    SERVICINGShould your Smith & Wesson pistol require adjustment, repair or refinishing, we recommend mostsincerely that the weapon be r eturned to the factory. There is no other way to insure that th e workwill be done in a prope rly equ ipped and staffcdshop.

    Charges ar c very reasonable, being bascd onthc cost of pariS replaced plus a labor charge forthe t ime expended on the job. A labor charge forone hour is usually sufficient to cover all bu t veryextensive o\'crhaul jobs.

    INSTRUCTIONS FOR USEBefore proceeding to use this weapon, a word ofcaution is in o rd er . Thi s pistol is as safe to handleand usc as we can make it, bu t the re is no foolproof firearm. Be sure that th e muzzle is pointingin a safe direction at al l times, whether th e gunis loaded or not. Make safe gun handl ing a habit.To LoadMagazine capacity is 8 rounds. I f desired, an additional cartrid ge can be load ed in th e chamber ofth e BARREL. Release magazine by pressing magazine catch nut on le ft side o f f rame back of triggerguard. Hold MAGAZINE in onc hand with therounded or forward edge away from the palm.Place a cartridge on the forward cnd of th e FOLLOWER, press down an d to th e rear with th ecartridge head or base toward t he r ea r or flat edgeof the MAGAZINE. Succeeding cartridges areloaded in t he same manner, one on top of another.

    I f gun is to be fired immed ia te ly , p laceMANUAL SAFETY in upper or "fire" position.Insert MAGAZINE in butt unt il engaged withMAGAZINE CATCH. Simply press magazine intoplace - do no t drive in forcibly, as this pracfice mayin time cause distortion of magazine lips and resultan t malfunctions. Draw SLIDE all of th e way tothe rear an d release. The pistol may now be firedby pulling th e TRIGGER.

    If th e pistol is to be carried ready fo r action,place MANUAL SAFETY in th e low er or "safe"position before inserting M AG AZIN E an d draw ing SLIDE to th e rear. After releasing SLIDE putMANUAL SAFE1Y to upper or "fire" position,and th e p is to l may be carried ready for immediateaction. Note that this obviates the dangerous practice of lowering th e HAMMER manually with aloaded cartridge in the chamber . With HAMMERdown and SAFETY in "fire" p o ~ " i t i o n , th e first shotmay be discharged by simply pulling th e TRIGGER. The DOUBLE ACTION FEATURE cocksan d releases th e HAMMER in one opera tion as infiring a double action revolver. Subsequent shotsmay be f ired as in traditional automatic pistols.

    Upon firing th e last round, th e SLIDE STOPengages th e SLIDE holding th e action open. TheMAGAZINE may now be wjthdcawn and reloaded.To release th e SLIDE STOP press downward.When SLIDE STOP is disengaged, SLIDE wil lmove fo rward to normal position. I f it is desiredto continue firing, th e SLIDE may be left open anda loaded MAGAZINE inserted, in which case th eslide can be released by drawing th e slide rearwardto its limit and let ting it spring to hattery position.

    Note t ha t a cartridge in the CHAMBER cannOt be fired .when th e MAGAZINE is disengagedfrom th e MAGAZINE CATCH. This is a valuablesafety feature.

    When unloading a loaded pis tol, put MANUAL SAFETY in "safe" or low position. PressMAGAZINE RELEASE BUTTON an d removeMAGAZINE. Nex t, draw SLIDE to re ar, thus removing loaded cartridge from t he CHAMBER.

    The cartridges in th e MAGAZINE may be removed by pushing wrward on the head of eachcartridge until it is released from the MAGAZINELIPS.To Disassemble (Field Strip)I. Remove MAGAZINE by pressing MAGAZINE

    RELEASE E\UTTON on le ft sid e of FRAMEto th e rear of TRIGGER GUARD, and d rawing MAGAZINE out o f BUTT.

    2. Inspect CHAMBER to assure that pistol is notloaded.

    3. Put SAFETY in " fi re " or upper position.4. While pressing to left on right en d o f SLIDE

    STO P (abovc TRIGGER on right side ofFRAME) draw SLIDE t o re ar until RECESS int he low er left side of SLIDE is aligned withforw ard e nd of SLIDE STOP. Draw SLIDESTOP complctely from FRAME.

    5. Pull SLIDE forward off from FRAME.6. With SLIDE upside down, compress RECOIL

    SPRING an d lift out RECOI l SPRING GUIDEASSEMBLY.7. Remove BARREL BUSH IN C by rotating lower

    port ion toward l ef t s ide of SL'DE and drawingforward out of SLIDE.

    8. Remove BARR EL by l if ting rear end back andout of SLIDE.

    No further disassembly is recommended, as th epistol may be properly cleaned an d lubricatedwhen field-stripped as described above.To Reassemble1. Replace BARREL in SLIDE.2. Replace BARREL BUSHING.3. Replace RECOIL SPRING and RECOIL

    SPRING G UID E ASSEMBLY, making surethat RECOIL SPRING GUIDE BUSHING isengaged in th e small radius cu t in barre l lug andproperly centered. Fai lu re t o c en ter properlywill leave RECOIL SPRING GUIDE prot rudin g from BARREL BUSHING after assembly.

    4. Replace SLIDE on FRAME, depressing EJECTOR an d SEAR RELEASE LEVER in turn, sothat SLIDE wil l travel to th e rear ov er them.When slide stop cut on SLIDE is a ligned withslide stop hole in FRAME, insert SLIDE STOPand allow SLI DE to return to forward position.

    5. Replace MAGAZINE.

    Care and CleaningPistols should be field stripped ~ n cleaned atreasonably f requen t i nt erva ls to insure properfunctioning.

    Use any good c o m m ~ r c i a l s olv en t. a nd afterdenning, luhri{"atc sparingly wilh a light "eightJ.!un oil. Outside surfa t:es may be rroretted fromcorrosion by coaling l ight ly with a rust inhibitin}.:oi t or grease.
