Sussex Heritage Trust Awards 2016

design for the future, respect for the past

A warm welcome to you all on the occasion of the 18th Sussex Heritage Trust Awards.

The Awards scheme was launched this year at the Rathfinny Wine Estate, Alfriston. As a 2015 Award winner, the Estate is a fine example of high quality conservation and rejuvenation, and demonstrates the wide

variety of projects which have been entered for the Awards since 1998.

The annual Sussex Heritage Trust Awards operates across the two counties, presenting hand-crafted slate plaques in recognition of excellence in heritage conservation and innovative design.

In 2015, the Sussex Heritage Trust awarded 24 plaques and 23 Highly Commended certificates. As always we received a great number of entries in the Small Scale Residential category, so in recognition of this we introduced a new category in 2016, the Mid-Scale Residential Award. This category covers restoration, conversion or new-build projects of two to ten units.

2016 continues to be a busy one for the Trust. We announced the Bursary Scheme earlier in the year and have now awarded three bursaries to the next generation of craftspeople. The Scheme is funded by the Historic Houses Association and other generous donations and marks a new partnership with the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum. The scheme is still open

and application forms for bursaries can be obtained from the Sussex Heritage Trust office.

In May 2016, we were guests of our President, The Rt. Hon. Lord Egremont DL and Lady Egremont, for a tour of Petworth House and the walled gardens. The gardens, designed and restored by Lady Egremont, saw Sussex Heritage Trust Friends and supporters enjoy a private tour taking in a series of “rooms” within the walled gardens.

I look forward to announcing the winners of the 2016 Sussex Heritage Trust Awards and to again taking the opportunity to thank our generous sponsors, donors and judges. Without this support the Awards, and indeed the Trust, would not be able to exist: thank you to each and every one.

Good luck to all those who submitted entries this year.
