Clean water, basic toilets and good hygiene practices are essentialfor the survival and development of children. Today, there are

around 2.4 billion people who do not use improved sanitation, and663 million who do not have access to improved water sources.

Without these basic needs, the lives of millions of People are atrisk. For children under five, water- and sanitation-related

diseases are one of the leading causes of death. Every day, over800 children die from preventable diseases caused by poor water,

and a lack of sanitation and hygiene.

Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) Narmada team works in over 561Villages, 5 Blocks to improve water and sanitation services, as well

as basic hygiene practices. Apart from the overwhelming socialarguments, there are also powerful economic and environmental

reasons for improving Sanitation services for the poor. TeamNarmada has done extensively for achieving this milestone. We

District Profile of Narmada

Up to June 1997, three talukas of the district were part of the Bharuch district andone taluka viz. Tilakwada was under the Vadodara district. In October 1997, thisdistrict has been newly created. The district headquarter is Rajpipla. Earlier, thisplace was known as Nandipur. Now it is known as Nadod also. Nandipur wasolder than Patan, the old capital of Gujarat. After the fall of Gupt region, the

Nandipur area was captured by the Rajput of Bharuch. The mention of Nandipuras a capital had been seen on the inscription of Chalukya and Gurjars of Latregion. From the documents pertaining to gift of land or village (Danshasan),Akureshwar of (Ankleshwar) and Sangam Khetak (Sankheda) districts, it was

observed that the capital of the districts was shown as Nandipur (Nandipuri). TheGohil emperors of Nandipur had shifted to Saputara because of assassination ofKings of Gujarat. There, they had taken shelter under the tree of Pipla, a holy tree

and hence the new place was named as Rajpipla (14381457 A.D.)Then after about the period of about 150 years (one and half century) of middleera was considered of wars between Hindus Rajputs and Muslims emperors ofthe Gujarat (including Rajpipla) and Saurashtra. Hindu Rajput emperors of

Rajpipla, Junagadh, Kalawad etc. fought for their existence but because of lack ofthe unity between them, they were defeated by the Muslims emperors.

After the death of Aurangzeb, like other parts of the country in Gujaratalso the Mughal region, had become weaken and in the beginning of 13the eighteenth century Marathas emperors had come on power. ThusRajpipla had also come under them. Among Marathas, Gaikwads werestrong in Gujarat. In the beginning of eighteenth century, Versalaji I was

ruling at Rajpipla. After his death his son Jitsinhaji ruled up to 1754A.D. His rule was appreciable. During the governance of Pratapsinhaji,

the son of Jitsinhji Damajirao Gaikwad of Vadodara attacked onRajpipla and eastablished his right on half of the revenue. Later on,

after the death of Pratapsinh his son Raisinhaji came in power. He gothis nice married with Damaji Gaikwad and Gaikwad vacated his right on

the revenue but instead of He decided to give some fixed amount.Meanwhile, the younger brother of Raisinhji, Ajabsinhaji made a quarrelwith him for the power. Ajabsinhji got success and he became of ruler ofRajpipla. Ajabsinhji died in 1803 A.D. and again his two sons Ramsinhand Nisharsinh had a quarrel for the throne. With the help of army,

Ramsinh, came on power but because of his passionate nature he wasforced to vacate the throne and his son Pratapsinh was given the

power. But because of the allegation of Nisharsinh about Pratapsinhnotbeing the real son of Ramsinh Deputy Resident Vilebi was appointed tofinalize the case. As the decision came against Pratapsinh Nisharsinhwas given the power. But as he was blind, his son Verisalaji II was

declared as a ruler of Rajpipla. But he was minor. Therefore Vilebi wasasked to administer the Rajpipla state. He established peace andsafety. When Verisalji II became adult, he was handed over the

administration of Rajpipla. In the year 1859, with the permission ofBritish Government he appointed his son Gambhirsinhji as a co

administrator 14 of Rajpipla. But later because of clash between fatherand son about administration father Verisalaji II was compulsorily

retired.

With a view to run the administration of the State smoothly, it hasbeen divided into Districts, which in turn have been further subdivided

into Talukas (Tahsils). In the State of Gujarat, the communitydevelopment blocks are coterminus with the Talukas. The Talukascontain large number of villages and possibly several towns. Thevillages have Village Panchayats to run the local administration. AVillage Panchayat may constitute of one revenue village, several

revenue villages or a part of a large village. Similarly, the towns haveMunicipality or Municipal Corporation as the seat of local self

government.In the State of Gujarat, as on December 2009 there were 26 districts

and 225 Talukas, against 25 districts and 226 Talukas in 2001Census. In 1997 by several notification(s), Government of Gujarat

reconstituted some districts and talukas of the State.
