A good suturing technique with stabilizing incisions ensures proper hemostasis, primary healing and optimizes the functional and esthetic outcome of surgical procedures. Suturing techniques are important in dentistry since general practitioners perform minor surgeries such as simple and multiple extractions or open flaps for surgical access of root tips, extraction of third molars, etc. This one-day course includes lectures, a demonstration and a hands-on component to educate and train general dentists in basic surgical and suturing techniques. Course experts will teach participants how to approach basic flaps and demonstrate various suturing techniques that may be immediately implemented into practice. The Saturday morning session includes lectures that will explore suturing techniques in detail and will compare different suturing materials discussing the advantages, disadvantages and applications of each. Course experts will explore the basic principles of surgical techniques and describe several types of flaps. Following the lectures, a demonstration of various suturing techniques will be performed, followed by hands-on exercises using pig bellies and mandibles. This hands-on experience is designed to reinforce information provided in lectures and will help course registrants develop their technical skills to achieve optimal surgical and suturing outcomes. Participants will have the opportunity to observe and ask questions during the procedure. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: Perform, with confidence, various interrupted and mattress suturing techniques. Differentiate types of suture materials and identify their clinical applications. Perform conservative/minimal flaps with appropriate incision design and manage the tissues atraumatically. This program will be of interest to: Dentists (general practitioners) Division of Continuing Professional Development SUTURING AND SIMPLE SURGICAL TECHNIQUES: HANDS-ON TRAINING WITH ANIMAL MODELS
