Energy Savings

Light up the room

Dematic offices in Australia have been busy replacing lighting in several facilities with energy efficient LEDs. In 2018, all lighting at the Belrose, Australia, site, including offices, bathrooms, and even car park lighting were upgraded.

The office was previously lit by fluorescent tubes - two in each of the 650 panels in the office - which were inefficient, had short lifespans, and were not particularly bright.

On top of that, there was an incident where a smoldering component in one of the panels set off the fire alarms after overheating. This happens because fluorescent lighting can produce high levels of heat.

Replacing the 1,300 tubes throughout the office buildings with LED panels has several benefits. The company will save $23,000 a year on energy costs, plus another $56,000 on yearly maintenance costs from constantly swapping out expired tubes.

Of course, it’s not all about the money; this exercise has helped significantly reduce Dematic’s carbon footprint, saving each year:

• Office: 95 tons

CO2 = 4,700 trees

• Car park: 24 tons

CO2 = 1,200 trees

• Kitchens, toilets etc.: 66 tons

CO2 = 3,300 trees

And as you can see, they look better, too!



Energy Savings

LED Car Park and Loading Dock Lighting

We identified 31 x 400-watt Metal Halide flood lights in use around the Belrose, Australia, facility consuming nearly 58,000kWh per year. The electricity used to operate, was generating approximately 61 tons of CO2 per year.

The site selected 100-watt LED Flood Lights as a suitable replacement in the driveway areas and 150-watt versions for the loading dock. This has reduced the site’s energy consumption in these areas to 15,600kWh per year, saving approximately 45 tons of CO2 emissions or roughly 2250 trees.

Under pressure

As part of the ongoing review of equipment and processes in our Australian factor, Dematic retired three old compressors, which had been working hard for more than 30 years!

Compressors supply air power to the roll-forming, paint, and welding process lines, so they need to work hard and reliability is crucial. The old compressors were using about 10% of the total electricity consumption on site, replacing them with newer, more efficient equipment was sure to help Dematic reduce its environmental impact.

The two oldest units have been replaced by a single new unit. Its main feature is that it uses a variable speed motor, allowing the unit to adjust its output to meet the air demand curve and reduced peak electrical demand.

Overall the new equipment has provided several benefits:



Energy Savings

Based on this, Dematic will save over $40,000 a year with the new equipment. What a great improvement!

Heating up the building

An uninsulated building loses, heat which results in more energy consumption to maintain the building temperature.

The installation of a thermal insulator keeps rooms warm in the winter and cool in the summer, serving as a convenient method to increase energy efficiency. This led Dematic to supply and install 600x600x100mm insulation bags above the first-floor ceiling of our Sydney facility.

Eco-zhou

At the Dematic Suzhou facility visitors are noticing how the ripple effects of small actions can be extraordinary.

A series of projects have been implemented to achieve sustainable development targets. This facility, located in China, have completed a series of energy-saving measures, including:

• The use of a barcode scanner for goods receipts and issue logs to save on paper products.

• The full utilization of steel sheet and profile steel. Scrap is used to manufacture small parts and the correction of non-conforming components.



Energy Savings

• The replacement of fluorescent lighting with LED lighting.

• Improvement of electricity consumption by the designation of eco-officers who are responsible for turning off lights and shutting down machines.

These result-oriented initiatives generated a 50% energy reduction in these offices, as well as a decrease on steel consumption for re-working processes.

Compressing our consumption

Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) are devices that improve the energy efficiency of a system. Also, these devices reduce the stress on mechanical and electrical components resulting in an optimization of the compressor and limiting the failure.

As a 2019 initiative proposed by the Suzhou facility, air compressors will be replaced with VFD-controlled compatible devices which are expected to reduce energy consumption by 60%.

A brighter future for North America

Small changes can bring big benefits… This is why Dematic’s North American sites (Salt Lake City, Utah and Monterrey, Mexico) have upgraded their lighting in their shop, offices, and outside areas to the LED variety resulting in a 90% power savings and a significant life prolongation compared to incandescent light bulbs. This also helps decrease costs. In addition, LEDs are made of non-toxic materials (unlike neon lighting that use mercury, which may pose a danger to the environment), recyclable and considered “green”, or earth-friendly.

Energy misused cannot be excused

People often forget to turn off the lights, resulting in energy waste and increased power costs. In the Salt Lake City, Utah, location, all switches in offices, closets, conference rooms, and restrooms have been replaced with motion sensors.

Smart and green, right?

Fast and Furious

Also in Salt Lake City, Utah, the overhead door in the shipping/receiving department has been converted to a high-speed door. This will lead into energy savings by reducing the time that the building is exposed to outside temperatures, minimize the heating and cooling energy losses.

See Change System

In Adderbury, UK, Dematic has identified an intelligent energy monitoring system to help reducing kWh consumption. This system allows the identification of energy savings in the region of 20%.

In addition, it will allow staff to easily monitor the demand (kVA) through each HH (Half Hourly) meter.

The final part of this project is due for completion in: Q3 2019

German sites, fully committed to joining the green side

In Offenbach, Germany, the air compressor has been replaced with a more powerful and energy efficient compressor. At the office site of Augsburg, Germany, air conditioning has been replaced, adding energy efficient to the facilities.
