ABOUT BALI

ISLAND

Bali is a beautiful island in the Asia-Pacific. Known as “The Island of the Gods,” Bali offers vast contrasts from seemingly endless stretches of coastline along its beaches to its lush green rice fields to its numerous majestic temples.

CULTURE

Bali culture is unique and famous especially for its rich and vibrant arts. Various forms of dance and music have made Bali's arts and culture scene one of the most diverse in the world. Hinduism as the main religion is the major influence behind its development.

Music, drama, dance and costumes become a feast for the senses during temple festivities. Rites of passage at Balinese family households can almost be seen daily, celebrating the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. Special cultural dates and highlights also mark the calendar, through annual art festivals and local revelries that visitors should check out to make the most of their visit.

LANGUAGE

Though Bahasa Bali is the local language spoken in Bali, Bahasa Indonesia is the most common spoken language around the tourist areas.

Helpful Words & Phrases in Bahasa Indonesia

- Good morning: Selamat pagi (S’LAH-maht PAH-ghee) - Good afternoon: Selamat siang (S’LAH-maht PAH-ghee SEE-yang) - Good evening: Selamat sore (S’LAH-maht PAH-ghee soh-ray) - No: Tidak (TEE-dah/)

- Yes: Ya (EEYAH) - Thank you: Terima kasih (Tuh-REE-mah KAH-see) - You’re welcome: Terima kasih kembali (Tuh-REE-mah KAH-see kem-BAH-lee) - Excuse me: Maaf (mah-AHF) - Excuse me (to get past): Maaf, permisi (ma-AHF, pehr-mee-see)

There are a few simple rules of etiquette that can be applied that will show our respect for local culture. You can also look to your guides for help along the way.

Expressing Anger

Outright anger is to be avoided in Indonesia. Indonesians lose respect for people who do not control themselves. If for any reason you feel you have been mistreated, try to resolve the matter in an amicable way. The first step is to politely express your dissatisfaction. Usually your host will strive to accommodate your request. If this strategy fails, the next best thing is to ask your guide to handle the issue. Remember also that the speaking of English is not yet a widespread practice. A lot of the staff in hotels have a rather limited scope of understanding. In order to not lose face, they will say ‘yes’ to anything you ask although they may not have understood a word. Speak slowly using simple structures and make sure they understood what you wanted. Generally, the employees at reception are the most proficient in English, and you can always refer to them for help.

Personal Contact

Religion is the soul of Indonesia; life rotates around religious ceremonies and temples, especially in Bali. You will see a drastic change in dress and customs between Bali and Java; one has a mixed Hindu/Buddhist approach to life where in Lombok and especially Java, Islam is predominant. Muslim women are not supposed to talk to or be seen in the presence of foreign men. You should also refrain from such gestures as putting your hand on somebody’s shoulder and especially the head or taking them by the arm, if the person is of the opposite sex. A slight bow of the head to express gratefulness is a nice touch. You will notice that there is very little physical contact between men and women in public, even when married. However, friendship among members of the same gender is freely expressed.

CLIMATE

Bali is approximately 8 degrees south of the equator. So you can expect a tropical, warm and humid climate all year around with two main distinctive seasons: Dry Season and Rainy Season. Its tropical climate creates an environment with temperatures that do not fluctuate much from one month to the next.

There are generally two monsoon seasons: A dry one (May to September) and a wet one (October to April). Monsoon refers to the wind, not the rain. However, even in the wet monsoon season, it is likely it will be sunny for a great part of the day.

CUISINE

Indonesian food is simply delicious – perfect for our raw vegans, vegans and vegetarians alike.

Indonesian cuisine is one of the most vibrant and colorful cuisines in the world, and bursting with intense flavor. It is diverse, owing in large part to Indonesia’s composition of approximately 6,000 islands, populated with over 300 ethnic groups. The variety of regional cuisines which exist are often based upon indigenous culture and foreign influences. As a result, Indonesia has over 5,350 traditional recipes. Indonesia's cuisine may include rice, noodle and soup dishes in modest local eateries, street-side snacks and finer dining establishments.

Swadhyaya Yoga School is happy to offer vegan and raw vegan options at Balé Tudor, including vegetable juices and smoothies.

YOUR TEACHERS

ABOUT MIMI

Mimi Adeogba loves traveling and teaching. She loves teaching about yoga asana, anatomy and physiology and the yoga lifestyle – and she wants you to love them as much as she does.

In 2013, Mimi left big pharma and went on a pilgrimage across Spain, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, where she experienced an awakening which would alter her course in life.

Later that same year, she embarked upon her first transformational yoga teacher training experience. The setting was Guanacaste, Costa Rica. She dedicated herself to following the path ever since (after all, yoga

totally transformed her life).

Mimi received training in Hatha yoga, Vinyasa flow, and Ashtanga yoga. Today, she occasionally incorporates Tai Chi into her classes, drawing from several years of South Shaolin Goju Kung Fu training she received from her father from early childhood.

For the past eighteen months, she has been teaching yoga anatomy and physiology, yoga asana and philosophy at Rishikesh Yogpeeth (RYP) in the world capital of yoga, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India, and at Affiliate Yoga Schools (AYS) with RYP in Italy, France and Bali.

Collaborating closely with RYP, Mimi designed and developed yoga teacher training curriculum and shared this information with yoga teachers from all over the world during their 200- and 300-hour yoga teacher training courses, leading to their certification with AYS - RYP.

From her experiences, Mimi was inspired to create destination teacher training courses in 2016, and Swadhyaya Yoga School (SYS) was born.

Mimi spends much of her time in India teaching when she is not creating SYS yoga teacher training courses.
