MATCH REPORT: taken from Chelsea Ocial Website. Posted on: Sat 03 Nov 2012

Summary Victor Moses with a second-half header gave the Blues the lead but a late Swansea equaliser means we slip from the top of the table on a wintry afternoon in Wales. The crisp, attacking football of much of this season was infrequently seen as the eects of recent games may have taken their toll and both keepers had an easy job in a near chanceless rst half.

Chelsea were better after the break and although Swansea were bright at times, once the lead had been established with a set-piece goal and Petr Cech had made a couple of saves, the three points looked London-bound, butSpaniard Pablo Hernandez nished a good move and we failed to win a league game in which we had opened the scoring for the rst time this season.

Team news With Juan Mata and David Luiz ruled out due to injuries sustained on Wednesday, Victor Moses and Cesar Azpilicueta retained their places and made their rst Chelsea league starts.Oriol Romeu also kept his place in mideld with Ashley Cole and Fernando Torres returning. Branislav Ivanovicmoved across to central defence.

Swansea replaced injured goalkeeper Michael Vorm with Gerhard Tremmel. Central defender Chico Flores had not recovered from a dead leg so was replaced by Garry Monk.First half

With Manchester United beating Arsenal in the lunchtime kick-o, Chelsea need to return to winning ways in the league in order to maintain our place at the top of the table. For much of the opening 45 minutes the signs didn't look too promising. There was never going to be the frequency of goals in this one as in the previous two matches.

Swansea full-back Angel Rangel made an early run outside of Cole and took a smart reverse pass from Pablo Hernandez in his stride but with opportunity to pick out Michu in a very danger-ous position, the Spaniard couldn't deliver and the leg of Ivanovic stretched out to cut it out.Oscar scued a Chelsea free-kick into the wall but a genuine Chelsea chance was a while in coming. On 11 minutes, Moses dropped a shoulder and won a corner that Torres was able to meet with a ick at the near post but Ivanovic just couldn't quite reach it sliding in at the far post, and the ball was cleared o the line by Leon Britton who had been stationed there.

At the other end, Michu couldn't make the most of a dicult volley chance when a cross found him between Ivanovic and Azpilicueta.Swansea were linking their passes better in the Chelsea half than we were in theirs. A long ball towards Torres fell back to Hazard just outside the area who took a touch but red over.Midway through the half Moses was unfortunate to slip on turf that had taken a pre-match soaking by the rain just asOscar and Hazard had passes through the centre of the Swansea side.Three minutes later, the lively Moses was played into space inside the area by Torres and clipped a cross back that was knocked out in the direction of Torrres. His header back lacked the necessary power to trouble the Swans' second-choice keeper. Chelsea had enjoyed our best ve-minute spell but then the home side pegged us back again and Mikel was sharp to block a shot by Ki Sung-Yueng. Swansea corners were survived before Chelsea improved towards the break.Hazard was looking our player most likely to spark something good and on 36 minutes a trip on him by Britton earned the Swansea midelder the game's rst booking, to the discontent of the home fans who felt Mikel should have seen a card a few minutes earlier.

The card count was evened up on 38 minutes when Azpilicueta fouled Davies inside the Swansea half.

Just before the interval there was a rare chance in this game for Chelsea to counter-attack into space. Hazard played a pass out to Torres but the striker was dispossessed inside the area.

Second halfRamires was a direct replacement for Romeu at the start of the second period, the Brazilian hopefully able to bring some forward momen-tum to Chelsea's play.

The rst thrust came without his involvement though as Swansea lost the ball on halfway which led to a Hazard run and shot, gathered lowdown at his post by Tremmel. Then Torres chipped a cross over towards the back post but Moses couldn't keep his header down. That was the best Chelsea chance so far.On 52 minutes it was Swansea's turn to break but diligent defending by Cahill with a vital tackle on Michu and then by Cole, kept Chelsea on level terms. Swansea, as at similar stage in the rst-half, were looking sharper in attack and Cech needed to dive at the feet of Michu as the home side passed through our defence.

Just before the hour, Britton fouled Oscar unnecessarily and with a well-struck free-kick, Hazard drew a diving save from Tremmel. From the corner that followed, Chelsea found the net.Gary Cahill, such a threat at corners ever since he joined the club, towered above the white shirts to head Oscar's delivery goalwards and Moses reacted quickly to nod it into the net, celebrating his second Chelsea goal with a slide in front of the Blues following behind the goal. Swansea responded strongly however. Cech saved a rst-time strike by De Guzman and soon after had to back-peddle and punch over a deceiving chip by substitution Nathan Dyer.Between those attempts, Roberto Di Matteo made his rst substitution with 72 minutes

played, Sturridge coming on for goalscorer Moses and playing wide on the right.

The main attempts on goal since Chelsea went ahead continued to come from Swansea and Ivanovic was in the right place at the right time to block from Hernandez as some lthy, wintery hail fell hard.

Ryan Bertrand replaced Oscar for the nal 10 minutes, the young Brazilian beginning to look drained by the games of the past week.Still Chelsea couldn't prevent the home side taking the game to us and the equaliser came with 87 minutes on the clock. It was a good move down our right, with the ball played in by Hernandez to substitute striker Shechter who turned to lay it back to Hernandez. From 18 yards out, he drilled the ball low into the bottom corner.

The closing minutes were more about preserving the point than restoring the lead with Cahill intervening to keep the ball out of the net near the end.

Pl Rang CleTremmel: 7.5/10

He’s settled in really well, at no fault for the goal and made a couple of good saves. His distribution is good and I hate to say it but he’s probably looked more assured than Vorm this season

Davies: 7.5/10

Once again he did very little wrong while playing against top quality opposition. Growing every game, he got past his winger with purpose at one point which was the first time I’ve seen him do that. More to come but so impressed with how he’s done.

Rangel: 8/10

I think people feel I’m overrating him this year but for me he’s been the best right back in the league and Leighton Baines probably only the better full back. Very solid at the back against quality players and got forward and linked up very well. His one two to tee-up JDG was one of the moves of the season.

Williams: 8/10

Back to his best. He just looks happier since he’s signed the contract. Strong, quick and far more assured on the ball. He looked relaxed on the pitch and on MOTD afterwards, who knew he could speak Spanish?

Monk: 8/10

What does he have to do to shut some idiots up? Always Mr reliable. I said at the start of the season that we would be really stupid to let him go and once again he proved his worth, Torres barely got a kick, he dealt with the ball well in the air. Just so comfortable.

Ki: 7.5/10

He wanted the ball more today and looks very comfortable on it, got caught a couple of times but he’s playing against quality, quick opposition. I think he brings a calming influence onto the whole team.

Britton: 9.5/10

too much? No. His best ever performance in his career and he only played 65 minutes or so. He was outstanding, the stand out player on the pitch. He just tidied everything up, I saw a stray ball but he was a delight to watch. I really hope Roy Hodgson watched it because with that performance he should walk into any squad.

Michu: 7/10

I suppose it was quite a quiet game for our stand out player. Up against two quality centre half’s which is never easy. He did well without being exceptional, held the ball up and brought players into play. He is better at that against the top teams than DG10

Hernandez: 8.5/10

or Pablo as we seem to be calling him more and more. He seems to have found some form and settled into the squad very well. His ball for Michu in the first half while running at full speed was only topped by his goal which looked better second time of watching. Great bit of trickery to get the chance and a great finish.

Routledge: 7/10

A quiet game by his incredibly high standards of late but he worked hard and stopped any attacks coming from the full back. Laudrup seems to have him and Pablo running down the same wing at times when breaking, very clever and deadly

JDG: 7.5/10

5 He’s making it very difficult to drop him at the moment and becom-ing a vital part of the first eleven. He’s quick which was very handy today in that midfield which was congested. Don’t wait till the end of the year to sign him, get out there and do it now Sir Huw.

Dyer: Forgot quite how quick he was, my god he’s scary at times. Nearly uked a goal and blew hot and cold like he does.

Graham: looked more condent to me when he came on than he has in recent weeks. Worked hard as ever, desperately needs a goal and nearly got the winner at the end.

Shechter: Played his part in the goal even if a bit fortunate. Be good to see him play for more than 10 minutes but I got to say I feel sorry for Moore at the moment

Laudrup: Fantastic, Brave substitutions. 9/10

Swne 1 - Cle 1 Stat n ChbordSo often when reviewing matches, the narrative in the media depends on the final scoreline, with last week against Man City, Swansea being 'brave losers' and Man City 'Doing what champions do' in grinding out a 1-0 win.

This week against Chelsea, Swansea again conceded around the hour mark but thanks to Pablo's well taken late equaliser took a point from the game. In most matches there are tiny margins between success and failure. Thanks in no small part to the efforts of the crowd, there was a huge change in momen-tum after the Chelsea goal as Chelsea largely looked to hold what they had.

The passing stats show the change after the goal, where before the goals, the figures were almost identical, the final half hour or so saw

Swansea's increase to 91% and Chelsea's drop to 82%.

Swansea made 50% more successful passes than Chelsea after the Chelsea goalThese passes from Swansea weren't just spraying it around at the back, going nowhere, there was a plenty of attempts to engineer possession within the opposition penalty area, in particularly by Pablo Hernandez who I think has really started to settle in the side in the last couple of weeks.

As can be seen by his chalkboard of final third passes after the Chelsea goal, there are plenty of similar balls played at a slight diagonal to someone just inside the penalty area. It won't work every time but when it does, it creates real pressure from the option of the recipient being able to turn and shoot or laying it back to someone on the edge of the area as happened with Pablo's goal.

Final Third Passes made by Hernandez/Swansea after the Chelsea goal, nearly all passes going towards the area came from Hernandez

With regards to other individual performances, De Guzman made more successful tackles (5) than any player (next highest was Oscar with 3) and was also the most fouled player in the match (5 times) and despite only

making one foul was himself booked (although more for the reaction than the foul). This was probably understandable given the number of niggly

fouls that Chelsea conceded without receiving bookings which certainly felt unfair, although rational evaluation tends to go out the window when 1

down and time running out.

Tackle activity and Fouls suffered by De Guzman, as well as this activity he also had the most attempts on goal by a Swansea player.

Ki Sung-Yueng had another impressive display making 62 successful passes from 63 attempts, it'd be a fair point to say most of the are lateral rather

than forward but like Allen last season, that's what he's there for, to keep the ball moving and to offer an outlet to his team mates.

Passing from Ki, including a perfect 2nd half (41 from 41)

The performances of the last week or so will be devalued to some extent how-ever if there is a weak performance against Southampton next Saturday. With Norwich and Wigan seemingly getting their act together, it is likely to become quite congested between about 8th down to edge of the relegation places, the

hope may be that Southampton and Reading implode leaving just one remaining relegation spot and the game against Southampton offers a chance to put some

real distance between us.

Swn10 History against Chelsea: Chelsea and Swansea have played each other 22 times since the Swans joined the League in 1920. The rst clash was on 21st November 1925 at Stamford Bridge, Swansea famously winning 3-1, the Swans having gained promotion to the 2nd Division after their Championship-winning season in 1925.

The rst game in 1925 was an exciting aair, and in front of a crowd of nearly 44,000 Jack Fowler, Billy Hole and Len Thompson scored to give the Swans a famous victory. The “Chelsea Chronicle” was full of patronising stu about “Gallant little Wales”. Welcoming the little club from Wales, the programme pointed out the appalling Swans’ away form (3 points so far) in contrast to their home performances. Chelsea were on a run of 14 games undefeated, so it seems fair to assume that they underestimated the Swans and were duly punished. There was a connection between the clubs, in that Swans’ manager Joe Bradshaw was a former Chelsea player, along with the Swans’ Scottish goalkeeper Jock Denoon.

The overall record reads Swans: W5 D8 L9 (including this weekend’s Liberty game). The teams have only met once in a cup tie, in the League Cup in 1964. All the other xtures before the Swans reached the Premier League have been in the 2nd Division (now the Championship). The last time Swansea were in the top ight (1981-83) Chelsea were a 2nd Division club.

(Little Known Fact: current Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard Jr. Played on loan at the Vetch for a season in 1995-96. He appeared in 9 league games and scored 1 goal away at Brighton).

100 Years Ago: Just a Welsh League away xture at Treharris to quicken the blood this weekend 100 years ago. The Swans of course still in the Southern League Div. II. The Support-ers’ Club had reached 300 members, and it was announced that a new stand would be built at the Vetch capable of seating 1,000 people!

the Chelsea gameClick here

Page 24: Swansea v Cheslea Jack Swan magazine

They seem to approach the game in a good way. A lot of promoted clubs play kick and run, but Swansea (at least last year, I haven't seen them this year) have tried to play proper football, and they've done it well.

I was disappointed with the lack of games McEachran got when he went on loan there last year, as I felt he could have certainly played more for you.

They'll stay up with any problem, probably comfortably mid-table. Above Liverpool hopefully.

When they rst got promoted I hated the idea of a welsh club in our main league but swansea have grown on me.

They way they have approached the league is a great example to all teams looking to get into the premier league that you don't have to change your philosophy once you are actually in it. Swansea have proved it is possible to come into the league and pass teams o the park.

I remember watching the arsenal game last year and in the 93rd minute when they were 3-2 up they were still passing it and refused to just lump it down the pitch and give possession back to arsenal like alot of teams would do.

I think they are easy on the eye, have a good football philosophy. They are obviously well managed as the last few managerial appointments have been progressive.

They raise there game for the big sides, especially at home, but can be a bit lightweight vs the lesser teams (much like Chelsea were before the Hoddle era).

I don't feel any animosity towards then, unlike Cardi.

Swansea have been fantastic, refreshing too, you often see promoted teams come up pry to play good football and get slaughtered but Swansea didn't. They'll comfortably stay up this year in my opinion and will probably nish higher than Liverpool. I agree above aswell I don't like Cardi but I like Swansea.

A great footballing side, lovely to watch and are good for the league. Michu looks a hell of a player and you have good organisation at the back.

I think the team will go through spells of playing really well, winning lots of games, and also runs of defeats due to the philosophy of the style.

I like Swansea, and they don't seem to be missing Brendan in the slightest.

GOOD CLUB....GOOD TEAM.....GOOD GENERAL FOOTBALL ETHIC.......GOOD SUPPORT.......Wont be able to achieve too much in premiereship due to funding.

Probably my second side in the prem.

The way they beat Arsenal last season was awesome. Great side. Look forward to a good game on the weekend.

I think they are a good team and play some decent football, but i'm going to be controversial here and say that they shouldn't even be playing in the Premier League, and if Cardi ever get in i will say the same about them too. A team representing Wales in the English Premier league will never sit right with me. I get annoyed when people say that clubs like Chelsea and Man City are ruining the English national team's chances but we have a Welsh team in the English Premier League full of youngsters from Wales, tell me exactly how that is helping the English national team ? I see no benets for the English national team by having Welsh teams in our league.

History dictates that they are allowed in, thats the way its always been with the FA back then! No other teams will get in from outside England now though. They are both exceptions

But the league has never been run for the benet of the England team anyway. Every club looks after themselves. In any case, Swansea have a Danish manager and most of their players aren't even Welsh. It's just a historical quirk that they ended up in the English league. There wasn't a signicant Welsh league until fairly recently, and they have been in the English system for nigh on 100 years now. They come under the English FA's jurisdiction and aren't even allowed to play in the Welsh FA Cup any more. Swansea have been up and down the divisions and earned their place on footballing merit. I don't see the problem.

As to Swansea, I quite like them. They're well run, they play good football and it's always good to see a promoted team do well (so long as they aren't called QPR or West Ham). Their open attacking style should suit us on Saturday, assuming we don't turn up expecting a stroll.

You lot seem to suer from a lack of discipline. Michu is one more card away from a suspension and the fouls where he's been carded have been of the lazy, needless variety. Nathan Dyer was famously brought on at the start of the second half, only to be dismissed within 13 minutes because he pitched a t at the ref and then made an awful challenge. Chico got a red because he tried to clear a ball above an opponent's head. That aside, I've been impressed with your play so far this year. I remember one match earlier this year where you strung together an absurd number of consecutive passes, something like 35 or 40 at least. Might have been against West Ham. I like what Laudrup has done and like the look of this year's team better than last year's. Replacing Sigurdsson with Michu was brilliant, it's just a shame you couldn't benet nancially from Sigurdsson's sale. Getting as much as you did for Allen was solid business and Laudrup's invested it well to bolster the squad. You were really in dire straights for a bit after Taylor's injury and Chico's suspension, but you came through it about as well as could be expected. I watched your match against Citeh the other day and felt you were really unlucky not to score a few more times. Denitely looked the better side. All in all, I've been impressed. I'm not sure why you were expecting abuse. You're not our rival, you play football that's enjoyable to watch and you just embarrassed Liverpool in their lthy hole. Looking forward to an exciting match tomorrow.

Simply you cant not like Swansea imho. Great side to watch, dont spend huge money but seem to be spending wisely. This year you could of fallen apart with second season syndrome and losing Allen and Sinclair but seems like you've pushed on.

I like the stadium as well.

Swansea are a decent side, lost a couple of important players in the summer but they've been well replaced. I must admit I was pretty surprised (denitely in a good way) when Michael Laudrup of all people came into ll Rodgers' shoes, but he started out very well, and anyone who can coach that kind of form out of Wayne Routledge must be doing something right. Looking forward to the game, although I do feel like Swansea are always capable of a result at home and are very much a team to be wary of. It will be very interesting to see how the possession battle goes.

I don't have any 'beef' with the Swans at all. Actually, I've been rather impressed with some of their performances and they have some players in their side that I hope will become big names in the near future.

No way I can see Swansea getting relegated any time soon, they play a good game and will keep us on our toes this weekend.

I don't mind Cardi to be honest. Noisy supporters make a good atmosphere and I'm sure a Welsh derby would be a welcome additional to the PL. Huge fan of Laudrup's and you play very nice football. Hope it is not nice tomorrow though but I expect i to be an open game and some goals as well. 2-3 Chelsea.

I hate Cardi, therefore Swansea are okay in my books. Like others I didn't want a Welsh team in the English Premier League but the football you play (and the fact it must p*ss o Cardi!) has changed my mind on the matter.

Think you'll stay up without too much problem, you may not set the world alight but if you establish yourself within the next few seasons, much like Stoke, and buy bigger and better players then who knows what lies ahead?
