The beginning of the school year is

always an exciting time at SwantonElementary School. The staff has been

busy getting our buildings ready for our

students and families. The custodial staff

did an amazing job over the summer, and the facilities look great. Our school

board has started their 2011-2012 school

year meetings. If you cannot attend, besure to watch on the public access

channel. Our PTO has also been hard at

work getting ready for a great schoolyear, as has all the support staff.

Our teachers spent their in-service daysworking on our writing initiative that

will be happening school wide this year. Some teachers and special educators are

also piloting a co-teaching model. Bothof these initiatives are very exciting, and

    will greatly benefit our students!

We have many new faces this year:

    A New School Year!

    Vision

    The SwantonSchool is a

    caring,responsible,respectful

    community oflearners. Our

    work, supported

    by inquiry andreflection,promotespersonalintegrity,

    citizenship andlifelong

    learning.

Please be sure to introduce yourselv

to these new faces when you see thin the buildings.

At home, you may notice the

challenges of transitioning fromsummer mode to school mode. No

the time to develop routines that ca

support your students learning for year. Establish routines that allow

child to be their best at school inclu

a space and timeframe to completehomework, time for reading

    independent or together, a consisten

bedtime routine (3-6 year olds need12 hours of sleep, 7-12 year olds ne

10-11 hours of sleep, and 12-18 yeaolds need 8-9 hours of sleep), time

read together, and a morning routinthat allows time for eating breakfas

    and completing self-care habits

dressing, washing face and hands, brushing hair and teeth, etc.

We look forward to a wonderfulpartnership together as we support

    childrens growth as learners!

Thanks to our school nurse, Lynn Lane,

our school is in its second year utilizing a

grant to provide fresh fruit and vegetablesnacks throughout the year. Every day, all

students receive an afternoon fruit or

vegetable snack. The Abbey is facilitatingthis program. If your student would like,

they can bring home their fresh fruit or

vegetable to try with their family. Pleasetalk to your student about this option.

We are excited to promote healthy fruit

and veggie snacks for our students!
