Sustainability Days 20219 & 10 November

- MDU students, agents of a sustainable worldwww.mdh.se/en

Welcome! For the first time, Mälardalen University will arrange two cross-disciplinary and cross-academic days, where activism, the arts and academia meet. No matter what you study, don’t miss this event!

After your studies you will work in a world that plac-es high demands on you in terms of new skills and abilities. You will need to be able to tackle the com-plexity of contemporary society where ecological, social, ethical and economic issues interplay and often compete.

The Sustainability Days will hopefully inspire you to develop the curiosity, critical thinking and creativity necessary to navigate that complexity and be an actor of a sustainable transition.

Part 1. In the first part we have invited national and international speakers to show us how architecture, illustrations, plans of action and projects can be used to deal with contemporary issues. No matter what you are studying, let yourself be inspired by the methods the speakers use to contribute to a more sustainable future. This part will be in zoom and is open for everyone (students of all years, MDU employees and external guests).

Part 2. This is an interactive part for first year stu-dents.

Part 3. The day continues with a program which is specific for UKK- and EST- students.

Keynote speaker Diala Brisly- Paintings for hope

In 2012 Diala published her first illustration. It portrayed a child that had lost a leg and an arm in an explosion.

“I was suffocating, and it was a way for me to breathe, to ex-press what is happening”, Diala explains in an interview. Sin-ce then, she has helped many children to deal with their expe-riences of war as well as benefitting herself. For example, she paints  murals together with children in refugee camps and at art therapy workshops.

Conflicts and war are  destructive forces that destroy ef-forts  concerning sustainability, equality and education. And always, the ones who suffer most are children.

In this talk Diala Brisly, a Syrian artist and activist, describes how she provides children with a voice. By painting both for children and with children she opens the lines of communica-tion, which is not just about war, but also about hope.

Diala Brisly is an artist and activist who fled Syria in 2013. She now lives in France where she continues to be active.

Keynote speaker John Palmesino Territorial Agency, London

- Climate peace

The irreversible impact of humans on the Earth has brought scholars to identify a geological era - the Anthropocene - which is characterized by the extermination of ecosystems and by spaces in deep and rapid transformation. John Palmes-ino from Territorial Agency will show us, through his work at the crossroad of art and science, the reality of the impact the humans on our planet. But he will also challenge our way of viewing the world as a political entity and address the need for new negotiations and diplomatic encounters. That is what he calls an “architecture of peace”.

John Palmesino is an architect and urbanists. Together with Ann-Sofi Rönnskog he has established Territorial Agen-cy, an independent organisation that combines architecture, research and advocacy to address the complex transforma-tions of the Anthropocene epoch. They have been awarded the Grand prize of the European Commission honouring Inn-ovation in Technology, Industry and Society stimulated by the Arts. Recent projects include Oceans in Transformation, in collaboration with TBA21–Academy, Sensible Zone, the Museum of Oil with Greenpeace, Anthropocene Observatory with HKW Haus der Kulturen der Welt, North, and Plan the Planet: They teach at the AA Architectural Association School of Architecture, London.

Jeremy MeteyerZero Waste Stockholm- Why do we need to reduce waste to achieve a sustainable society?

In Sweden we produce almost 500 kilogram waste per person and year! And that is just waste produced by households. Al-though we are quite good at recycling, we are also consum-ing more, which means more waste. What if we could find a way of reducing waste all together?  From rethinking product designs to new refillable and reusable packaging models, Zero Waste Stockholm will present some solutions to prevent waste at the source.

Zero Waste Stockholm mission is to inspire Stockholmers to reduce their ecological footprint and the amount of waste they generate. We see waste awareness as a first step on the sustainability journey.

Jeremy Meteyer is one of the co-funders of Zero Waste Stockholm. He is working as a system simulation engineer and develops projects around waste prevention. Jeremy is passionate about building sustainable systems, growing pumpkins and writing articles about waste topics.

for sustainability? (in Swedish and English).

- Education and sustainability. Marina Bergman, Lärum

Part 2First year students: How can I as a student engage in a movement for sustainability? Welcome to a discussion about how we, students and teachers, can contribute to sustainable devel-opment. This is a unique opportunity to learn how other students, studying in other field than you, view their future. This could be the first step towards your own contribution, engagement and even career?

14.15-15.00 Statsvetarprogrammet (GKV06)

Article presentation: ”The Role of Public-Private Partnerships in Housing as a Potential Contributor to Sus-tainable Cities and Communities: A Sys-tematic Review” (Session in English)Artikelpresentation; ”Rollen för offentlig-privata partnerskap inom bostäder som en potentiell bidragsgivare till hållbara städer och samhällen: en systematisk översyn”Terence Fell och Johanna Mattsson, MDU.

Abstract: Today cities face the increasing negative consequ-ences of the unsustainable course society is set on. Climate change, biodiversity loss and increasing spatial segregation are testament to this. The effects of these issues often exceed the coping capacity of individual urban housing developers. Thus, an antidote to the current neoliberal trend must be found in collaborations such as public-private partnerships (PPP). Here the shortcomings and limitations of PPP and its po-tential ability to solve the problem of unsustainable urban de-velopment are investigated. Using the Doughnut Economics (DE) model as a general guide, a systematic literature review is conducted. The results reveal evidence that PPPs are unjust and exclude local actors from collaborations. Hence, resident participation and inclusion is considered the best strategy for PPP to evolve as a future guarantor of the sustainable city. First, however, major differences in the character of issues that connect the global model of sustainability to the harsh reality of the local context need to be addressed. This gap con-cerns the city’s social foundation and ecological ceiling. The DE model applied herein is an excellent tool to test the scope and depth of local collaborations such as PPPs and reflect on international treaties such as SDGs.

14.15-15.00 Högskoleingenjörsprogrammet i energiteknik (GHV01) Civilingenjörsprogrammet i energisystem (YCT01)
