or top class. we elected to use a colourful mix of the offered comfort level options, and begin with the standard hotel variant.

the plan for the second day was to reach Solothu-rn. My e-bike performs well today as well. along the river aare, we are amazed by the sight of the Gsgen nuclear power plant, which is visible from far with its cooling tower. the Mittelland route becomes flat, then flatter. we are astonished by the many small nature reserves and places soaked in history worth seeing in the heavily commercially and agriculturally used Swiss Mit-telland. we pass aarburg with its castle visible, which is poised very cheekily on a beak of rock. in the baroque city of Solothurn.

sand beach, almost like it is by the seaa feeling like being by the sea. Sand beach, sun, and an espresso. instead of a waterline, the horizon is formed by the Jura range. Since todays stretch is completely flat and a light cold wind is building a pleasant tail wind, there is enough time to visit the lakeside town of Biel. the sand beach there also gives rise to Mediterranean feelings as before. the charming mix of languages that can be heard ev-erywhere, which change rapidly from Swiss German to French and back, also match the ambience. the next destination is Murten.

we prefer to cycle our way further along the Mur-ten and the neuenburger lake towards Yverdon the

next day. Both the lakes, and the innumerable op-portunities for a quick jump into the water and gain-ing a tan resembling a vacation in the caribbean are simply too alluring. as we reach estavayer-le-lac a little later, given the brilliant summer weather we also leave out the Froschmuseum which is a backup plan in case of bad weather, and our daugh-ters jubilantly display their skills on the unique wa-ter ski lift. 20 kilometres later arriving in Yverdon-les-Bains we are soaking in sweat in spite of the various bathing breaks in the lake and are happy once again that our luggage is already awaiting us. we end our family trip along the Mittelland route after five days. the route continues up to lausanne and could be extended to the rhone route or even up to Geneva. Perhaps next time and with some added relaxation days in another top class hotel in Prangins near nyon, directly next to the lake like the villas of film stars.

  • Lakes Route

rail & Bike On tHe GOlden PaSS line

  • nomen est omen. the lakes route is one of the most attractive of the cycling switzerland, but also the most demanding. but thanks to the new swisstrails offer rail & bike on the Golden pass line, not a problem: if the climb is too steep or the stage destination is too far, from lake Geneva, you can always take the train or the ship to lucerne.

    Text and images: Peter Hummel

the cycling switzerland route of superlativesthe lakes route bearing the number 9 takes you past 10 famous and 4 small, completely unknown lakes, and with its 504 km long stretch, it is the longest ever route in Switzerland. However, it also has the third highest in altitude. Swisstrails has now created an offer, which shows respects for this demand: On the western half of the national veloland-route 9, from Montreux to lucerne, the steepest of slopes can be covered by train. instead of the 2600 metres of altitude, there are only 1100 metres spread over six stages which can be overcome without great physical training.

climbing assistance is recommended right at the starteither from Montreux with the GoldenPass line to Montbovon. no less spectacular is the short cut with the funicular railway from vevey to Mont Pel-erin. with two short but scenic climbs, you soon ar-rive at chtel-St-denis, where you will be rewarded with a rare 20 kilometres of flat stretch through the wide Fribourg region. the picturesque town of Bulle is definitely worth a decent break, but the nearby stage destination of Gruyres is already enticing. Here, we find ourselves at the epi-centre of Swiss

tourism. the medieval town, minus all the day-trip-pers, is very picturesque, and the double cream me-ringues are inimitable. with the intyamon (upper Gruyre) and Pays d'enhaut, you cycle through un-known landscapes.

it gets sophisticated... Gstaadthe jets on the Saanen airfield announce the so-phisticated Gstaad, the next stage destination. For the nourishing climb to Saanenmser, the culmina-tion of the tour, it is recommended to take the train for the second time. in zweisimmen, we first cross the runway of the former military airfield, the sec-ond of the not less than five on this tour, and then cross the Simme a dozen times in the next 25 kilo-metres (which is often on covered wooden bridges) two more superlatives! But real highlight are the many preserved, original, ornate farmhouses from the 16th to 18th. century in Spiez we again delight at the vastness of lake thun. For the last ten kilo-metres of our stage from interlaken to iseltwald, we reward ourselves with a trip on the steamer.

and finally the brnig passYou can also start the next day tasteful and stylish to deal with the forest path with some nourishing climbs: By boat and by europe's oldest funicular to Belle epoque Hotel Giessbach and the Giess-bach Falls. For the last major hurdle of the tour, the Brnig Pass, again the use of the railway is recommended. then in Obwalden and nidwalden, the lakes follow as if on a blue ribbon: lungernsee (unmatched in terms of intense colour), Sarnersee, wichelsee (this smallest lake is a big nature idyll) alpnachersee and lake lucerne. the tour destina-tion can be reached from lucerne on the regional route 38 or you can treat yourself, as the grand

finale, again to the steamer. in any case, there is a wonderful wellness hotel waiting in weggis to let the brave cyclists again recharge their batteries.

  • tough hiking stages during the day, relax-ation and wellness at the hotel in the eve-ning and that too in the midst of magnificent mountain scenery: thus our plan, as we took on the six stages of the Via alpina from en-gelberg to adelboden also known by the name bear trek. our expectations were not disappointed.

Text: Mia Hofmann / Picture: Christof Sonderegger

today, fresh apricot cake! reads the blackboard on the Hohtrli. the mountain pass lies a little below the Blmlisalphtte (2,834 m above sea level) and we have climbed just under four hours from the Griesalp. encouraged by the announce-ment, we overcome the last of the steep serpen-tine paths, and sit down on the terrace in the sun. Our glance sweeps over the Blemlisalp glacier and we marvel at how far down it goes to the lake Oeschinen. when the apricot cake is finally in front of us, we grab hungrily at it just the way we had dreamed of it.

alpine relaxationPrivation in the stages during the day, wellness and gourmet menus in the evening: with this aim we have booked the hotel category top-class on the most demanding national hiking trail. the via alpina runs from vaduz to Montreux through 14 alpine passes, we have picked the tenderloin for us: with Sefinafurgga, Hohtrli and Boderchrinde, we have three of the highest passes and with the Grosse and kleine Scheidegg, we have two of the most famous passes on our six stages. we started in engelberg that is, to the Part 2 of the route distribution recommended by Swisstrails, we add-

ed the last stage of Part 1 and to do that we struck out the last stage of Part 2 no problem for the flexible, official tour Operator. Symptomatic of the first three days of the hike: the distances over Jochpass, Grosse and kleine Scheidegg are popular and are bustling in fine weather. But as soon as we leave the 1-hour radius of the moun-tain railway or post bus, peace returns and we can immerse ourselves in nature. the steep flanks of the wetterhorn and eiger dominate the scenery on these stages, first from the Mecca of paraglid-ing Planplatten, then from the nostalgic rosenlaui Hotel and later from the Jungfrau railway. even the weather is a determining factor in the mountains: arrived in the evening just before the storm in Grindelwald, we were surprised by a downpour the next morning and were duly soaked.

luxury for over worked legsafter spending the night in the Beausite Park Ho-tel in wengen, with natural swimming pool, ping-pong table and an excellent dinner, we are ready for the highlights of the tour: From Mrren over the Sefinenfurgge on to the Griesalp and from there via the Hohtrli to kandersteg. the stag-es have it in them, especially the climb towards Hohtrli is notorious. we learn to appreciate the advantages of the luggage service hiking is clearly better with a light rucksack. in the descents, we are glad to have our sticks. the efforts are worth it: a dip in the lake Oeschinensee is the perfect reward of natural wellness.

the next day, summer storms make it impossible to cross the Bunderchrinde. instead, we go by the post bus to adelboden, enjoy ourselves in the rain on the huge trottinett route network and get a

taste of the wellness programme of the Parkhotel Bellevue & Spa. the divine dinner in the 14-Punkte restaurant of the hotel is the perfect end to our Hiking-wellness week: Yes, indulgence and luxury can definitely be combined with demanding alpine hikes!

the long distance hiking trail of the trans swiss trail from porrentruy to medrisio illustrates one of the last great adventures in highly-de-veloped switzerland. numerous landscapes, cultures and sights await along the 32 stages of the 488-jm journey.

    Text: Ruedi Jaisli

Simply explore, spontaneously gaze and marvel at which surprises lay around the next corner: pace across a square, follow a path down the field and again, walk off into wherever it takes you. enjoy the freedom of the soul and anticipate the beau-ty of your surroundings. Get to know the different sceneries, cultures and sights. do not worry about anything, except for the next path sign. the trans Swiss trail offers all of this right from the first step from Saignelgier to across the free mountains and through the three lakes region to Bern. thanks to the public transport system, shorter hikes and riding trains, buses or ships are practically possible anytime.

the offer appeals to comfort hikers who wish to combine gentle physical challenges with cultural insight and gastronomical pleasure. it is a program that is clearly suited to early May (spring blossom-ing) but also during the fog-free autumn month of October. in this tour foreign visitors will naturally enjoy Swiss trails exclusive allround service with a Meet & Greet at the airport, reserved free park-ing (for arrivals by car) and included transfers from zrich to Saignelgier for the start and return from the hikes finish point in Bern.

  • the starting point of the 3-day tour is meirin-gen in the canton of bern. from the railway station square of this small town began the journey for generations of explorers of the alps, was also the historical starting point of the post bus routes in the central alps. We leave the luggage at the station and walk off carefree with only our backpacks. through the haslital, one arrives by post bus or train near innertkirchen in a few minutes. With the tick-et of Via-posta alpina in the pocket, we can decide whether we should cover the route by driving or on foot. on the way to innertkirchen a stopover is worthwhile: the aare meanders along a length of 1,400 meters through the aare Gorge.

    Text: Monika Feldmann

idyllic alpine meadows and steep rock faces: through the haslitalafter this spontaneous detour, the first day's stage begins, from innertkirchen to Guttannen, three hours are announced for the hike. the route runs along freshly mowed lawn in to a moss green, steeply ascending forest. Once you get to the top, you have stunning view: behind the lush meadows and picturesquely embedded wooden houses, is a mountain range with mighty rock faces lined up against each other. after a break in front of this wonderful scenery, we continue on the Passo del Solego. early evening, the desti-nation is reachedthe little village of Guttannen. at the over 200-year-old inn Bren, we are warm-ly welcomed, our luggage is already there in the quaint room. a whole day of hiking makes you tiredand happy.

retrace history: hiking on the mule trackthe next morning we wake up to the sounds of the church bells of the nearby church. well-rest-ed, we go to the second day's stage, which starts with the post bus and leads from Guttannen to ul-richen. Punctually, the bus turns around the corner, it quickly traverses the bottom of the Haslital valley towards Grimselpass. we get off at the Handegg stop, from there we walk on through the Bernese alps. the route to the Grimselpass runs through beautiful archaic witnesses of the trade-route times: a well-preserved path, laid out with plates and blocks, paves the way. Soon we reach the cen-turies-old Hlenplatte, whose rock, once smoothly polished by the glacier, shines in the sun. Gently but steadily we go up and at 1,767m the view to the rterichsbodensee opens up. at 1,911m it is done: we stand on the dam wall of the Grimsel, a few me-ters away is the historic Grimsel hospice. the alpin Hotel is perched on a mighty rocky spur above the reservoir lake, the panorama is breathtaking. after a break in the gorgeous mountains, we go on our final climb. at 2,164m the Grimselpass is reached, a fresh wind is blowing over the pass and across the deep blue totensee lake. as we walk down the Gomserdal, we are accompanied by the views of the rhone Glacier. after a good six-hour hike, we reach the destination of the day, ulrichen. we enjoy the rays of the evening sun, the delicacies of valais, and a glass of local wine at the hospitable Hotel astoria.

one step from the Valais to ticino: via the nufenen passOn the third day, the trail leads to the nufenen Pass. the driver steers the post bus safely through the tight curves and narrates amusing stories about europe's highest mountain pass road. the three-

tone horn of the post bus sounds as the nufenen Pass height is reached at 2,478m. we get off and let the scenery work its magic on us. with one-step we can switch on the long pass from wallis to tici-no and go towards airolo. we hike through a rug-ged landscape of sharp-edged rocks, over steppe-like grass hills, down into the val Bedretto, where the water splashes from all directions. For the last twelve kilometres from aqua Hall to airolo we opt-ed for the post bus. the driver takes us to the sta-tion in airolo, located at the foot of the Gotthard pass. One last time we pick up our luggage, then the train brings us back home. we are sure: next year we will hit the road again with Swisstrails!

a further 3-day offer (part b) takes you from airolo to meiringen. the two parts can be combined:www.swisstrails.ch.

they now have a wonderful alter-native: Glacier express by rail & hike that is by train as before, now alsoon foot through the most beautiful stretches, if they so wish. How is this possible? it is simple: You do not cross the stretch in 8 hours as a tourist in a rush, but you take 6 days. in addition, Swisstrails trans-ports your luggage from one accom-modation to the other. therefore you sit in the train unencumbered and can disembark from the train at any station to walk a stretch and then take one of the next trains (the usual trains run at hourly intervals).
