Latvia is a keystone of Northern Europe’s prosperous Baltic Sea region. Latvia’s political, economical and cultural centre is in Rīga, where more than one third of Latvia’s popula-tion (644 thousand) lives and works. Rīga’s elegant Old Town and distinctive Art Nouveau architecture serve as a stimulating setting for a vibrant modern business and cultural life. Founded in 1201, this former Hanseatic League member is one of the oldest medieval cities in Europe and has been listed by UNESCO as one of the world’s most important cultural and natural sites..

Historically Riga has been a city with rich cultural life, so no wonder, it has earned the honour to become the European Capital of Culture 2014.

• Freedom Monument, 1 Brivibas iela. Freedom Monument is one of Latvia's national sym-bols. The statue of a woman holding three stars at the top of the monument represents Freedom embracing Latvia's regions.

• Old Riga - Of course, the Old Town of Riga, its heart, is its pearl! While wandering in the Old Town or in the blocks of Art Nouveau architecture, you will find numerous restau-rants and cafés.

• Spīķeri creative quarter and promenade - A 25-minute walk from the Old Town south-ward along the Daugava river takes you to a place with a creative and historic atmo-sphere. Together with the Central market, the place provides for a rather different expe-rience from that of the Old Town.

• The smallest Art Nouveau restaurant in the world Coffee Tower, Tērbatas iela 2f.• The Art Museum Riga Bourse (Rīgas Birža) Doma laukums 6, is located in the Riga Bourse

building that is an architectural monument of national importance. The museum offers to experience interrelation between East and West, as well as a dialogue between the classics and modernity.

Tourism in RigaThe largest Tourist Information Centre is located in Melngalvju nams (House of Blackheads, Rātslaukums 6) in Old Riga.
