“Cancer”

By Emeli Espinal

When my mom passed away from

cancer, she said, “Do not stand at

my grave and forever cry. I am not

there; I did not die.”

Don’t be afraid of cancer,

Cancer is so limited,

Cancer cannot cripple love,

Cancer cannot shatter hope,

Cancer cannot corrode faith,

Cancer cannot eat away peace,

Cancer cannot destroy confidence,

Cancer cannot kill a friendship,

“I Hate Mom”

By Janari Newsome

I hate you for lying and raising me

by yourself. I hate that I’m seeing

you every place that I need help. I

hate the way you laugh and yell at

me outta spite. I hate the way you

sound when you get home at night.

I wanna run away and I would if I

had the heart. I’d rather just not

see you and leave you, for once, in

the dark. I hate you so much and

I’m not thankful at all for you.

You’re giving me nothing to work

with at least you could give me the

truth. It’s not okay to call me and

say you’re not coming straight

home. It’s not okay to leave me just

waiting besides the phone. This

mom-daughter relationship is not

what it’s meant to be. The bond’s

been broken for years since you

stopped doing what’s best for me.

Both my parents are failures,

please just get me out of here. I

need to run away from them before

I run out of years. I feel embar-

rassed by you when my friends

come to spend a night because

you’re out partying and throwing

away your life. I can talk about

this forever believe me I have time.

But you’ll deny everything, any-

way. Don’t worry mom, I’ll be fine.

Cancer is just some stupid disease,

That never had to exist.

Cancer took away my mom’s life

but for me,

Mami is still alive.

R.I.P. Mami

gic practice sessions before the contest.
