Our vision at Burrtec is to create environmental solutions for our

customers through sustainable programs and responsible

handling of the material we collect. Our efforts not only reach

our customers, but extend to our employees as well as the

communities in which we serve. We believe that what is good

for Burrtec communities, is good for Burrtec. As industry

leaders, it is important to Burrtec that we remain experts within

California regulation and legislation regarding recycling, refuse,

and the environment. We share California’s passion for the

environment and want to work together on focusing on the

needs for future generations here in California.

Construction & Demolition Recycling

With the Assembly Bill 341 now in effect, Burrtec is taking an aggressive approach to educate customers as well as employees on these

new regulations. Businesses who produce more than four cubic yards of trash per week are now required to recycle, and jurisdictions will

need to implement a program that includes education, outreach, and monitoring. The regulations also allow for phased-in implementation.

Jurisdictions are required to report on their education, outreach, and monitoring efforts, and, if applicable, on any enforcement activities or

exemptions implemented by the jurisdiction. With AB341, Burrtec has created new commercial recycling programs that drive toward

sustainability and zero waste.

Burrtec has expanded its construction and demolition processing capabilities in order to dive deeper into the c & d waste stream and to

further prolong our supply of natural resources. Burrtec will assist costumers with local ordinance requirements, LEED certification, and

CalGreen building standards as well as guarantee mixed c & d processing diversion rates.

Burrtec took over operation of the Burbank Recycle Center in January of 2012. The Burbank Recycle Center houses a Materials Recovery

Facility, Buyback (CRV) /Drop-off Center, Used Oil Center, Compost Corner, and Learning Center.

East Valley Transfer & Recycling

The East Valley Recycling and Transfer (EVRT) facility was purchased in April 2012 and is the newest addition to the Burrtec family of

facilities. The facility is located on 6.12 acres at 1150 & 1250 South Tippecanoe Avenue in the City of San Bernardino. Together, the

buildings cover 125,000 square feet and are permitted to accept 900 tons per day. The facility is capable of processing and/or

transferring commingled recyclables, construction & demolition, green waste, mixed metal, mixed waste, organics and solid waste.

East Valley Recycling and Transfer has created new jobs, efficiencies for collection routes and a much needed outlet for material

collected in the region.

Inland bio energy – anaerobic digestion

Burrtec has recently created a team to focus its efforts on sustainability within our company. The GREEN TEAM introduces new

sustainable programs each quarter to each of our offices through a quarterly newsletter.

The Inland Empire Utility Agency (IEUA) built a fully operational dairy waste anaerobic digestion plant in Chino, CA. Due to a lack of

biogas production, the IEUA Board shut down the anaerobic digester in early 2009. The IEUA has since determined the best use of the

facility is for a food waste anaerobic digester and leased the facility and operation. Burrtec has partnered with Environ Strategies to form

Inland Bio Energy (IBE). IBE plans to become a regional solution for commercial and industrial food waste that will go through the

anaerobic digestion process to produce energy.

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that produces a gas principally composed of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2)

otherwise known as biogas. These gases are produced from organic wastes such as livestock manure, food processing waste, etc. The

process of anaerobic digestion consists of three steps: The first step is the decomposition (hydrolysis) of plant or animal matter. This step

breaks down the organic material to usable-sized molecules such as sugar. The second step is the conversion of decomposed matter to

organic acids. Finally, the acids are converted to methane gas.

California is encouraging the development of technologies that divert organic waste from landfills and comply with the Global Warming

Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32). AB 32 calls for the reduction of greenhouse gases and the use of low carbon fuels, and solid waste

landfills are a significant source of greenhouse gases due to decomposition of organic material in landfills into methane.

Overall, Californians throw away more than five million tons of food waste each year. A food establishment, on average, disposes of

more than 50 tons of food waste each year. In order to divert food waste away from our landfills, Burrtec has started a food waste

collection program that uses composting and anaerobic digestion to process the organic material.

Organic material collected from participating establishments is taken to one of our facilities where it is mixed with green waste to produce

nutrient-rich compost. The complete process takes approximately 90 days. The final product can be mixed with existing soil to stimulate

healthy plant growth.

In addition to State regulations that require all

cities and counties to divert 50% of material

generated from local landfills, Burrtec will assist

with local ordinance requirements, LEED

certification and CalGreen building standards.

Burrtec is a one stop solution for your

construction and demolition material; we’ll take

care of it all or meet specific needs. Burrtec will

partner with customers to develop on-site

solutions, provide equipment, transport the

material, process the material and administer all

the reporting needs and requirements. According

to a 2008 statewide characterization study by

CalRecycle, construction and demolition (C&D)

materials accounts for about 30% of the waste

stream in California. Many of these materials can

be reused or recycled, thus prolonging our supply

of natural resources. Common construction &

demolition materials include lumber, drywall,

metals, masonry (brick, concrete, etc.), carpet,

plastic, pipe, rocks, dirt, paper, cardboard, or

green waste related to land development.

Burrtec provides waste assessments through our Environmental Coordinator Staff that customizes each commercial customers zero

waste initiative needs. If a customer would like to reduce their trash by creating recycling programs within their business, Burrtec staff can

assess which program is best for the customer.

The State of California has set a goal of 75% diversion of recyclable materials from the landfill by the year 2020 through source reduction,

recycling, and composting.

AB341: With the Assembly Bill 341 now in effect, Burrtec is taking an aggressive approach to educate customers as well as

employees on these new regulations.

Businesses are now required to recycle, and jurisdictions will need to implement a program that includes education, outreach, and

monitoring. The regulations also allow for phased-in implementation. Jurisdictions are required to report in the 2012 Electronic Annual

Report (due Aug. 1, 2013) on their initial education, outreach, and monitoring efforts, and, if applicable, on any enforcement activities or

exemptions implemented by the jurisdiction. With the emerging of AB341, Burrtec has created new commercial recycling programs that

drive toward sustainability and zero waste.

sustainability within their own businesses. Burrtec offers a variety of training to ensure each customer is successful with their zero waste

initiative program.

Material Recovery Facility (MRF)

Burrtec’s material recovery facilities sort

and process recyclables. With the increase

in the amount of recyclables being

discarded, material recovery facilities play

an important role in the process of

collecting recyclables to redistributing them

to third-parties to reintroducing them to the

general public. Burrtec is constantly finding

new material to divert from landfills though

the use of our material recovery facilities.

Natural Gas Refuse Trucks

Environment

Natural gas vehicles generate fewer exhaust and greenhouse gas emissions than their counterparts. Burrtec has transitioned over 160

diesel fuel trucks to natural gas trucks. Burrtec recently installed CNG fueling stations of our own at various locations.

Natural gas is one of the most widely used forms of energy today. It is commonly used to heat and cool homes and businesses

nationwide. In addition, more than 180,000 natural gas (compressed and liquefied) vehicles, including over 3,000 refuse trucks and one

out of every five transit buses, are operating successfully today. Natural gas’ popularity stems in part, from its clean burning properties.

Since transitioning over 160 trucks to

CNG, Burrtec has installed CNG fueling

stations at various hauling yard locations.

Synthetic Oil

Conventional lubricants are refined from crude oil. Synthetic lubricants, on the other hand, are chemically engineered to form pure

lubricants. Synthetic lubricants contain no contaminants or molecules that don’t serve a designed purpose. They are made from

molecules that are saturated with a higher percentage of carbon-hydrogen bonds, leaving few sites to which other, harmful molecules can

attach and attack the molecular composition of the oil. By converting to synthetic oil, Burrtec has significantly reduced engine oil

consumption.

Burrtec recognizes that 30%-40% of organic compostable

waste ends up in California landfills each year.

Californians throw away virtually 5 million tons of food scraps

annually. While green waste material collection programs have

been implemented throughout California, increasing food

scrap collection for composting would provide additional

opportunities to help meet the State’s recycling goals.

Compost brings nutrients to the soil, prevents erosion and

conserves water, which helps support germination of seeds

and new plant growth.

Residue Reduction campaign

In select communities, Burrtec launched a study and residue reduction campaign commencing in March 2012. The campaign goals were

to increase public education regarding proper recycling and lower contamination rates, thereby improving the City’s diversion efforts.

Christmas tree recycling

Burrtec will collect and recycle residents’ Christmas

trees at no additional charge. Trees are then recycled

and turned into mulch to avoid landfill disposal.

Each Other

The safety of our employees and the communities we serve is at

the core of everything we do. Burrtec understands that there is a

direct correlation between health and safety programs, our

sincere concern for each other and employee job satisfaction,

moral, innovation and teamwork.

Our facilities operate in a manner to protect the health

and safety of employees and users. Our facilities Injury

and Prevention Program (IIPP) is always available for review by

local and state inspectors. Materials that are provided for

personal safety include gloves, safety glasses/goggles, particle

masks and steel toed boots/shoes. Shovels, absorbents and

containers are provided for control and containment of spills.

All CAL-OSHA regulations are observed. Safety equipment,

including fire protection equipment and protective clothing, is

maintained at each facility. Employees in high traffic areas are

required to wear personal protective equipment, including hard-

hats, eye protection, high-visibility shirts or vests, gloves and

protective footwear. All facility personnel are required to complete

a program to perform their respective duties in a way that

ensures compliance with applicable requirements.

Each quarter Burrtec brings together key leaders from all

our operations to review any incidents, present best

practices and create standardized processes. We value

the ideas of each employee and these meeting are also

a forum to share feedback from our employees and

safety committees. At Burrtec, our employees are

something instilled in our culture and practiced by all.
