Welcome back to term 2. I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday and are ready for another 10 weeks of challenge and progress.

The highlight of term 1 was the Studio Spectacular Concert in March. What a wonderful event. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and happiness. It was a display of the Suzuki Community coming together for a special concert and sharing the love of music.

All the students were well prepared by their teachers and the results were outstanding.

Thank you to all the teachers for being so involved not only on the day but working hard in your teaching studios with your students.

A huge thank you to Rachael Gomez for comparing the concert. As usual Rachael was amazing and came up with so many innovative ideas. There was always something special in-between the items. Her energy and enthusiasm was very infectious and created an atmosphere of fun.

The String Family were also another highlight of the afternoon with their versatility of different styles.

Thank you to all the students and parents who spoke during the afternoon.

Special thanks to Therese O’Brien for all the organising and running of the event. There’s a lot of preparation in these concerts and it all went smoothly.

Term 2 promises to be another exciting time. The first Graduation Concert for the year is on Sunday June 4th. This is being held at Concordia College. Please bring your friends along to witness another wonderful concert.

The main event for the term is the Winter Festival starting Thursday 20th July-Saturday 22nd July. This is being held at Concordia College.

The applications are due in two weeks Friday 26th of May. Please book early so you receive the early bird fee. The Enrolment Form is at the back of this newsletter.

The visiting Teachers are Sachie Yuki from the Gold Coast for Violin. Everyone will remember her from last year. She’s lots of fun and full of energy. Fran Firth from Sydney for Cello who was very impressive with her parent talk and teaching skills.

Itsuko Bara from Sydney for Piano. Itsuko was very popular with the piano students and parents last year.

There is also a String Workshop Sunday June 25th and a Piano Concert on the same day. This will be held at Concordia College.

Another event will be the Showcase Concert early in term 3. The auditions however are due in term 2 Friday 7th July. For students wishing to apply the Audition Form will be in this newsletter. Please arrange the Audition Performance to be sent to the Suzuki Office by a you tube link. This makes it much easier for the Adjudicator to watch the applicant’s performances.

I hope to see you all at the Concerts Workshop and Winter Festival in July. As usual we will be needing volunteers to help organise the Festival. We’d love to hear from anyone who can do something no matter how small.

Have a wonderful term.

In April I went to the Suzuki Music Festival in Sydney. At the festival I went to group cello lessons with Carey Beth Hockett from Los Angeles, played in the Orchestra and had Technique classes with Therese. My favourite things at the festival were group lessons and an individual lesson with Carey. She did lots of fun things with us like teach us the rhythm and moves of ‘I want a glass of ice cold water’ from Cold Water Cannon, pull faces when we were playing and balancing hair ties on our bows whilst playing Allegro.

We stayed in Sydney for 10 days so we did some other things like going to the Aquarium, Taronga Zoo, the Museum, see a play at the Opera House, climb the Pylon Lookout on the Harbour bridge, go to the Gym in the Hotel and watch a Rugby match. I really enjoyed watching the game because it was the first live Rugby match that I had seen and my favourite team South Sydney Rabbitohs were playing.

In April I attended the Suzuki Conference in Sydney. This was a very special opportunity for me to observe the visiting Piano Teacher Ruth Miura from Barcelona.

She graduated from the University of California. After completing her American studies she trained in Matsumoto for over two years with the Piano Teacher Trainer Mrs Haruko Kataoka. She worked extensively with Dr Suzuki and Mrs Kataoka as their translator for the European Suzuki workshops and the World Conference in Berlin between 1981 and 1993.

It was such a wonderful experience watching Ruth teach. Her attention to the smallest detail was always displayed in every lesson. She devoted a lot of time to each student

paying full attention to the student’s listening ability. She was very patient in waiting for them to observe what she was wanting them to firstly observe then play.

It was very inspiring watching her work with the children and always focusing on their listening skills. She kept referring to the need to play the Suzuki CD every day and stressing the importance of the parent to take on that responsibility. She was always mentioning good tone and spent many repetitions with the students teaching them how to produce the best tone possible.

She gave us an article by Dr Kataoka which I think is very interesting. (Below)

Ingredients: the Ability to Select the Best - By Haruko Kataoka

From the Matsumoto Suzuki Piano Newsletter Vol.8 No.3, August 3, 1998 | Translated by Chisa Aoki | Teri Paradero | Edited by Karen Hagberg | Illustrations by Juri Kataoka

When we think about preparing delicious food, the first most important thing is having the best ingredients. It is common knowledge. We hear about this important requirement even on television cooking shows. Ingredients must be the best, the freshest. Old, bruised, or dried up ingredients cannot be transformed into a wonderful meal even by the most skilled master chef.

Why is it, then, that we do not choose the most natural, fresh, and delicious tone when playing a piece on the piano? Tone is the basic ingredient when playing a piece, and yet everyone ignores the quality of their ingredients and seems to focus only on the tasks of learning notes and memorizing.

Let us research the most important ingredient: tone. In the case of food, we use our sense of taste to judge quality. With piano music, we use our sense of hearing to determine whether or not a tone is good (natural) or bad (unnatural). Every single day we must use our sense of hearing to develop the habit of listening to tone with concentration. Always listen, savoring with great care the tone that you make and the tone that others make. In doing this, we develop the ability to differentiate between the heartfelt, wonderful sound of music and the sound of a collision (in other words, bad tone).

A little advice at this point: to become proficient at playing the piano, we must nurture the habit of listening with great care. In order to develop our sense of taste for food, do we not eat delicious cuisine from many different sources? It is the same with the sense of hearing. First of all, listen to recordings of performances of the great masters. Search out really the best performances, in the same way you would search out fine restaurants, so you can become a person with the ability to choose really good, musical tone.

Humans are born with many potential abilities, but we must put in effort in order to develop them, otherwise they are useless to us. Our sense of hearing is one of these physical abilities. Practice listening with concentration every day, with your eyes closed and with a calm heart and mind, so that you will develop an ability that you can count on when you need it.

Without being able to listen, we cannot understand the quality of musical ingredients (the sound of music; musical tone), nor can we understand a performer’s interpretation of a piece or their skillful technique. (Someone without a developed sense of taste cannot judge the skill of a chef.) The practice of listening must be developed very carefully and from the time one is a beginner or it cannot be learned. After the ears themselves are trained to listen something more happens: you begin listening intuitively with your heart and soul. As a result, you begin to be able to add feeling and power to your natural, good sound. It is the same with cooking.

The chef creates a wonderful meal by using the best ingredients along with the heartfelt desire to give people a wonderful experience with food they can savor. It is the same with music. Just as a chef exercises his or her culinary skill, we must gather good sound to be able to perform a piece expressively, from the bottom of our heart, so no matter who is listening (or eating) they come away being revived and lucid, able to face the next day with new vitality. Furthermore, children, who are living the most wonderful, impressionable time of their lives, carry their experiences with them until they die. They thrive on the best nourishment.

People inevitably tend to be impressed merely by the size and scope of a job and lose sight of the quality of ingredients or the way things are put together. We neglect to put thought and research on the first stages of an endeavor.

We have the joy of experiencing wonderful music. With gratitude, let us think about good tone.

Since I met and played with Jo Quail I’ve been more motivated to play my cello and practice. We had a few rehearsals with Therese before meeting Jo so that we would be able to play with her confidently when we first met her. Everyone worked very hard so that we could show Jo our enthusiasm and potential. We had few rehearsals with Jo and in one of them she let everyone try out her electric cello. Jo’s Cello was enjoyable to play as we also used her special loop pedals to be able to create and compose music on the spot. The concert was amazing to play in and I really enjoyed playing the pieces that were given to us. Overall the experience that Jo Quail gave me and the others was motivating and amazing. Thanks so much Jo for sharing your amazing talent.

The Top Five Ways to Motivate Your Kids To Practice - By Edward Obermueller

Practice Motivator #4

Should I correct him? What if she does it wrong? When I know he’s playing out of tune, what should I do? What do I do when I try to give constructive criticism, but she just argues or pushes back?

If you are experiencing resistance from your child over your involvement in practice, it may be because your child is perceiving it as criticism. This can create a “negative feedback loop” where the child begins behaving in a way that he or she knows will distract you. It might involve arguing, acting lazy, running around, or becoming overly chatty. You then double down on the “pay attention!” verbiage, or trying to “enforce” the continuation of the practicing in some way. But then things get worse as the child gets upset and soon is unable to practice or learn.

Err On The Side Of Affirmation

Understand: When our children act lazy, silly, tired, or argumentative, it is merely an avoidance strategy. Kids will resort to these tactics when they feel incompetent and don’t know how to express that verbally. What they need most at that moment is affirmation, not critique.

Think about it. If you had someone nitpicking your every action at work (maybe you do!) would you perform at your best? Imagine while cooking a meal, you were interrupted every couple of minutes by someone standing over your shoulder saying, “No, not this way, THAT way” or “You’re not doing that right.” It would not only be inefficient, but you would be discouraged from continuing to be involved with it on a daily basis.

When this kind of negative feedback occurs, remember to err on the side of affirmation. Leave the critique to the teacher, at the next lesson. You and your child will both be much happier for it, and you’ll be surprised at how many problems you thought you needed to fix, end up ironing themselves out.

TRY THIS

• Focus on being present rather than on “fixing” things. (see Practice Motivator #3)

• Ask curious questions. Instead of making critical statements, focus on finding a question to ask about their playing, one that is open ended and allows them to process what is happening on their own. Some good questions to start with: - What are you feeling right now? - What do you think is going on right now?

- Do you think we can ask your teacher about that next time? - What in particular is making you happy/impatient excited/frustrated? - Can you play it one more time for me? - Do you like anything about this music or this piece? - What specifically?

• Go away from the practice area. Sometimes your child is merely seeking space. Do this especially if you find yourself unable to stop focusing on what is wrong.

• Gently suggest that the child listen to the piece again (especially if there is a persistent error that the child seems not to want to acknowledge). Rather than arguing, listening together is a great way to solve a disagreement. (See Practice Motivator #2)

• Reward the practicing. Kids need tangible, concrete evidence of good behavior. Keep tallies on a chart, use stickers, and the occasional treat. Reward the fact that practicing happened even if it did not go well.

• Find 5 good things. See if you can think of 5 affirming things to say about the way the child is playing at that moment. Help your child by asking her to do the same. This will help her reframe her frustration and regain motivation.

REMEMBER: We don’t live in a world of affirmation. As adults we are surrounded by very negatively critical thinking patterns. Therefore this is may be a hard habit to break. Children can start very early picking up anxiety and perfectionism from trying to “be the best.”

In this context children can easily begin to view music as something to survive . The goal becomes “get to the end of the piece” rather than enjoyment and sharing musical expression. That’s not a very nourishing state of mind.

You do your children a great service in life if you can help them to love and affirm themselves in their efforts, in all the small ways they succeed. When you err on the side of affirmation you will cultivate a more generous heart in your child, and in yourself. You’ll hear that come out in the music, and more importantly, you’ll see it positively influencing every area of your life.

For the rest of The Top Five Ways to Motivate your Kids to Practice (by Edward Obermueller) Keep an eye out for our next newsletter!

Suzuki SA’s annual Showcase Concert is a spectacular celebration of South Australia’s rich and diverse Suzuki program. Students from every instrument and of all ages and abilities will perform in the groups and ensembles included in the program. The Showcase Concert is also a special opportunity for the more advanced students to perform either as a soloist or part of a small ensemble. To be a featured soloist or small ensemble member, the student must submit an audition recording.

Auditions for Solo and Group Items

Students currently studying any instrument with a registered Suzuki teacher and who are current members of the Suzuki SA Association may audition to perform as a featured artist in the Showcase Concert. Students must be studying the Suzuki Method on this instrument in order to audition. Soloists and small ensembles (no more than 12 players) are all welcome to audition. However, all students must be advanced in their studies. A minimum standard of Book 6 is required for each soloist or member of the ensemble. A time limit of 6 minutes will apply. Repertoire can be either Suzuki or non-Suzuki. Teachers are required to be involved in the audition process, making sure those students that do apply to audition are playing at the very high standard expected of this formal concert.

Audition applications close on Friday 30th June and no late auditions will be accepted. All Applications must be submitted by email to [email protected].

2017 YouTube Video Auditions

All Showcase Auditions will be by video. Recordings must be submitted via YouTube link. Auditions must be video rather than just audio recordings. Audio recordings will not be accepted for consideration. The piece presented must be as intended in the final performance – with an accompanist if required and with any cuts or changes included. The audition tapes will be timed during the audition review to make sure the time limit of 6 minutes is not exceeded. Students are required to supply their own accompanist. Please include a copy of the full score to share with the adjudicator.

Audition Review

Audition videos will be reviewed by a panel whose decision will be final. Students will be marked according to style, musicality, ensemble, tone, accuracy and general presentation.

Audition results will be emailed out to all applicants with enough time for successful applicants to prepare for the event.

Application Process

Audition costs are $45 per item. Please fill out the form below and return it to the Suzuki Office c/o Abbie Mills ([email protected]). Include the YouTube link and a copy of the score, may also use dropbox).

We ask that all applicants also submit a short biography of the performer(s) plus a high resolution photograph that can be used in the program should the applicant be successful. The biography should include such information as the age of the child, how long they have studied music, their school, any awards they have won through their music and any other interests or hobbies they might have. The biography should be written in 3rd person and be no more than 150 words in length. The Showcase committee reserves the right to cut or edit student’s biographies to fit within the scope of the published program. Photos must be submitted via email to the Suzuki Administrator.

Return the application form, payment, the recording and the biography and photograph to the following address by 30th June, 2017. Payments must be made via Bank Transfer before the due date to enable applications to be auditioned.
