If your child is transitioning to Year 7 next year please see information below regarding information evenings at our Rivers College Campuses. We would highly encourage families to go along, meet staff and gain information about the fabulous programs and initiatives at their local zoned campus.

Our Year 6 students will have the opportunity to experience the secondary school environment on Tuesday 26th February, when each Rivers College campus will be running an Orientation Day. The purpose of this day is to expose students to high school early in the year. Even though many of our children are zoned to different campuses we will be attending Richmond River High for the Orientation Day. Transition days will still be held at the end of the year, with students attending the campus they have enrolled at. Absences An important part of communicating with families is to follow up student absences, particularly where the school has not yet been provided with a reason for the absence. Each Wednesday and Friday mornings SMS notifications will be sent out to request the school be contacted to explain an absence. These messages are not meant to cause offence, they are merely a reminder to contact the school. Please remember that if an absence is not explained within 7 days it will automatically be recorded as unjustified. Best practice is always to contact the school via phone, email or Skoolbag on the day of the absence in order for school records to be kept up to date. Special Religious Education (SRE) Scripture will begin this week for those students who have elected to attend Special Religious Education (SRE). At Lismore South Public School we offer 3 alternatives during Scripture time;

1. Catholic Scripture 2. Protestant Scripture 3. Non Scripture

The Catholic Diocese of Lismore is our provider for Catholic Scripture and the Presbyterian Church of Australia is our provider for Protestant Scripture. Should you wish to change your child/children’s Scripture preference please contact the school office and a form will be sent home. Family Holidays Family holidays are often amazing experiences for children. Please remember, however, that if you wish to take your children out of school to travel for a holiday you need to apply for an Application for Exemption (from school attendance). This is a Department of Education requirement and the form is available from the school office. Publishing Student Information / Permission to Publish If your child enrolled at Lismore South Public School from 2014, you would have been required to give the school permission to publish information about your child for the purposes of sharing his/her experiences with other students, informing the school and broader community about school and student activities and recording student participation in noteworthy projects or community service. Pre 2014 students completed a separate permission note to publish student information.

The communications in which your child’s information may be published include but are not limited to: ■ Public websites of the Department including the school website, the Department’s intranet (staff only), blogs and wikis ■ Departmental publications including the school newsletter, annual school magazine and school report, promotional material published in print and electronically including on the Department websites ■ Official departmental and school social media accounts on networks such as the school’s YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages. Our most common forms of publication for student information can include; DOJO, the school website, Skoolbag, school brochures and promotional material, articles in local newspapers and our school Facebook page. If you wish to update or change your child/children’s permission to publish please contact the school office. School Photos Our School Photos will be taken over 2 days this year to accommodate both Preschool groups and the Year 6 High School Orientation Day. Most class, individual and family photos (except Years 5 & 6) will be taken on Tuesday 26th February, with the remaining class, school leaders, family and individual photos (including Years 5 & 6) and the whole school photo taken on Thursday 28th February. Regretfully, if your child is absent or late to school on either of these days, we cannot retake photos. Please ensure you have completed the school photo envelope and returned it, with payment, to the school office by the due date. What has been happening in Preschool this week? Our Preschool team are very proud of the way the Echidnas and Goannas have settled into Preschool. We have had happy and confident children with little or no tears. It shows us that the children already feel a sense of belonging to our Preschool community. Preschool Photos Personalised photo order envelopes were handed out last week. The Echidnas group will have their photos taken on Tuesday, 26th February and the Goanna group on Thursday, 28th.

Message Slips If there should be a change of routine with your child e.g. Change in who is picking them up, please fill in a message slip and place it in the box near the sign on sheet.

Class Dojo Have you downloaded the Class Dojo app? Through Class Dojo, we are able to communicate with you about your child and their day in Preschool. You are able to send messages directly to the Preschool Educators, when required. We will also send information about the children’s day and things that are happening in Preschool, eg ‘recipe of the week’ (sponsored by GSAC).

Class Library and Parent Library We have given each child a plastic sleeve and borrowing sheet so they can borrow a book from the Preschool Library for you to enjoy as a family at home. Books can be changed daily or weekly. Thank you to Victoria (Hudson’s mum) who has donated some adult novels for parents to borrow too. Feel free to come in and borrow a book from our new parent section in our class library.

Preschool Committee Meeting The Preschool Committee consists of Preschool staff and interested family members. The aim of the committee is to reflect on current Preschool practice, gaining family member’s thoughts, ideas and opinions on relevant topics. The committee meets once a term. This term’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, 27th February at 3.15pm in the Preschool.

Craft Items We are seeking boxes (muesli bar, cereal etc) and cling wrap rolls for our ‘Invention Centre’. Unfortunately due to hygiene regulations, we are unable to accept toilet rolls.

Recipe of the Week Our Recipe of the Week is sponsored and provided by SWITCH Gym at Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre. Please see our community noticeboard for a different recipe each week. Copies of the recipes are available on request.

Before School Assessments During the year, Anna Tonkin (North Coast Area Health Nurse) will visit Preschool to conduct a ‘Before School Assessment’ on each child. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s vision, hearing or speech, please see Miss Keed, Ms Collins or Miss Beck as you may be able to book you child’s assessment earlier.

What to bring? Please remember to pack a broad brimmed hat and a change of clothes for your child each day. Please clearly label your child’s belongings.

Creative Arts Program

Students engage in different types of dancing, drama and movement during the weekly lesson on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. This ranges from bush, Hip Hop, creative modern, line and current popular dances. Drama activities are conducted to integrate into all aspects of musical performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OobR681KUTo

Each weekly lesson also includes instrumental tuition allowing students to develop skills in reading, creating and performing music. Each instrument is taught at different terms in the year and include the recorder, percussion, Bucket, Chair & ‘Drums Alive’ and chime bars.

Separate tuition is provided to interested and capable students who are committed to learning, practising and performing. This tuition takes place for guitar, ukulele and didge before school and lunch or recess breaks. All tuition and instruments are provided free. Teachers give up their own time to provide this access. Tuition times will be published and posted on the hall doors and office.

Help? We would be very pleased if any community members, with any ability or expertise in these fields, would be willing to give some of their time to the kids. Any of the following times or parts of these times would be best - 8:30 am – 9:00 am; 11:00 am – 12:00 pm; or 1:30 pm -2:00 pm. If we get this support, we may be able to add further instruments for extra tuition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEnayqaOWPE&feature=share https://vimeo.com/168212649

Singing and appreciation of all types is always a part of our weekly lessons. The material varies in difficulty, genre and interest levels. From simple rhymes to harmonies, everyone is encouraged to join in. Once again, there are choir performance opportunities for students with ability and/or enthusiasm. We also investigate how and why music is made and explore

the impact of famous musicians. Music develops neural pathways, increases brain function and taps into the ‘feel good’ part of the brain. https://bit.ly/2VBl7uB
