The beginning of the school year is

always an exciting time at SwantonElementary School! Here are just a

few of the events that are happeningin our school: Students and teachersare building their classroom

    communities and developing

    relationships through team building

activities that will allow students totake risks with their learning. Our

    garden is brimming with vegetables

that students are harvesting andselling to the Abbey to be served in

    our food program. Monarch

caterpillars create chrysalises andemerge as butterflies right in our

    classrooms. Students excitedly learn

the ins and outs of technology

learning through GoogleDocs, YoungWriters Project and Study Island.

Teachers gather beginning of the year

data on students in the areas of mathand reading to better inform their

instruction. The Three Bees fly in

to our first K-2 school assembly to

teach us about the core concept ofBELONGING and how to BE

    RESPECTFUL. Full day

kindergarten allows our youngestlearners time for a balanced program

    in a learning environment that

    promotes academics and guided play.

    A New School Year!

    Vision

    The SwantonSchool is a

    caring,responsible,respectful

    community oflearners. Our

    work, supported

    by inquiry andreflection,promotespersonalintegrity,

    citizenship andlifelong

    learning.

6th graders start their day by

stretching their math thinking duringAlgebra Corner.

At home, you may notice thechallenges of transitioning from

summer mode to school mode. Now

is the time to develop routines that

can support your students learningfor the year. Establish routines that

allow your child to be their best at

school include: a space andtimeframe to complete homework,

    time for reading independent or

together, a consistent bedtime routine(3-6 year olds need 10-12 hours of

sleep, 7-12 year olds need 10-11

hours of sleep, and 12-18 year olds

need 8-9 hours of sleep), time to readtogether, and a morning routine that

allows time for eating breakfast and

completing self-care habits dressing, washing face and hands,

    brushing hair and teeth, etc.

We look forward to a wonderfulpartnership together as we support

    our childrens growth as learners!

Thanks to our school nurse, Lynn

Lane, our school has received a

grant to provide fresh fruit andvegetable snacks throughout the

    year. Every Tuesday and Thursday,

all students receive an afternoonfruit or vegetable snack. The Abbey

is facilitating this program. So far,

our students have enjoyed plums, pears, peaches, grapes, and beans.

We are excited to promote healthy

fruit and veggie snacks for our

    students!
