Nerveless Nocks Ball of Death Motorcycle Stunt Show!

Extreme Live Shark Encounter!

Swartz Creek Hometown Days Directors and Committee Members:

The Swartz Creek Hometown Days

(SCHTD) is a celebration of com-

munity.

It truly takes thousands of man

hours to organize and host this fes-

tival. Plus thousands of dollars in

generous donations from local busi-

nesses and individuals are used to

make it happen. The time, energy

and money is well invested as you

will see as the entire community

comes together to play.

The Carnival will be set up and

ready for fun on Thursday, May 30th.

The SCHTD committee is hosting a

kickoff dinner where the King and

Queen of Hometown Days will be

crowned. Right after the dinner you

can head over to the Entertainment

Tent to watch the Bubba’s Got Talent

Finals.

Our two main attractions this

year are The Nerveless Nocks Ball

of Death Motorcycle Stunt Show

and Sway Pole Act sponsored by Fi-

nancial Plus and the Extreme Live

Shark Encounter sponsored by Patsy

Lou Automotive Group. These acts

will be performing Friday, Saturday

and Sunday.

The Entertainment tent this year

will host Green Bottle Fly, Last

Summer & Crush. Then enjoy the

music of Waking Vegas and Almost

Unplugged and several local youth

bands to perform in the Meijer Com-

munity Tent.

There are a great number of FREE

things to do and see during the fes-

tival. Even the Carnival rides will

be FREE on Friday morning from

Where Everyone Feels At Home!

A big thank you to the many committee members, volunteers andsponsors that come together every year from the Swartz Creek Hometown Days Committee!

6:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m.

This year we will be collecting non-

perishable food donations which will

go to the Swartz Creek Food Basket

to help local families. Cash dona-

tions are also accepted at the gate.

Parking is at Sports Creek

Raceway with MTA shuttle buses

running Thursday and Friday,

5:00 pm to 10:00 p.m., Saturday,

10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday

The 2013 Swartz Creek Hometown

Days event is expected to bring in

40,000 people this year. Ranked as

the #1 Festival in Genesee County,

you might wonder how things run so

smoothly. It’s a balancing act to say

the least.

According to Mark Kietzman,

Director of Grounds and Mainte-

nance, “It’s like a barn raising, every-

one pitches in to help” he said. “Mem-

bers of the community and nearly

1,000 volunteers make this all hap-

pen.” Mark truly believes it’s all about

paying it forward. “No one gets paid

for what we do, but once you see the

smiles on the kids’ faces, you realize

it’s all worth it”.

For the past 10 years, Mark has de-

voted three weeks of his life to Home-

town Days. He and his wife, Susie,

Hometown Days Volunteer Direc-

tor, close their business, Insulmaster

Home Improvement, Remodeling &

Restoration of Swartz Creek.

Mark and the team of volunteers

practically build a city within a city.

From the water supply to the electri-

cal supply, generators, signage, tents

and hundreds of other details, Mark

makes sure everything is up and run-

ning for the festival.

Mark relies on the services from

the Swartz Creek Police Department

when needed as well as the Mundy

Township Senior Recruiters who vol-

unteer their time for the security at

the gates and grounds. DPW Direc-

tor, Tom Svrcek, is on-call and avail-

able during the event and after-hours

as well.

The Junior Volunteers, a group of

Middle School and High Schools stu-

dents, donate their time and also help

the commercial vendors during the

event. Local businesses donate food

for the volunteers including Sam’s,

Kroger’s and other area restaurants.

John and Daneen Fick from Fick’s

Excavating provide equipment to

keep things moving during the fes-

tival and Wheeler Party Rental from

New Lothrop provides extra staff-

ing for the 14,000-plus square feet of

tents. Mike and Wanda Cummings

from M.R. Maintenance help with set

up, clean up, and provide equipment

to keep the grounds clean.

The community truly comes togeth-

er for this festival!

If you would like to volunteer time,

resources or make donations for

Hometown Days events, contact Mark

at (810) 635-4444 or visit the Home-

town Days website at www.hometown-

days.org and look for the “Contact

This year’s Grand Marshals are two

long-time community supporters,

John “Jack” and Judy Fick.

The Fick’s have always been com-

munity and service oriented. They

were selected by the Swartz Creek

Hometown Day’s Committee for this

year’s honor. “Jack and Judy Fick rep-

resent good local people” said Wanda

Cummings, Parade Director.

Jack and Judy started Fick Excavat-

ing in 1968. Judy was a cooking teach-

er and did catering before she joined

the family business full-time. Togeth-

er they raised 5 children: Daneen

Fick, Janet Jennings, John Fick, Tim

Fick and Andrea Bonk. They are

proud grandparents to 10 grandchil-

dren and 3 great grandchildren.

Jack was the Clayton Township

Supervisor from 1976 to 1980 and

went on to serve as a Trustee for five

more years. He was a member of the

Fire Board that served Swartz Creek,

Gaines and Clayton Township Fire

Departments and was a founding

member of the County Line Antique

Tractor Club, a club that both he and

Judy are actively involved in on a reg-

ular basis. The antique club will have

over 25 antique tractors in this year’s

parade.

Jack and Judy spent many years as

members of the Jaycee’s, a local ser-

vice organization. Judy was the past

President of the Community PTA and

a board member of the group that

founded the Community Education

Program in Swartz Creek.

Judy coached girls’ softball teams

for years. She and Jack have been

supporters and sponsors of local ball

teams over the years. That same giv-

ing spirit has been coupled with their

involvement in their church, where

they are active and also coordinate

the funeral dinners, something that

comes very easy to Judy with her love

of cooking and catering.

When asked what it means to them

to be selected as the Grand Marshals,

Judy stated “It’s a humbling honor

to be chosen.” Jack on the other

hand laughed and said “It means that

I won’t be driving my tractor in the

parade this year”, something he has

done for many years.

The Ficks’ are looking forward to

their upcoming role as Grand Mar-

shals at this year’s Hometown Days

Parade. Be sure to wave and say hello

when you see them at the parade.

Waking Vegas has been entertain-

ing audiences all over Michigan,

gaining momentum and fans with

their blend of positive rock music and

captivating stage show. Their combi-

nation of crunching guitars and ener-

getic vocals has made them a favorite

at bars, festivals, events and now, they

will rock the Creek on Saturday from

3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Featuring a repertoire of exciting

original songs, they also perform a

selection of well known classic and

modern covers with their own twist,

making Waking Vegas fun for the

whole family.

Members come from a variety of

musical backgrounds. Budd Birdsall,

who founded of the group in 2009,

has played in several bands over the

years. His desire in starting Waking

Vegas was to bring together an en-

semble of people who loved to play

music and wanted to have fun doing

it. What resulted was the current line-

up consisting of Birdsall, Enosh Fee,

Aaron Kuykendall, and Lesley Howe.

Enosh Fee has spent years record-

ing, touring, and writing music of his

own. In addition to playing with two

other successful bands, Enosh also

played guitar for John Schlitt, multi-

Grammy award winning lead singer

of the legendary Christian rock group

Petra.

Drummer Aaron Kuykendall, a

graduate of Kettering University, sup-

plies the beat that drives every song.

A native of Ohio, who played in a cou-

ple of local rock bands before moving

Local Christian Rock Band, Waking Vegas, set to appear at Hometown Days

in the Meijer Community Tentto the mitten, is affectionately known

to his fans as “Animal.”

Lesley Howe completed the band

when she joined in late 2011. Her

smooth yet edgy vocals are the per-

fect fit to the group’s brand of Rock

& Roll. Having entertained crowds

as Radio Disney’s “Miss Firecracker”,

Lesley has also won various singing

competitions and has many credits to

her name as a solo artist.

Waking Vegas is currently record-

ing a new album for a mid-summer re-

lease and with a busy event schedule,

strives to maintain their “full time

work having so much fun”.

YOU CAN TRUST

Almost Unplugged, a 5-piece rock

band with a wide range of vocals,

will be rocking the crowd this year at

Hometown Days. The group includes

a 12-string, bass, drums, guitar and

keyboard. There’s even an occasion-

al mandolin thrown in by the guitar

player if he feels like changing it up

a bit.

You’re going to love the songs they

play that make you want to get up and

dance, laugh, have fun, maybe sing

along a little, and ultimately get into

the music!

The group has a wide range of influ-

ences including U2, INXS, Tom Petty,

Sheryl Crow, The Wallflowers, Elvis

Costello, The Fixx, The Pretenders

and more. You’ll enjoy their unique

and eclectic list of classic songs that

fans have really come to appreciate.

They’ll even mix in some recent in-

fluences such as Phillip Phillips, Muse

and Awolnation, songs that everyone

can enjoy.

Members of this group are Jim

ALMOST UNPLUGGED PERFORMSSATURDAY AT HOMETOWN DAYS

Hamady, Greg Wilson and Adam

Coolich, all from Flushing. Chris Ka-

zor and Karen Kazor are from Bur-

ton.

And why are they called Almost Un-

plugged? It all started when Greg and

Jim were jamming and Greg tripped

on his guitar chord (a surprisingly

common occurrence). “Jim, we were

just almost unplugged!” stated Greg.

So the name just kind of stuck.

This is a band that’s all about fun!

Arnold Amusements

S wartz Creek Hometown DaysA Big Thank You To Our Sponsors!

For almost 20 years, Arnold Amuse-

ments has been providing the thrill

and excitement at Swartz Creek

Hometown Days.

So what can you expect new this

year? For the very first time, Arnold

Amusement will introduce their all

new funnel cake product station. It

should be easy to follow your nose to

find this new carnival feature!

Making its re-themed debut at this

year’s Hometown Days, the Star Ship

3000 will be revealed for the first

time. This UFO themed ride will take

you spinning as the G-forces move

you up the wall.

Owned and operated by Ivan and

Agnes Arnold of Traverse City, Ar-

nold Amusements history goes back

to Ivan’s childhood.

Starting at nine years old, Ivan

worked every summer blowing up bal-

loons for a dart game at an area festi-

val. As soon as he was old enough, he

traveled on the road with that carni-

val. Soon he started buying his own

carnival rides to take to those events

and a few years later, Arnold Amuse-

ment was established in 1981.

Arnold Amusements is based out

of Traverse City, Michigan for ten

months each year. The Arnold’s chil-

dren are all active and not only work

in the business but also travel to every

show.

Sons Tom Arnold and John Ar-

nold are the Head of Operations.

Daughter-in-law Karen Arnold is the

Head of the Office and Food Opera-

tions. Karen is assisted by longtime

and like-family employee; Joey Even.

Grandson Alex coordinates and over-

sees the transportation of all equip-

ment and rides. Granddaughter Jil-

lian assists with food operations.

The Arnold family takes two

months during the off-season to re-

treat to their homes in Florida. Their

ARNOLD AMUSEMENTS

homes are all next door to each other,

all in a row. Ivan and Agnes will soon

be celebrating their 55th wedding

anniversary with their family. In the

past, their family has arranged for

special anniversary

dinners on the rides themselves.

True to their love of the amusement

business.

What makes Arnold Amusement

so special? According to Joey Even

“The Arnold’s truly have a family

owned and operated business. We are

together all the time, whether it’s on

the road, off the road, from Michigan

to Florida”. It’s all they’ve ever known

and they do it well.

Swartz Creek Hometown Days Hits High Gear With

Annual Car ShowYou won’t want to miss the 9th An-

nual 2013 Swartz Creek Hometown

Days Car Show on Saturday, June 1st.

This year’s event is brought to you by

Woods Collision. Larry Woods, owner

of Woods Collision in Swartz Creek,

is once again this year’s sponsor for

all of the Awards as well as the Dash

Plaques. The show will be held on the

grass along the east-west portion of

Fortino Drive.

Bring the entire family and enjoy

great food and music while you’re

there. Alexander J’s Restaurant will

be on the car show grounds, with a

variety of their great food to choose

from. Just like last year, you will de-

light in the aroma and tastes of their

great food selections. You’ll also en-

joy some great music as you stroll

throughout the car show. DJ Lane

O’Neill will once again be playing the

Oldies for us.

There is NO fee for Entrants or

Spectators. Free Registration will

be done on the day of the show,

with Dash Plaques given to the first

150 cars registered. Voting ends at

4:00 p.m. with awards handed out

at 4:45 p.m., including Best of Show,

Participant’s Pick and Chairman’s

Choice. We will again be giving

awards to the Best of Each Decade for

registered cars through the 1990’s.

As always, the spectators and kids

can vote with awards given out for

Spectators Choice and Kids Choice.

This is a bit hit, as last year we saw a

huge increase in their voting.

Join us to see the kids’ faces light

up when they see these great looking

cars!

To get to the Show: From I-69 take

the Morrish Road exit # 128. Then

go south on Morrish Road to For-

tino Drive. Entrance to the grass is

just around the corner from Fortino

Drive. The grounds are east of the

Post Office and east of the Fire Hall.

Call (810) 252-8800 with any further

questions.

end’s activities, go online and visit

A SilentAuction

With A Bang!

This year’s Silent Auction is proving to be a super event

with some really great deals! Many unique items will be

on display and are donated by local businesses.

If you see something you like, put a bid on it. Many

items sell for a fraction of what they are worth.

Don’t miss out! The Auction will be held in the Expo

Tent which is brought to you by the Swartz Creek Cham-

ber of Commerce. Auction Numbers are available at the

Swartz Creek Chamber Booth.

Join the fun! The Auction will be open beginning

Friday, May 31st at 4:00 pm and continue through Sun-

day, June 2nd at 2:00 pm.

100% of the funds that are raised go toward next year’s

Hometown Days Children’s Events.

Come on down and have some fun!

Ask Susie Kietzman what it takes to make a successful event and she will tell you how volunteers are the heart of the

festival. It’s a family affair, according to Susie, Hometown Days Volunteer Director. Susie oversees the volunteers at the

festival and ensures that every committee director has enough people to help with many activities, including setting

up and tearing down.

Susie’s team of volunteers include nearly all age ranges to help at the festival. From assisting seniors citizens with

their needs to helping children find misplaced parents, there’s no limit to what these folks are willing to do to help.

There are several husband and wife teams who help make

this a family affair. Assistant Volunteer Director, Chris

Treiger assists with the organization and planning for the

event while her husband Mike helps with the grounds and

maintenance. Laura and Maurice Poffenbarger and Tim

and Holly Walker can also be found helping with a wide

range of behind-the-scenes needs.

The directors and volunteers want to especially thank

the area businesses who provide food and beverages to

the volunteers, such as Chris & Marcia Passmore who own

and operate Tim Hortons in Corunna and Dewitt. Other

generous businesses who donate food include Subway,

Hank & Don’s and Donna’s Donuts.
