SWELLABLE PACKERMechanical packers have been used in non-cemented completions to create an

annular seal between the open hole and the production casing for many years.

But in some cases such as slotted liners, it is not possible to pressure up and

set the packers. This creates an opportunity for introducing Swellable Packers.

Swellable Packer

The swell packer system can be used either in cased or openhole wells. In some

openhole applications, operator may be able to avoid cementing and perforating

altogether, reducing the expense associated with these operations. By reducing

well construction costs, saving rig time, and isolating producing zones, the Swell

packer system attain previously unachievable levels of oilfield performance.

Depending on the characteristic of the natural rubber, it swells when exposed to

hydrocarbon / water based fluid, the amount of swell depends on the chemistry of

the fluid and the temperature at which the exposure occurs. Fluid absorption into

the swellable elastomer occurs through diffusion. It diffuses into the elastomer

through the random thermal motion of the atoms that are in the fluid.

Swellable Packer

FEATURES:

The swelling process continues until the internal stresses inside the elastomer reach equilibrium. The swell pressure increases till no more diffusion occurs. At this point, a differentially sealing annular barrier is created.

The benefit of a swellable packer is its simplicity in operation. There are no moving parts required to work, through pipe manipulation or by applied hydraulic pressure. No special service personnel are needed. The packers are simply run to depth, similar to the casing, and allowed to swell before production or injection operations begin.

Expansion rates and differential pressure ratings depend on temperature, expansion fluid, time, rubber compound, and length of seal. The seal lengthis determined by the required differential pressure, the well temperature, and application. Solid metal end rings are secured to the base pipe and protect the elastomer while the completion is run to depth. The proprietary elastomer compounds react to well-bore fluids, drilling mud, or completion fluids and can expand up to 3 times of their run-in volume.
