ECO ART AND SCIENCE FAIR We are so excited for the upcoming first an- nual eco art and science fair. Our young art- ists have been working very hard under the watchful eye of Mrs. Keltika who has orga- nized the Eco art event. Her creative collec- tive group will be displaying their art work in booths set up throughout the school. As well, each class has created eco art that will also be on display. Mr. Vial took the initiative to organize the science fair with a focus on the environment. We look forward to welcoming the school community to spend an evening appreciating the creative minds of our staff and students! Please don’t hesitate to contact the school with any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Mrs. J. Bake Goods Galore

The grade 8’s held our first baked goods sale of the year and what a bake sale it was! Right up to the last minute students and parents were bringing in all kinds of good-ies. A big THANK YOU to all the grade 7 and 8 students and their families for the time and effort in preparation for the BAKE SALE. On Wednesday, April 16th we raised approximately $1,200 to-wards the grade 8 grad trip to Camp Kawartha. Congratulations to all the winners of the cake raffles. Hopefully, you enjoyed your delicious treats. We would also like to extend our apprecia-tion to our volunteers Mrs. McCorkell, Mrs. Loffen, Mrs. Wherry and Mrs. Wadsworth. We could not have done it with-out you!

Way to go Mighty Oaks!!!

It was a wonderful sight to

look out our office windows

one day to observe kinder-

garten students with note-

books and cameras in hand

as they were learning how to

discover science in our front

garden. They were excited-

ly taking pictures and

sketching things that they

observed.

MAKING MUSIC The grade 1 and 2 classes, un-der the direction of Ms. Rob-erts, have been rehearsing sol-fege scales and arpeggios. After practising for four classes they successfully mastered it.

Follow the link below to hear their glorious voices.

On another musical note…

On Monday, May 5th, the GECDSB's annual celebration of music education will once again flood downtown Windsor with chords and clefs, notes and naturals. Our Suzuki grade 4's will be singing at this Massive Music Monday that brings together hun-dreds of young musicians and vo-calists from all grades to sing the praises of their music lessons from noon until 1:30 p.m. at the Festival Plaza in Dieppe Park. The Coalition for Music Education has been be-hind this national celebration for the past decade and the GECDSB has always tuned up and joined in to unite Canada in song.

Grade 4/5 and 5 Classes Have a Heart

Thanks to the teamwork of Mr. McGregor and Mr. Vial who orga-nized their students to raise money for Cancer as well as for our out-door garden. They held a Looney Licence Day and were able to raise over $400 in just one day.

Well done !!!

SIPSA … What’s Happening POW

POW continues to chal-lenge students to be the best mathematicians they can be. Weekly problems present stu-dents with a challenge to use math skills from the five math strands and come up with crea-tive ways to answer the problems.

The Who … Winners

The most recent win-ners of POW were Mr. Froese’s grade 2/3 class and Ms. Keltika’s grade 8 class. They demon-strated exemplary meth-ods of problem solving.

The What...

Mrs. Sofos-Giamos was especially pleased with her class and how they problem solved. She has been encouraging them all year to use the problem solving model to help them pull apart the question and come up with rea-sonable answers. In April, she was espe-cially pleased with one of her students, Ifadeyo. He demon-strated how he could rise to the challenge of answering one of the weekly POWs and was congratulated by Mrs. Fairall and Mrs. Tullio. He was so proud that

he was beaming from ear to ear.

The Where

Our bulletin boards show some great math thinking. The students stop by and check out for themselves what the highlights were that merited the work to be put on display.

Mighty Oaks Track and Field

The Suzuki Track and Field season is up and running. Conditioning workouts for students in grades 3 to 8 take place daily during first Nutrition Break. Our 2nd An-nual Suzuki School Track Meet is scheduled for Friday, May 16th at the University of Windsor track from 8:30 am until 1:45 pm. Students will be bussed there and back. Parent volunteers are asked to help their own children get to their events on time that day. Except for extremely hazardous weather conditions, this event will take place rain or shine. This meet will be used to pick our school track team. The city track meet will take place on Monday, May 26th and the District Finals are scheduled for Friday, June 13th. Go Mighty Oaks!

Acorn Award

April Assemblies … Earth Day and Student of the Month

EARTH DAY

We know how to celebrate Earth Day in style at Dr. Suzu-ki School. Thanks to Mrs. Morris and Mr. Vial, the stu-dents and staff were thor-oughly entertained and learned something about our carbon footprint within our school.

It started with an excellent dramatization put on by some of our students followed by a demonstration of some of the things we are throwing away in our recycle bins. It was an

eye-opener and a reminder to all of us of how we should be mindful of how we recycle.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

In April our focus was on envi-ronmentalism and citizenship for Student of the Month. Con-gratulations to all the students who were chosen.

We also presented our Smartie Pants awards. Mrs. Bhanks class all achieved their goal and couldn’t wait to sign her pants...

blies teachers

proudly wear their

Smartie Pants

where they can showcase how many

students in their class have signed the

pants. The first month we honoured

84 students and this month we hon-oured 92 students .

The students are very excited about

this new award and they have been

known to ask their teachers when

they can be tested.

We are very proud of the commit-

ment our students are making to

earn their award and we especially

want to thank Mrs. Annisette for an-

other great idea!!!

Congratulations Mrs. Annisette!

April’s Acorn award went to

one of our staff members, Mrs.

Annisette. She is responsible for

coming up with the idea of the

Smartie Pants awards.

Each classroom teacher sets a math goal for their students.

For example, Mr. Carroll’s grade

3 class were required to know

their multiplication facts from

0x0 to 7x7 as well as know how

to divide backward from 49

orally. Each teacher based the

goal on the curriculum expecta-

tions for their grade. Once the

student has achieved the goal

they have earned the opportuni-

ty to sign their name on the

teacher’s ‘Smartie Pants.’ On

the day of the monthly assem-

SUZUKI GREEN POLICE WANT YOU!

Mrs. Morris thought it’s time to find out which classrooms (including the office) are being Eco Warriors. Are you wondering what an Eco Warrior is? Read on...

Starting the last week in April, ‘Green police’ were out in full force saving poor innocent re-cycling and compost from ending up in the dreaded garbage. The Green police (students in grade 4 - 8) are checking each classroom and keeping track of how well each class is doing at recycling and composting. They also are making sure that what is in the garbage is actual-ly garbage. Signs hanging from door knobs each day will indicate whether the class needs improvement or whether they are ‘Eco Warriors.” The winning class will be announced each week and get to choose a prize like a new piece of sports equipment or cool game for their classroom. This is a school-wide competition to see which class is the most Eco Friendly. We hope they are up to the challenge! Make sure to encourage your child to be an Eco Warrior at home too.

This and That

MaDonald’s Night

is Back!

the hours of 4 and 8, all Suzuki

families are encouraged to visit

the McDonald's on Wyandotte,

en to all students prior to this

date, 15% of all sales made dur-

ing this time will be donated to

the Grade 8’s for graduation.

Every penny counts, so please

consider staying for dinner or

even picking up a little some-

thing at the drive thru.

Muskoka Chairs Draw

On May 7th, the night of our Art

and Science Fair, a draw will be

held for a chance to win these
