Sweeping Away Blindness

Connect with your community and build your Lion legacy by planning a Centennial Community Legacy Project during our Centennial Celebration. Legacy Projects are visible gifts to your community that commemorate our Centennial and create a lasting legacy of your service contributions. Your Legacy Project will serve as a reminder of just how important your club is to the community during the Centennial and beyond. All Lions clubs around the world are encouraged to complete a Legacy Project by June 30, 2018, so start planning yours today!

Plan Your Legacy Project

With three levels of participation, there’s an opportunity for every club to get involved. Choose a project from the list below or develop your own to address specific needs in your community.

From Your District Governor - DG Bob Allgood

From Your First Vice District Governor - FVDG Betty Robbins

Yours in Lionism,

DG Bob Allgood

Greetings Fellow Lions,

Even though it is officially winter, I‘m thankful that we have had a mild winter compared to last year! I’m also thankful we did not receive the

heavy snow storm that hit a majority of the country last week.

My travels this month have taken me to Atwater for club visitation, Deerfield for Zone 3 meeting, Morgantown, West Virginia for DG

training, Warren for club visitation, Maumee State Park for the Winter Retreat and to Sebring for the Long Range Planning meeting and the

GLT-GMT meeting.

The Centennial Service Challenge is in full swing, and we are trying to “Serve” 100 million people before June 30, 2018 in the categories of

Youth, Vision, Hunger, & Environment. As of the end of December, LCI has reported we have served 68 million people worldwide: 24

million in the Youth category, 11 million in Vision, 14 million in hunger, and 19 million in Environment. We have almost reached the 25

million mark for the youth category, however; we will not stop there, we have another 2 ½ years to this challenge and the youth category

will continue to grow! How is your club participating in these programs and are these activities being reported to Lions International by

your secretary by way of MyLCI?

The last District convention of 13-D, as we know it today, will be here before we know it. Come celebrate the accomplishments of District

Governor Bob and Lion Liz at the 50th Birthday Party!

We need to continue to invite friends and acquaintances to join our clubs and “Strengthen Your Pride.” Let’s make Governor Bob’s year a success in membership!

Lions of 13D, I would like to thank you for the hard work you have done so far this year. You have heard the call to serve and you

have answered as only Lions of MD13D. Lions International has announced the Lions Centennial Legacy Project, there are three (3)

levels that can done. Level 1 - Raise your Community Visibility. Level 2 - Provide a Community Gift . Level 3 - Make a Community

Impact. Please download the information and consider a Legacy Project.

Lions remember please " Invite to Impact " for every new member you bring into your club the more impact you will have on your

Community. We as Lions have impacted 184,076 people in the communities of our great District. Again I thank you for everything

you are doing in the name of Lionism.

Yours in Lionism

From Your Second Vice District Governor - SVDG Wayne Christen

Yours in Lionism,

SVDG Wayne Christen

Greetings fellow Lions of 13D. As I write this message, I can't help but wish it will be available to the smallest audience I will ever write to.

My hope is that each month, going forward, 13D will have more Lions than the previous month. As we go into the final months of our

year, it is inevitable that we will lose some members for a variety of reasons. Therefore, we must make a concerted effort to increase our

numbers sufficiently enough to offset those losses. Many clubs have already seen an increase in their numbers, but others have yet to in-

duct a new member this year. Now is the time to hold your membership drives.

When is your club's next meeting? Do you have a prospective member coming to that meeting? Have you "asked one"? Does your club

have a membership drive scheduled? Are you actively involved in its planning? Or, are we waiting for others to do it because we have al-

ready sponsored a new Lion?

In the past 2 1/2 years I have heard just about every reason why "we can't get any new Lions". If that is your attitude, then my response is

"HOGWASH". I have witnessed some interesting turnarounds by some clubs that were challenged to increase their membership. One

small club had not had a new member in over 3 years, but recently added 2 to their club. It can be done. So I challenge every club in 13D

to add 2 new members before June 30th. Now, it is up to you. Will you accept the challenge? Will you step up and bring new people into

the greatest community service organization in the world? I have confidence in you. Let's do it.

Winter Retreat 25 Lions from D attended Winter Retreat, held at The Maumee Bay State Park

Resort in Oregon, Ohio. Our own Governor Bob gave the Invocation for all

meals. Sessions were new and some related to the area in which we were stay-

ing. The Resort was outstanding in its location, rooms and food. Entertainment

followed each dinner, and International 1st Vice President, Bob Corlew was

guest speaker at Saturday’s luncheon.

Governor Bob participated in the contest of guessing how many York Pepper-

mints were in a container. He guessed it exactly at 127. Next year’s Retreat’s

registration fee was the winner’s prize.

Pilot Puppy, Gibbs, attended his first retreat. He was introduced to VP Corlew

and had the honor of being alongside him in a picture. Trainers of Gibbs are

PDG Tom and Lion Marian Zickefoose.

News from the Uniontown Lions Paul Ruley Eyeglass Recycling Center

The Uniontown Lions Paul Ruley Eyeglass Recycling Center just completed their 15th year of providing cleaned and

graded eyeglasses. Since the recycling center began in 2001, 9,031 volunteer hours have resulted in 111,972 processed glasses,

140,174 glasses received and 109,367 glasses delivered to various mission teams. Many thanks to all the District Lions teams

providing eyeglasses.

The Uniontown Lions Paul Ruley Eyeglass Recycling Center supplied 500 cleaned and graded reading glasses as well as

200 sunglasses, 50 clip on sunglasses, 50 stretch over sunglasses and 100 ball hats to High Mill Church of North Canton, Ohio

for their mission trip to Ukraine.

2016 USA-Canada Lions Leadership Forum

Omaha, Nebraska

Sept. 15-17, 2016

Leadership ? Service ? It’s what Lions do !

“Leadership for Service”, the theme for the 2016 Forum, reflects our goal of equipping our Lions to meet the Centennial Service chal-

lenge in performing 100 million acts of service.

Saturday afternoon will have three large service projects that every attendee will be able to participate in. Corresponding seminars have

been added, teaching the skills and organization needed to better prepare service projects at the Club and District level.

Opening night, Thursday brings master illusionist and motivational entertainer, Billy Riggs. On Friday, Lion Jay Blake brings his drag race

car “Follow a Dream” to the Forum, along with his amazing story of overcoming a blinding accident to follow his racing dream. Saturday we look forward to the inspiring words of our then International President, Cahncellor Bob Corlew. We finish the evening

with Retired General Dick Abel, who after a long career of military, private sector and public leadership will be talking about the leader

within each of us.

Greetings from Alabama!!

I am looking forward to my trip to Ohio the weekend of March 11, 2016. I do hope that I can met you, hear of

your club successes and discuss the future of our association, LIONS Club International.

I am excited about the Centennial Membership Challenge which has been laid out before us During my visit, I

will be sharing with those in attendance how we can all be recognized for our dedication to membership growth

in a presentation, “READY, SET, GROW!!”

Those in attendance will also have an opportunity to hear more about our 2015-16 theme, “DIGNITY, HAR-

MONY, HUMANITY”. When Lions live our motto, “WE SERVE”, the theme becomes a reality in our clubs,

our community and our lives.

Please contact your District Governor to get more information about your District Convention.

Until I can greet you in person, please continue to “JUST ASK ONE, EVERYDAY”. It would be my pleasure to

induct your new members during my visit.

Sincerely,

Jerome Thompson
