    winning after school programs(Crossroads and Circle of Courage),and collaboration with communityorganizationssuch as UVMExtension, and the NorthwesternCounseling and Support Services.On January 27th, SwantonElementary School will join otherFNWSU organizations to celebratethis honor at Mississquoi ValleyUnion High School. We are proud tobe a part of this prestigious awardand hope you will join us for this

    community-wide celebration from5:00-8:00 pm!

    Our standard for indoor recess is when the real feeltemperature is below 10 degrees Farenheit. Please DO sendchildren bundled for cold weather, as we check the conditionsthroughout the day and make the call right before recess. Sincethe weather can change throughout the day, please always sendyour child prepared for outdoor play. Teachers have other dutiesduring recess, so if your child is not well enough to go out forrecess, please keep your child home until they are healthy enoughto enjoy the fresh air. Thanks!

    Author, artist and former VTresident, Bonnie Christensen,visited the 4th-6th grade classroomson Monday, January 3rd. Thanks toour music teacher, Mrs. Ewell, Ms.

    Christensen visited SwantonElementary School as well as theother schools in our supervisoryunion, to talk about her latest book,Django:, Worlds Greatest JazzGutarist. Students were presentedwith a slideshow about Django andhis life as a gypsy. Mrs. Christensenalso answered questions aboutbeing an author/illustrator, andshared some of her originalpaintings from the book. In theirmusic and library classes, students

    have been learning about the lifeand music of Django Reinhardt, a

    Romani gypsy who was badlyburned at the age of 18. Using only2 digits on his hand to play theguitar, Django invented an entirelynew style of jazz guitar technique in

    the 1940s. Special thanks to ourlibrarian, Mrs. Oglesby for featuringbook talks about Django and Mrs.Messier, instrumental music teacherat Swanton Elementary, and Mr.Bowers, technology coordinator atMVU, for playing compositions byDjango during the presentation.

    Attendance Procedure

    Swanton Elementary School has anattendance procedure to ensurethe safety and optimal learning forall of our students. Vermont lawrequires schools to keep an

    accurate register of studentattendance. Students who arriveat school after 8:00 am will benoted as tardy in their studentrecord. Students who are not inschool will be marked either absentexcused or absent unexcused.Valid excuses for student absenceare illnesses, observance ofreligions holidays, familyemergency or other circumstancesasdetermined by the school board.If your child is going to be absent

    from school, please call before 9:30to let us know. If we have notreceived notice by 9:30, we will callhome or work to ensure that yourchild is safe. This will be consideredan unexcused absence. Parentswill be contacted if their child istardy or absent (excused orunexcused) from school more than5 days in any one trimester, ormore than 10 accumulated days in

    the school year. We will work withfamilies and any if necessaryoutside social service, health, orlaw enforcement partners toensure your child is in school on
