SURVEY OF 'HILLS. PINE PLOTS

NORTHERN REGION

SEPTEMBER 1984

SURVEY OF "HILLS" PINE PLOTS - NORTHERN REGION

D.R. LEJEUNE

1. INTRODUCTION

In the decade 1960-1970 the Forests Department commenced a programme aimed at replacement of part of the native forest with pines.

A circular letter from the Chief of Division Plantations 17/10/67 stated inter alia:

"The evaluation of a site for afforestation with pines in any area requires trial plots of key species grown to an age at which the pine growth may be assessed and the results correlated with factors of site. This takes time and it is vital that a programme of trial plot establishment to test all potential sites be implemented without delay". In fact, many plots were established prior to 1967 particularly in Mundaring Division.

This survey covers a total of 66 plots in Mundaring, Jarrahdale and Dwellingup Divisions. It becomes obvious that not all plots were established with the experimental objective in view. Some are at old settlements and some are to reforest dieback sites. The objective is not always clear.

In Dwellingup and Jarrahdale there are known to be areas of pine neither classed as plantations nor recorded as plots. These have not been covered in this survey. They will, in the near future, be recorded on plan.

Winter burning of plots has been practice for some years at Mundaring only. Where they have not been burned they are at serious risk when burning adjoining forest. They are a source of worry for staff and at times considerable time has been spent protecting them. This should not proceed indefinitely.

In the early years after planting, records were generally well kept. However, as interest waned in the prospect of replacing native hardwood with pines, silvicultural and fertiliser treatments tended to lapse. There was generally no follow up of fertiliser trials. The question arose in the minds of many: "What have we learned and what is the future of these plots into which so much expenditure and effort has gone?". That really underlines the purpose of this survey.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THIS SURVEY

2.1 To assemble the important information and observations for all plots in a number of copies of one document so it is readily available if at some time it is required. At present the records are one copy only in either registers or card systems with the inevitable risk of destruction.

. .. /2

2 •

Furthermore, there are rarely measurements or comments on the potential of the site.

2.2 For each plot to nominate the grid reference so the plot can be relocated by stumps if necessary many years after it is removed.

2.3 To assess the condition of the plots.

2.4 On the basis of available facts and observations to reach some conclusions regarding the suitability of species to locations.

2.5 To recommend future action.

3. SURVEY METHOD

3.1 It was essentially a rapid field survey by the writer. Lack of time prevented anything better. However, with one observer it has the advantage that the subjective element has been reduced.

3.2 Where they existed (generally the case) establishment details are taken from the records.

3.3 Current stocking if not recorded is the writer's estimate.

3.4 Codominant height was measured by either 'staff hypsometer' or Hagameter.

3.5 To give a relative measure of height growth, '5 year height growth' is used, i.e. Total height x 5.

age The '5 year height intercept ' method would have been more accurate but as that is not possible with P. radiata, this measure was used. In most cases the plots are past the years of most vigorous height growth. Thus, '5 year height growth' would generally be less than '5 year height intercept'. This needs to be taken into account when considering potential of the site.

3.6 Soils have sometimes been described in the records and in the case of Mundaring some soil pits were dug and profiles described. Surface soils have been described either by the writer or from records if available.

3.7 Commercial Status

Utilisable volumes of chip, case and mill timber were estimated as a guide for future utilisation. These represent volume available if clear felled with 2 exceptions.

Total volume. 4847 m3 chip 5763 m3 case 13-20 cm 2373 m3 mill 20 cm +

Such volumes in toto are not insignificant as a resource.

4. SITE POTENTIAL

In none of the records is there any evidence of recultivation or scrub control and it must be assumed that none was undertaken. Many pinaster plots have 'Silviculture 70' treatment of cleaning from original stocking to 750/ha at approximately 8-11 years. P. pinaster regrowth from this has never been removed and we know this can reduce increment by about 17% on coastal sands. Fertiliser was normal at planting but rarely used later. This general lack of growth promotion is not normal for a plantation and therefore plots as seen now indicate something rather lower than their true potential.

Factors described including 5 year height growth, colour and needle length have been taken into consideration when describing site potential.

5. DESCRIPTION OF GROUND FUEL

This does not appear in this booklet but it was done in each case and passed to Divisions to provide a basis for a winter burning programme.

6. PLOT NUMBERS & LOCATION

Various methods have been used in the Divisions to name and number the plots. Sometimes the plot number in a register differs from that on current 1:50,000 plans. In such cases the latter is used in the Index. Most plots are shown on such plans. To avoid confusion each plot has been given a six figure grid reference. For ease of reference to the plans at the back of this booklet each plot has been serially numbered. This is the 'Index Plan Nu~ber'.

7. CONCLUSIONS

7.1 P. pinaster

If 14ft (4.27 m) is acceptable 5 year height intercept on the Swan Coastal Plain, considering the advanced age of some plots, the same figure for '5 year height growth' should give a reasonable guide to acceptability in "Hills".

Distance from market would require consideration.

The number and distribution of soil pits is insufficient to enable confident conclusions to be reached regarding soil depth required. The indications, however, are that at least 75 cm depth is required.

Lack of soil depth information often clouds conclusions regarding lack of health but reasonable assumptions can generally be made. P. pinaster is healthiest on the better soils on sites where water is readily available. However, it has shown that it can grow satisfactorily on all soils. It can tolerate a reasonable laterite influence but health deteriorates with an increasing proportion of gravel. Nowhere is it acceptable on pure Wandoo sites, presumably

... I 4

4.

due to shallow clay. Reduced rainfall, progressing eastwards shows its influence but is not a limiting factor in the area concerned.

7.2 P. radiata

Many plots are over 20 years and with lack of subsequent fertiliser, a decline in height growth can be expected. However, for those under 20 years the 5 year height growth ranged between 20ft (6.1 m) and 30ft (9.15 m) for stands of acceptable to good health.

Soil depth - the same comments apply as with pinaster.

Soil type - with the exception of Qualen Road plot on yellow sand, the only acceptable stands are growing on sandy loams. Health decreases progressively with increasing lateritic influence.

In deciding whether or not radiata can be grown satisfactorily on a site, the dominant factor to consider should be whether it can be grown without serious sun scald. On a number of sites, although height growth is reasonable, the incidence of sun scald (a serious defect) is so high that they must be classed unacceptable. Obviously sun scald is associated with lack of health and this must be due primarily to lack of nutrients. This can possibly be corrected with fertiliser but at this stage of our knowledge the likely cost is frightening. Bear in mind we are discussing sites in the decreasing rainfall east of the Darling Scarp. The fact that rainfall is not the dominant factor influencing health is demonstrated by healthy pines at Cliffords Plantation with rainfall 550 mm.

Cliffords Plantation is of low quality, primarily due to poor stocking caused by early flooding. However, although variable in health probably due to shallow clay on a Wandoo site, there are quite acceptable stands free of serious sunscald.

7.3 General Conclusion

At some time in the future, consideration might be given, either in State Forest or private property, to establishing plantations east of the most fertile soils in the river valleys on the edge of the Darling Scarp. If this occurs in State Forest, a great deal of work would be required to ascertain the extent of sites proven to be satisfactory. This comment applies mainly to P. radiata.

All the satisfactory P. radiata plots are on soils close to water courses or on yellow sand.

The former are generally so narrow that current management practice could not accept them. The yellow sand type is marginally acceptable and confidence in soil depth would be required. The need for refertilising would also have to be accepted.

8. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE ACTION

8.1 As mentioned in the introduction, isolated pine plots are a protection problem which can be costly. It needs to be recognised that their potential having been assessed, their prime value has been realised.

8.2 No further silvicultural treatment is warranted except Yarrigal Form and Qualen Road Plots.

The latter is 8ha and fertiliser at regular intervals should produce a good stand. Certainly high pruning of any P. radiata should not be attempted.

It has done more harm than good by exposing the stem with resultant sun scald.

8.3 Plots generally would benefit from thinning - most for commercial sizes. However, with a few exceptions where this is noted, this would be uneconomic and only prolong the nuisance which the plots constitute.

8.4 A programme of winter burning at minimum cost has already commenced.

8.5 Utilisation is a problem. There are plantations in four Divisions with much higher priority for thinning and these will produce the full range of marketable products. Due to their small area, scattered and/or remote location, the large forwarders used by contractors will rarely be suitable for the job. On public roads they need to be transported and this is costly.

The best we can do is clear fell with few exceptions at an age and time when we can get maximum utilisation or value return. This means adopting an opportunist attitude. Examples -

(a) There are operations in the locality.

(b) Our contractor in plantations is unable to cope with demand. Use another contractor with suitable mobile equipment.

(c) Sell to mills in the locality.

8.6 When plots have been clear felled they should be replaced with hardwood species suited to the particular sites and protected until they can withstand fire.

Area: 0.2 ha now

Stocking: Unthinned, approx. 1500/ha.

Codom height: 12m. 5 year height growth 3.lm (10.3 ft)

Silviculture: Fair health but poor form and height growth

due to wet site and clay. No fertiliser at planting but 0.2T/ha

super in 1966.

Soil: Described previously as white sand over gravel and clay

at shallow depth.

Commercial status: Some trees of case log size but the small

volume is too remote to harvest.

Site Potential: Site must be regarded as unsatisfactory.

It would have been better if mound plowed and maintained free

from scrub competition. Special efforts should not be made to

protect the plot.

Age: P73 (10 years)

Codom height: 9m. 5 year height growth 4.Sm (14.8 ft)

Silviculture: 120gm super A at planting. 120gm fertiliser

(type not stated) 1976. Healthy over whole plot but sample

counts show 60% of trees with sun scald almost invariably in

the pruned zone. No high pruning should be done and is not

warranted.

Soil: White sand with patches of yellow.

Commercial status: Any thinning not possible at present.

It should be delayed as long as possible to reduce further sun

scald. 20m3/ha chip.

Site potential: Although heavy fertiliser treatment with super

and zinc could reduce sun scald on this site, the cost for the

low growth rate is not warranted. Site unsuitable for radiata.

Codom height: 8.2m on gravel - 10m - 16m on best site.

5 year height growth 8.9m (29 ft) on best site.

Silviculture: 120gm/tree super mix A at planting. 1981

refertilised presumably with super at 0.4T/ha. 250/ha high pruned

overall and on approximately 2ha 750 done. Some sun scald on W

& N sides of plot. Inside approximately 5% scalded on pruned

zone. On best section scald is negligible. All trees are low

pruned. Form and health good but should continue to fertilise

to test if this will prevent further sun scald.

Soil: grey-white sand overlying yellow in SW corner. NE

corner heavy gravel.

Commercial status: Some trees have reached case size. Total

volume of chip 60m3/ha.

Site potential: Away from gravel potential is very satisfactory

but obviously a fertiliser regime at least as heavy as that used

here would be required. Low pruning should be deferred till

canopy closed and high pruning preferably not done. This is one

plot worth retaining to increase its value.

60% of stems have sun scald.

Soil: white sand with pockets of yellow.

Commercial status: Defer operations until sizes in demand are
