The Society established its Regional Community programme in 2015, enabling members and colleagues to work together to support the local community and demonstrate our co-operative difference. This includes supporting local charities and volunteering together to help build strong local communities.

20 Regional Communities are now fully established across our trading area, each with a local Steering Group in place made up of local colleagues, Board members, Executive members and active local members overseen by Regional Ambassadors.

Key Highlights from the Swindon area since 2015• Our colleagues across the Swindon area have completed 4,838 volunteer hours in the local

community • Colleagues and members have donated over 3,000 items to local Food Banks, providing meals

to over 80 families in need• Over 1,000 young people have been engaged in the local area working with a range of

educational establishments to support the development of young people. Local schools and educational establishments supported include the following; Swindon Academy, Swindon New College, Lethbridge Primary School, UET College, Millbook Primary School, and Stanford Primary School

• We have distributed £47,000 through community grants & carrier bag monies to 65 local good causes

• Raised £17,000 for local charity partners including; Pennyhooks Farm, Root and Branch, The October Club, CALM (Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Movement), and Wiltshire Treehouse

SWINDON AREA REGIONAL COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

There are 401 colleagues and

19,000 members located in Regional Communities in the

Swindon area, with the following trading sites; 22 in total, 11 Food,

1 Travel, 5 Funeral, 3 Post Offi ces, 2 Childcare sites

Regional Communities in the Swindon area include North

and South Swindon, and White Horse.

WHITE HORSE REGIONAL COMMUNITY CASE STUDY

Our colleagues in White Horse Regional Community have been busy volunteering in their local community and raising money for their local charity partner, the October Club, a day centre caring for people suffering from Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

To help with fundraising the Society has donated food hampers to the October Club, with colleagues helping to run the club’s annual fundraising ball.

Other fundraising activity has included Easter themed dress down events for colleagues, Hawaiian themed fun day events at local Food Stores (including face painting and bouncy castles), and colleagues completing the three Peaks Challenge to raise £2,000.

The long term aim is to raise enough funds to buy the October Club a new kitchen by January 2019.

SWINDON REGIONAL COMMUNITY CASE STUDY

Colleagues in the Swindon area have built a strong local relationship with Wiltshire Treehouse, a charity providing bereavement support for children and young people in Swindon and Wiltshire.

Partnership activity has included a range of fundraising activities including local events and colleagues completing a 10K run to raise funds.

Colleagues also completed a 12 hour cycle and row-a-thon covering the whole circumference of Swindon, which is over 160 miles.

These activities have raised over £1,000 for Wiltshire Tree House so far, and Swindon Regional Community aim to continue their efforts to raise enough money to enable the charity to employ a fund raising specialist to help sustain the charity going forward.

Beyond fundraising, local colleagues have also helped set up regular networking between Wiltshire Tree House and a local Swindon Youth Mentoring project (SMASH – Swindon Mentoring and Self Help).
