Udo Steffens President

For more than 50 years, Frankfurt School of Finance & Management

has been a leading business school in providing professional, academic, and executive education to managers, executives and financial institutions. Within the framework of the new Frankfurt School – the UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance we are proud to present our two Summer Academies for 2012. Each Summer Academy offers you plenty of opportunities to learn, to gain new insights, and widen your scope – both from our well-experienced faculty and academy educators and from networking with other participants.

Frankfurt School launched the Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy in 2010 in strong recognition of the financial sector’s crucial role in integrating climate considerations and sustainability into their operations. Together with UNEP, we decided to offer an additional Summer Academy in Nairobi, Kenya to address the rising demand for climate friendly solutions on the African continent. Whereas the focus of the programme in Frankfurt will be of international scope, the Nairobi Summer Academy will have a strong regional focus.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Summer Academies in Frankfurt and for the first time in Nairobi!

Achieving a low carbon, resource-efficient economy will require the scaling-up of private sector investment into clean technology applications around the world. In this

context, UNEP has worked for the past 17 years to facilitate interaction between public and private sector financiers, aiming to build capabilities and raise awareness regarding clean technologies. UNEP assists potential financiers to understand and assess the level of risk and the potential returns associated with such green investments. 2012 is the UN International Year of Sustainable Energy for All, which aims to highlight the need for the world’s governments to focus attention on clean technology investment, and to build the necessary links with the private sector. For this reason, we are very pleased to support the Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy, hosted this year at UNEP’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and delivered by Frankfurt School – the UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance. This event provides an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about the global need for climate finance and the potential benefit from clean technology investment.

In UNEP’s 40th year, we look forward to hosting you in Nairobi.

Welcome to the Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academies 2012!

This year, the Frankfurt School – the UNEP Collaborating Center for Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance (The Centre) is delighted to offer two courses: one at Frankfurt School’s premises in July and one at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi in October. The Summer Academies will provide decision makers and project developers with a comprehensive framework on renewable energy and energy efficiency financing projects to meet the necessary understanding and actions for successful investments in clean energy technologies. Both 5-day training courses on Sustainable Energy Finance are coordinated and implemented by the Centre. Experienced senior trainers and practitioners will combine both academic-technical RE/EE and banking knowledge.

About the Organiser

For this reason the Centre is committed to facilitating the necessary structural change of energy supply and use around the globe by helping to catalyse private sector capital flow towards investments in sustainable energy and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Located at Frankfurt School, the Centre combines research of the highest calibre with an orientation towards practical application all the way to the final project implementation. By implementing findings and instruments in the field where they will be most effective, the Centre will maximize its knowledge base and grow into a leading think tank on this topic.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY FINANCE SUMMER ACADEMY

The following key topics are covered by both Summer Academies:

Climate change & policy negotiations The purpose of this topic is to understand the causes of climate change and its impact and economic costs. Recent trends in environmental policies and regulations concerning climate change will also be covered according to the needs of the participants, including possible solutions and an international political framework.

Sources and instruments of financingProject finance and its sources is a key pillar for a successful project or programme outcome. Therefore, its principles in regards to public, private and carbon markets will be discussed in depth, and case studies of private and state banks, international organisations, private funds and other sources of finance will be presented. This session will be based on real case examples and schematic presentations to provide a thorough understanding.

Project analysis of different types of RE/EE: Risk identification & allocation, cash flows and financial modellingThis topic of the seminar is one of the central points of the Summer Academy and will provide methods and hand-on tools to set up RE/EE projects. There will be a deep project analysis of the different types of RE, i.e. wind, solar/solar thermal, biomass/biofuel, hydro and geothermal. Accordingly, project cycle risks identification

and allocation as well as cash flow models and financial modelling will be also provided and explained.

Real-life case studies in industrialised countries, transition countries and developing countriesDuring the entire week, real-life case studies will be introduced accordingly. At the end of the week, a complete example-package of sustainable energy projects will be presented and discussed among the participants who again will be able to contribute with their own professional experiences.

Moreover, participants are given the opportunity to attend a panel discussion on current SE developments and to present their projects or institutions at our “Institution Fair”.

Specific topics for Frankfurt: Trends and markets for sustainable investments Legal issues: Laws, regulations and insurances Carbon Finance: Certification & market (CDM, JI) Overview & structure of RE/EE project finance in

industrialised, transition and developing countries

Theoretical and practical orientationAll trainers have extensive experience in the field of sustainable energy finance. Through the course they will provide knowledge with a clear hands-on focus tailored to the needs and realities of developing, emerging and industrialized countries. In order to offer both theoretical and practical expertise the trainers will be comprised of PhD professors and experienced financiers. To deepen the theoretical understanding real-life case studies from different regions and continents will be discussed throughout the presentations. In addition, to facilitate a more tangible experience field trips are planned that will complement the classroom curriculum.

Integrated knowledgeThemes and topics will be delivered via a mixture of lectures, discussions, group work, case studies and, field trips. Each component is carefully designed and led by an expert in the respective field. An experienced facilitator will guide the participants through the programme and he will link the topics to each other.

NetworkingThe programme gives participants the opportunity to get in touch with other practitioners of sustainable energy finance. To support networking after the end of training, the programme provides an FS Alumni network that will enable participants to stay in contact easily and to foster discussions that started during the course. To continue honing their skills, the participants will be able to access training materials, exchange experiences and ideas, and broaden their professional network.

Discussions with relevant stakeholdersThe latest developments in financial markets and their impact on sustainable energy finance activities will be the topics of different presentations and panel discussions. Speakers from international finance institutions will provide insights and share views and ideas with the participants, thereby further enriching the programme.

This programme will discuss approaches to financing sustainable energy projects and how these transactions differ worldwide: Industrialized countries, transition countries and developing countries. During the course of the programme, our presentation tools will focus mainly on lectures, discussions, case studies and group work. In general every single method will make the course as participatory as possible. Some of the main approaches can be described as follows:
